Zubz Apologises
« on: May 04, 2008, 02:00:24 PM »
Itumeleng Motuba

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rapper Zubz has publicly apologised for causing offence with his racist lyrics, but he doesn’t regret writing the song, which was labelled “hate speech”.

“Understand I’m gonna get this panga to your neck / Take what is mine today and I’ll rob you tomorrow / Take my time it’s payback / Tell my people [to] fight / And tell the oppressor get out,” he raps on his video, which was flighted by the SABC.

His apology follows a Broadcasting Complaints Commission ban on the song and his music video.

The ruling came after the Freedom Front Plus laid a complaint with the BCCSA.

The party claimed that the Zimbabwean-born rapper’s song amounted to hate speech.

The BCCSA said this week that the song threatens violence, and advised that it be banned from being broadcast on radio or television.

In response, Zubz said: “I want to apologise to everyone who was offended by the song. I did not in any way mean to hurt anybody. I don’t regret making the song though, and I know which message I wanted to spread. Our nation is so culturally sensitive and that has taught me to be sensitive.”

Pieter Mulder of the Freedom Front Plus was happy with the outcome: “This is reverse racism and there is no doubt in my mind about that. I am happy that this kind of hate speech can be taken off our televisions.”

The BCCSA tribunal judgment stated: “Its dominant effect is that of militancy and violent threats.”

While the song can now no longer be broadcast, the commercial distribution of the DVD, or other recordings of the song, are not limited by the order

And it's lost on everyone that Pieter Mulder still sees himself and his people as oppressors...

This sets a bad precedent, who ever was defending Zubs, and Zubs as well, did a very very bad job at this.
I'll try an expand later when I have time...

Y did he apologise, he shud have known from the start that such a video wud be controversial. Him apologising kind of makes the track meaningless, its like by so doing (apologising) he ain't sticking to what he believes in. Nice jam though.

maybe he apologised because his lawyer told him it was the right thing to do (from a legal point of view)?

isn't there something in the constitution about hate speech? I don't know what happens if you are found guilt of committing 'hate speech', but maybe that's what he was worried about?

Like with all legal stuff, there's always grey areas, and even more so when the creative arts are concerned. 'Freedom of expression' is not unlimited and context is always important.

Taken out of context (and literally), Zubz's lyrics could sound as if he is promoting violence. Knowing Zubz, I don't believe that he is encouraging racial violence, but to some 40 year old white politician who isn't looking at the deeper meaning or message, you can see how the lyrics could be taken literally.

Do we really want total, unrestrained freedom of speech? Would you invoke freedom of speech if some far right-wing neo-nazi rapper made a song encouraging white people to attack black people? I'm not putting Zubz in that category, just taking the idea of free speech to its logical extreme.

I agree with Capt Schti that Zubz and his legal team don't seem to have done a very good job at defending his position.

Exactly, the least he should have done is stay away from it, and make the label issue a statement.
Bullshit fucking apology.

This statement is harmful to audiences who are open and expect honest, no matter how disagreable or agreable, debates around religion, sex, politics and race from artist and most important to artist who have something valuable to explore even if it's not popular.

This is the reason why they will shut the Scorpions down and we just watch "Generations".

For such an explosive country we do have some of the worst "artists" (music, film, TV alless) polluting our brains. Fucking useless.
All they want is to be on Selimathunzi and then release a kwaito album or become part of soapie opera set furniture and then release a kwaito album...

Yet again the country is held to ransom by some fuckers who believe that apartheid was good for black people and the idiots that use the same tool, the bible, that used to hate them (swart mense) to hate on gays.

Thank you, Zub.

WTF?!?!?! ROFLMAO!!!

He got hit for that?

Awww damn, they really got us fucked up. Political correctness is a disease that has eaten up almost all common sense in the modern world and (as an unexpected((Psych)) bonus for the rothschild overlords) homogenized SABC in the process it seems. Fuckin 'ey, talk about utterly ridiculous.....

isn't there something in the constitution about hate speech? .

yeah man, on sec. 36 of the bill of writes which is embedded within the CON-stitution there are limitations on the writes which the bill of writes its self grants to the individual! writes like freedom of speech, which is limited to the extent that your speech should not offfend anyone at anytime anywhere in S.A.

I dont see how Zubz was being offensive, he was actually addressing the 'oppressor', who the fuck labels them selves as 'oppressors'? if ant one should be apologising it should be that FFP dude for being a 'oppressor' clearly
