Title: Selwyn interview
Post by: A pimp named Sarkozy on December 16, 2006, 01:08:20 PM
VL: Its been a while you back with a new album whats the name of the project and who did you work with?

SELWYN: The name of the album is Zone 5, I worked with Omen,Amu,Beatmaker, Dome and Semitone.

VL: If I gave you the opportunity to go back to the days of recording the Formula your previous album what would you have not done?

SELWYN: I wouldn’t of changed anything on that album cause I think it was moving away from the typical way of making an album.I was taking a soulful and mature approach and I wouldn’t change anything in it.

VL: Is TownshipFrequency still family apparently you guys aren’t as tight as you were?

SELWYN: We still family and that’s it.

VL: If you guys are still cool can we ever expect a Township Frequency video?

SELWYN: Everybody is focusing on their solo projects cause we tryiong to build our brands as solos so when everybody is ready we could do one.

VL: I was listening to the Wikid’s “The Man” the other day did you expect that sort of backfire when you were in the studio?

SELWYN: Yeah we did we knew we’d have to apologise somewhere along the line but everyone is cool now.

VL: You have regrets?

SELWYN: No, something good has come out of it we like friend with some of the guys and we achieved what we wanted but if we still had beef with some of the guys I’d have regrets

VL: Your beef is settled with the Kwaito fraternity?

SELWYN: Yeah man

VL: I’ve heard about the three kings concept what is that?

SELWYN: Its designed to put Gallo hip hop on the map with me Pro kid, and Proverb. . The proverb speciality is more your punchline rapid fire and very urban, Pro Kid specializes in the Kasie rap vibe and I’m more storytelling.

VL: If Selwyn was a product well in a record store how do explain to the consumer what they should expect?

SELWYN: They should expect creative storyuelling no compromising my style of rap, I still have that souldful mature sound and my topics are real everything is a true story, the lyrics will speak to your soul

VL: Selwyn’s performance is a dvd how do you sell your show?

SELWYN: The show will have a theme on stage derived on how everything happens , there’s a Panyaza story which will be the nucleus of the whole performance and high energy levels it will be based on a movie the songs will put you in a certain mood

VL: • I haven’t heard the new album yet but you highlight a lot of kasie life hardcore is Selwyn really that does voice what he sees around his environement or Selwyn got scars?

SELWYN: You always a product of your environment and I’m pro kasie rap.

VL: • You were an intergral part of the Le Club era what do you missed most about the J section era that you think could make local hip hop today better and bigger.?

SELWYN: You’ll have Amu doing histhing and everyone will bethere to see him and everybody had their fans supporting them today you need a line up to have a show I miss that individualism.

VL: Have you got a part on the Hip Hopera the stage show about Le Club written by Bionic?

SELWYN: No.

VL: So we getting another SAMA next year?

SELWYN: Hell Yeah!

VL: You want to vent out about anything?

SELWYN: Rappers are too divided and we need to do things at the same time and the same pace so promoters can also know these are standards requirements for the hip hop community we still not doing tours together I got beef with that we really need to congregate as a movement

i cant relate much to joburg kasi life, but its always fascinating to hear about different hoods. i was born in soweto but spent my life in the eastern cape so hood life is definitely somrthin i know about, but i dont think hiphop needs to go in the kwaito theme of glorifying kasi and glamorising that aspect of SA life! hiphop is for the streets, not only kasi streets, but city streets, suburb streets, dusty streets, coastal streets!

so selwyn sayin that he's pro kasi is to me, saying that he's now doing kwaito/hiphop. and he confirms this by saying he dont have beef with kwaito no more!

in conclusion, i love hiphop, and i love kwaito! id rather buy Kabelo or Bricks than Selwyn's album! cos they do better kwaito/hiphop albums than he does! he sounds like he's trying too hard!!! and about that SAMA award, i dont think so! hahahaha, that shit is mine!!!!!!!

good luck tho! i hope he does some decent numbers this time cos after getting bitchslapped by mandoza he kinda went wood instead of gold. oops!

i really think prokid is definitely hiphop with his first album!!! he represented kasi but kept the hiphop sound and feel! he didnt try to sound kwaito!

but with selwyn, thats what i picked up in the formula!!!!he went a bit kwaito!

its my opinion! and u cats who liked the Formula. tell me if ur honestly feelin the new album?

ha ha ha ha ha...........that album was, is and will always be wack.......they say u r who u hang around with, well u r what u listen to too....Selwyn is wack straight up, a wack rapper, with a wack persona, uninspiring character, and a straight up fag.....i aint feelin him and never
will.....im keepin my eye on Morale, he got potential but will he live
up to the industrys standards in order for him to shine and i mean shine...we'll have to see.......it takes character, vision, talent, skill, charisma, etc.........Selwyn aint got non of those qualities as a normal cat on the street and definately not as an entertainer.

I have never felt Selwyn. But I've heard a few good joints from him. That Undeground vs commercial battle with PRO on Formula, the joint with MXO, People & I dont think shake is bad party joint either. Overall, I thought formula was an average album. U cant write it off as wack / Kwaito, but not brilliant either. Which is why I think he did not deserve that SAMA award. There were more deserving peeps.

On Zone 5, I'm feeling Cant Touch feat PRO. Omen murdered the beat once again.

thats the whole problem, these wack cats r hiding behind dope beats....cause i really dont except mediocre rappers........ie: a dope rapper is someone with pa**ion, conviction, vision and a leader. I dont
see any of those qualities in Selwyn, maybe he does have them, but it doesnt help if he cant communicate his pa**ions and all his qualities to
the people u r trying to inspire. I have tried to track his record and give
chance after chance for him to convince me as a consumer to by his
record but he has failed time and again, and u know what.....thats
he aint selling period!!!

anyone who respects this cat must be cut from the same cloth or kissin a** to get to amu! when u say he got a few tight tracks on his album, im sure yall mean to say "tight beats"!!! period!!!!

Personally i think hip-hop fans are too opinionated. And you know what they say about opinions.

What i look for in an MC, might not be the same as what someone else is checking for. Selwyn's been an MC for a long-a** time, probably longer than most of ya'll cats been breathing. He actually started this whole venac rap shyt together with Shimane but he's never credited for it. Dude was featured on a POC track for f***s sake.

I used to see him in Carlton Center around 89-90, with f***en EPMD LP's and shyt. Most cats probably don't even know what "Strictly Business" is.

Anyway my point is he's been down for a long time. That doesn't neccessarily mean he's dope, but to me it means he knows that real shyt better than most of ya'll will ever do. He just made his choice to do the kind of music he's doing.

I bet most cats didn't even listen to the Formula and ya'll are just bashing it cos of Shake,Shake.

Like i said before, TOO EACH HIS OWN. REAL NIGGAS KNOW THE TRUTH.

hip hop cats is opinionated, please man we all opinionated......bcos we all
different it has nothing to do with hip hop, him being in the game for such a long time and be still hustling meand that every time he raps about getting out of poverty and living his dreams, he his actually telling us about his fantasies bcos his still hustling.........lead by example, just bcos u been in the game a long time dont mean ur real........u might just be a fan in the mix......i respect real hustlers who accomplish things and live their dreams.....not these small time hustlers who aint got what it takes to rise to the top!!!

and yes! its cool to have 16yr olds buying your records! u say it like its a bad thing! thats backwards thinking! i wana have all types of people buying my shit! especially the 15-19 and 20-30yr old markets, its smart business! maximum sentence is old, i repeat,ur only as good as ur last hit! being a dope mc aint just about recognition from other heads, its about recognition from everyone!!!!! it seems like in SA weve been brainwashed to believe that we gotta be broke, grimy, underground forever to be considered a dope mc! theres no aspiration!

im not trying to go over anyones heads or anything, but heres a new concept! TO ALL DOPE MC'S - lets use our talents to make MONEY and be able to buy expensive cars and feed our family's for the next 200yrs! rather than reminisce about the tight freestyles we did back in the day and talk about how real we are cos we been in the game forever!!!

Ok so basically your saying since KRS-ONE has not had a hit in like 10 years he aint a dope MC ?????

What about SCARFACE ?
MOBB DEEP ?
TRIBE CALLED QUEST ?
DMX ?
OUTKAST ?

All these people that have been so consistent in the game , Are they now suddenly WACK just cos they not on the charts anymore ?

It's cool if you want the 15-year old girls to buy your shyt dog, GOOD GOING THERE BUDDY ! Just make sure your teaching them the right things.

But me personally, my shyt aint really meant for them. It's Grimey, It's HardCore ! It's not meant for their pretty little ears !
I prefer to let them enjoy they sweet little lives, listen to Britney Spears and go shopping every Sartuday for Lip-Gloss and Mario Posters.

God knows there's enough trouble and mysery that lies ahead for them, so i let them enjoy childhood while they can. They can bump my shit when they all grown up.

My nigga Reason da Ma** is actually doing a good job holding it down  "FOR THE KIDS".I'm on my GROWN FOLK SHYT !

Ya'll going on and on about Huslting ?  What or Who the f*** have ya'll HUSLTED in this Game ? HUH ?

Niggas listen to too much Jigga and get gased up thinkin shyt is sweet and they gonna be taking over and shyt !

In the Immortal Words of One :

"THERE'S A MILLION MC'S IN THE WORLD TONIGHT !"

Everybody talking about how they the TRUTH, they taking over, yadayada.

Stop talking about Niggas aint ready ! We been ready dog.

Lets See

1. Get your first project to have more than 300 000 downloads on the net without even being known !

2. Get your tracks to be played on radio without somebody you know being friends with the DJ, The Station manager ,etc, etc.

3. Get Radio Interviews, Magazines Interviews, Newspapers Reviews, Web-site Reviews.

4. Get consistent GIGS !

5. Get Respected Players in this GAME wanting you on their projects, and them wanting to be on your project.

DO ALL OF THAT BEFORE YA'LL TALK TO ME ABOUT HUSTLING !!!!!

NOW IM REALLY f***EN DONE !!!

quote="MrC"]You gotta be kidding me right ! Me ? An AMU beat ? Clearly you have no f***in clue who you're talking to youngin.

What does success have to do with being a dope MC ?. Does it mean they WACK just cos 16 year old girls who watch MTVBase, BET and Channel O don't buy their shyt ? Please nigga. We are talking about skills here. U ever heard Selwyn freestyle ? U ever heard his track on Maximum Sentence ? Like i said, he chose his route to do the kind of music he does, but REAL NIGGAS KNOW, COS WE BEEN THERE !!!! Where the f*** where ya'll when dude was ripping Le Club. Based on that and the fact that i like most of the Formula makes him dope to me.

Ohh and being REAL has nothing to do with being a HUSTLER. Talk is cheap. Let's c ya'll cats in a year.

Nigga please......TALKING 'BOUT being REAL has nothing to do with being a hustler....clearly u have no clue what u talking 'bout, it dont matter what u did, and yes if u make tracks for the ma** public and try to sell millions of records and fail at that than u r wack.......bcos ur best ideas dont matter if they dont materialise into something you intended to accomplish, even worst when u fail time and time again!!! Nigga got no flow no charisma no fight in him to make real changes and pave the way for up and coming artists...if he was tyte then and i knew him then and respected him, i definately wouldnt now.....cos right now he is straight up wack!!! So what if he can freestyle or what track he was featured on....

Be sure to check us out and wacth this space and ul surely get inspired, small time hustlers!!!

NOW IM DONE ![/quote]

"Hip Hop"

You say one for the trebble, two for the time
Come on y'all let's rock this!
You say one for the trebble, two for the time
Come on!

Speech is my hammer, bang the world into shape
Now let it fall... (Hungh!!)
My restlessness is my nemesis
It's hard to really chill and sit still
Committed to page, I write rhymes
Sometimes won't finish for days
Scrutinize my literature, from the large to the miniature
I mathematically add-minister
Subtract the wack
Selector, wheel it back, I'm feeling that
(Ha ha ha) From the core to the perimeter black,
You know the motto
Stay fluid even in staccato
(Mos Def) Full blooded, full throttle
Breathe deep inside the trunk hollow
There's the hum, young man where you from
Brooklyn number one
Native son, speaking in the native tongue
I got my eyes on tomorrow (there it is)
While you still try to follow where it is
I'm on the Ave where it lives and dies
Violently, silently
Shine so vibrantly that eyes squint to catch a glimpse
Embrace the ba** with my dark ink fingertips
Used to speak the king's English
But caught a rash on my lips
So now my chat just like dis
Long range from the base-line (switch)
Move like an apparition
Float to the ground with ammuntion (chi-chi-chi-POW)
Move from the gate, voice cued on your tape
Putting food on your plate
Many crews can relate
Who choosing your fate (yo)
We went from picking cotton
To chain gang line chopping
To Be-Bopping
To Hip-Hopping
Blues people got the blue chip stock option
Invisible man, got the whole world watching
(where ya at) I'm high, low, east, west,
All over your map
I'm getting big props, with this thing called hip hop
Where you can either get paid or get shot
When your product in stock
The fair-weather friends flock
When your chart position drop
Then the phone calls....
Chill for a minute
Let's see whoelse tops
Snatch your shelf spot
Don't gas yourself ock
The industry just a better built cell block
A long way from the shell tops
And the bells that L rocked (rock, rock, rock, rock...)

[scratching]

Hip Hop is prosecution evidence
The out of court settlement
Ad space for liquor
Sick without benefits (hungh!)
Luxury tenements choking the skyline
It's low life getting tree-top high
Here there's a back water remedy
Bitter intent to memory
A cla** E felony
Facing the death penalty (hungh!)
Stimulant and sedative, original repetitive
Violently competitive, a school unacredited
The break beats you get broken with
on time and inappropriate
Hip Hop went from selling crack to smoking it
Medicine for loneliness
Remind me of Thelonius and Dizzy
Propers to B-Boys getting busy
The war-time snap shot
The working man's jack-pot
A two dollar snack box
Sold beneath the crack spot
Olympic spnosor of the black glock
Gold medalist in the back shot
From the sovereign state of the have-nots
Where farmers have trouble with cash crops (woooo)
It's all city like phase two
Hip Hop will simply amaze you
Craze you, pay you
Do whatever you say do
But black, it can't save you

I think it's cool that these young bloods have the energy and enthusiasm to dream and talk big. That's the nature of the game,,, new blood is always required.

However, you should respect the pioneers even if you don't feel the music they made. You should understand their struggle so that you can learn from their experiences.

Trash talking your way into an industry rarely works unless what you've got is so unique and so compelling that everyone just has to pay attention. More commonly you just end up alienating people who you may well need help from at some point in your career.

Respect goes a long way.

Quote from: "Sduhla"
Morale can definately write, but there is just NO conviction in ur voice, thus ur shit sounds weak. BRICKS u should be ashamed of urself for mentionin that quasi bohamian in the same breath wit the realest cat in SA hip hop, Maradona.Who the f*** cares of how long Selwynn been rappin.Dude is still garbage. And the fact that he featured on POC, who by the way were not briliant neither means f*** ALL! iF IT MEANS SUMTHIN then Puffy/Diddy IS ONE OF THE DOPEST MCS CAUSE HE WAS FEATURED ON KRS' ALBUM IN 97.
I do think that Cash and Zooloo NEED to grow the f*** up, cause they still caught in the era where a rapper is only dope if he rhymes in English. Dplanet ur views seldom suprise me, u a real white booi! And MrC wut does Selwyn carryin EPMD EL have to do wit anythin. We could go to the real history of hip hop, and I know I'll find u wantin.
I was in Le Club when Tumi was still a member of the crew Database. Snaz, Maradona, Tumi, Amu and Krooked were the hottest cats then. Selwyn was always an 'intertainer' thats if u find stupidity inertainin. SA hip hop didn't start in Le Club, so stop frontin.

Who said anything about SA Hip-hop starting out in Le Club ?

I made mention of it cos to me and hundreds of other kids who where there every Saturday, that was SA hip-hop at it's most purest. There has never been an era like that in SA hip-hop history and i highly doubt there ever will be.

Selwyn carrying an EPMD LP in 89' has everything to do with the point that i was making. Back then there was little to no hip-hop community where i come from, therefore it was dope to me to see cats carrying and exchanging stacks of vynils through a busy mall in central joburg, when this whole f***en industry didnt even recognize us. Therefore him doing that when Look n Listen in Hillbrow didn't even have a large hiphop collection, tells me he has always had the pa**ion for this music just like these cats nowadays claim to have. Now they real hip-hop and Selwyn is not ! Please man. Most of these cats that ya'll hate have been where ya'll are at as well. People think just cos they chose to do the kind of music they do, then the've never been exposed to the ARTEFACTS and ORGAZINED KONFUSION's of this world. I don't agree with most of the stuff they do, but i don't consider them WACK because i know their history
and know what they are capable of doing and to an extent understand why they do what they are currently on.

Also the fact that he was on a POC cut (who to me are brilliant by the way), shows that people recognized and gave him a shot. Out of all the rappers that were doing it then they chose him. For me that's a big thing cos i looked up to POC then and still do.

To be honest with you Sduhla, i never find anything constructive in most of your posts. Your always putting people down for no freaking reasons just cos they don't meet your or so high-and-mighty-standards.You never break down what it is they are doing wrong and what they should be doing to make it better. You just find fault in everybody out there trying to do something for themselves. I never heard you say anything good about anybody, except of course for 3WR, who deserve all the praise of the entire south african media and all it's stupid ma**es out there who don't know anything about anything. (AND I LUVVV 3WR).

You need to come down to earth brah, cos I for one can't hear you from WAY ABOVE THERE !

My 2 cents about this whole Selwyn thing, anytime a head (who's male (no homo) ) can just walk up to you to tell your isht is dope (if he thinks it's dope)...Then that dude is cool with me. Too many niccas be thinkin "F everyone else I'm the beginning and the end of this thing."

The truth offten hurts...but at times it must be said and I think this warning MUST be headed, the Ameican dream of making big in hip hop really fools cats. We all had dreams of being rap Gods but reality soon struck at the time the market was not ready for hip hop and I am talking international now imagine the chances of local acts succeding. This is why you saw heads thinking out the Box collabing or switching they style

TKZ abandoned they short lived one hip hop album career for "kwaito" smartest move they could ever do they actually build a South African urban sound by diluting recycling "hip hop" and providing for a market

Loco and Ode Mearster did really workout but I bet he got paid more than he got paid for his apperance in The Motherload

Tumi can't be held dude is incredible ..but truth be told its his band that got him the recognition with out the volume we would be singing a different tune about Tumi / Database

Amu only survived this long coz he was producing Gospel, Kwaito and other music Genre, Selwyn was employed Full time before quiting to do formula..

PLENTY other heads are roaming the co-opreate worl right even me ..check out my hustle www.herdit.co.za

I know of cats right now who held onto the dream of making it big in hip hop and those cats is just bums!

Carefull about aspirations of being stars

lol listen to yourself, I never wanted to pursue music as a career, I just know alot of friends that did. I have a degree and make a living of what I like I.T. , Album sales in the US have fallen hard, especially hip hop, ppl with big budgets like dmx, pharell, mobb deep didnt even go gold. And another thing is ppl in SA are not ready to buy music of the internet ( i read somewhere you guys wanted to sell your stuff via the web) as our current broadband situation needs to get fixed first. My personal advice is do music on the side, even the biggest hip hop goup in our country skwatta kamp aren't making alot of money and some of them work full time, and I doubt you'll be as big as them

Directed at Bondizzo!!

^^^^ wise words bra...I do however think that "some" money can be milked from the SA hip hop industry there is a generation of kids that comsume anything that they are fed there is ALWAYS markets like where generic bubble gum shit has a market its there but its tricky to get..I however belive a Mo can appeal to said group...there is no room for mainstream Local hip hop your shit has to emulation of a popular American group.

The proof is in the puding the ONLY local rappers besides Pro-Verb to make any impact were in the "Hip Hop" field have all been contravesial..HHP, Selwyn, ProKid skwatta and this is 12years after "big hip hop acts dropped" POC  Motherload, Spex Amu...ctast is ma dellusional!

as much as it hurts to admit the market is geared towrds a Morale as opposed to Selwyn sukses

We'll see time always tells

cool man we on the same page, what I was just trying to say is that dont let it be your only focus, yeah lots of my friends pursed the career and failed and are now jobless and doing stuff like working at tills and decided to drop out of university cause ppl like 50 dropped out of school. I'm just glad you making sense of the whole situation but I still don't think hip hop is the key in this country, look at teargas, they made it big in SA but I can ensure you I still make way more than what they make just off education. Take education first then do the rest as hobbies and if your hobbies start making money enjoy that too, our economy isn't that great to support musical acts

to those commenting about my age, im 24, have a single parent who is currently unemployed and two siblings who i spoil rotten. i came to jozi last year on a greyhound bus and a rhyme book, now i take flights to cape town to shoot hiphop videos! i got a car, i pay my own rent in a cool pad in randburg with my own recording studio i just set up, and yes, i got other income to fall back on, am a co-owner of a record label and an up and coming clothing label and personally gross R100 000 a yr.so dont worry about me, but thanks for caring!haha

Just a question:  is all you do Hip Hop?

First up I wana say so what the f*** if i’m from Randburg, do I gotta be from Alex or Soweto to sound grimy. And I rock them NY caps,(Maggz is from Soweto but he looks and sounds New York, and he chills in Rosebank a lot.) SO WHAT THE f***. Man I love HIP HOP, from the rugged Boom bap Landmynz, all the way to the crunked out Jozi.
I’m 18 so you don’t expect me to listen to EPMD, although I love that joint” The symphony” I might be 18, and I might dress like I live in ATL and shit, but trust me I know what real hip hop is, and thank God for knew blood like Saigon, Papoose, True life and shit. These niggaz are my Kool G Rap’s and Big Dady Kane’s and shit.
Oh and Cash love that joint that was on Metro, that 1 with the line sum like “Ask Waxxy what’s the 411” or sum like that 2 dope.
Shit and I love that new landmynz
“ I be the MRC the rap God almighty representing Landmynz on the MIC”, can’t wai 4 volume 2, especially it comes with a free backpack.
My point is God made us all different.
Man f*** what people say Randburg is da Place 2 be.
Anyway back to the topic I think Selwyn is wasting his talent doin what his doin dude can actually be dope, like that track on Metro is pretty dope.
1 more thing people musn’t confuse experience with talent, just becoz Selwyn was around when I was still rockin diapers don’t make him dope
Ya dig

@ Cash I am impressed that you make that much money from music + other things. I am (like Syn) impressed that you can afford to live on that & still provide for your family. Get yours player! I would live to hear a CASH track. Please upload.

P.S. I used to rock fitted's & oversize HUGE FONT tees too so I can sort of relate though thats not all it takes to make you hip hop nahmean?!

u still trapped in the rat race, and there is no happy poor man....its not

Luckily I grew up before those huge badly graffed font tees were in. I meant the big Karl Kani/ Pelle Pelle t-shirts dun! Supposedly that authenticated my Hip Hopness back then before it was cool to do so.

Question @ CASH & ZOO: Does American Hip Hop (crunk/ snap/ g-funk/ boom bap etc) made in SA constitute SA Hip Hop?
Title: Selwyn interview
Post by: zoolooo1 on January 26, 2007, 11:29:27 AM
yeah it does......for me its more about the artist than the music, cos no matter what kind of music u do its gotta be hot. For me rappers have to be more than rappers to gain my respect. Once that has been established i really would not care what kind of music u do bcos il be into the
artist...(but ur shit has to be hot). But i do feel that we need to be innovative and develop our own sound if we have any dreams of making it
in the states and around the world.....i have found my sound that im
going to explore once i have more resources....but for now u make
the best with what u got and if u hot enuf people wont care what kind of music ur doing, cos u cant hate something thats hot! Period!

this is jus the tip of the iceberg! for real - we do it all man! the track youre feelin is more grimy, more street so u definitely gon feel it if u that type of head!

other cats hate that track and dig WHATS MY NAME cos thats the shit they relate to!

its all good! as long as we can touch all heads and casual heads who still listen to hiphop!

sweet sixteen was a commercial track and the teeny boppers loved it - hence the heavy rotation on channel o and the appearances on channel 0, a few nigerian tv shows, ktv, yo-tv, reverb ect. Edith Venter(top billing) they loved the track!!!

my thing is that, we need to capture the widest hiphop scope possible - underground, deep, conscious, street , commercial, club, crunk, casual !!! all that shit! but still keep it hiphop!!!!! sort of like the dmx's, 50's, fabolous's , jay-z's in the states! a lot of french artists also do a diverse blend of street, underground and commercial hiphop, and that makes the music more accessible to the general public so the movement is growing!

ima post more crack so keep ya eye on the forums!!!! ul find all those different flavours for sure!

CRACK MONOPOLY/DC
CONS!!! 2007!!!! we takin over!!!!!!!!
