Title: HYPE Feb/March issue
Post by: mizi. on February 06, 2007, 12:47:53 PM
The Feb/March HYPE issue is out. This is in my opinion the best HYPE issue ever. Here is the Editorial note (before I get shut down again)

I was hangin’ with my big cuz S.E.L.F the other day and I asked him this question: ‘Which direction is hip hop moving towards?’ ‘Hip hop is becoming regionalized,’ he replied. As he explained how artists would gain recognition and support in their home towns before being exposed to the rest of us, it became clear that this hip hop game is all about dominating a piece of the map, and letting the whole world know that.

As I gave it more thought, I realised that this was happening both locally and internationally, the most notable example being that of The Game, who has single handedly managed to restore hope for west coast hip hop and put LA back on the map (p.36). At the same time, Nas has managed to place himself at the forefront of New York hip hop as he carries out his plan to bring the ‘real’ hip hop back (p.34).

When looking at the hip hop game in SA, I see the exact same patterns. Local hip hop is divided into regions. The most powerful players in these regions are the ones with the potential to take over the industry. I decided to talk to headz from all over the country, asking them which hip hop artists best represented their region. When speaking to Cape Town headz, the one name that came up more than any other was that of Middle Finga, one of the founders of a rap sub-genre known as Spaza (p.30). As I moved on to the Eastern Cape, the name of a former Drakensburg Boys Choir member, Trusenz was the most prominent (p.31). Durban was united in its support for their local hip hop band, Big Idea (p.28), while PTA stood behind The Anvils all the way (p.26).

Joburg was a difficult one. With so many stars illuminating the golden city, it was difficult to see which one stood out, so we took this question across the border. Which rapper represents SA/Joburg hip hop in the eyes of headz in areas such as Canada and Belgium. The unanimous answer was Tumi from The Volume, who has managed to take the Joburg sound around the world (p.32). Last but not least, we have an area synonymous with its unique Motswako hip hop style. Who better to represent the North West than the one… the only… Morafe (p.29).

Lets take a closer look at these artists as we find out why they are the leaders of their regions. Kick back and enjoy the Territorial issue.

The HYPE Sessions is crezy. Mixed by DJ Redwood.

no offense to all those who exercise their right to choose and utilising their time doing other things, but i personally, not a friend of beer, would rather spend my last 19 bucks on 3 warm milk stouts than on a copy of hype magazine.

that's just me - i speak for me and nobody else. and it's a personal opinion really.

I always knew that there would be disageements on choosing Kings. I hear that Hype chose the Big Idea for KZN. Tight group, although relatively unknown compared to other groups in KZN. this will make some people unhappy, but I believe this is the Durban group likely to have a big impact nationally and even internationally. on the streets and ekasi, it's a different matter though. ibutho, Ewok, Nymphonics, GPM (damn, would be great if GPM took it, but they are not pure hip hop) would be favourites from DBN cats.

Cape Town - I'm surprised ben Sharpa or Writer's Block (including Konfab) did not make the cut. . EL Nino can you please upload your track (in a different thread perharps). A lot been said about your crew, but I have not heard much. perhaps that's why Middle is more well known. A lot of his tracks are in circulation.

I thought Middle was well-known in Cape Town as well. Doesn't he roll with MANICS? Rattex & all those cats. I thought that was a well-known crew in CT especially eKalthsa (Kayelitsha). I dont get it when you claim he is unknown. Not neccessarily the illest (some would say TOP is a better in his spaza raps, some prefer kritsi , guess it's a matter of opinion) , but many regard him as dope nonetheless.

Let me go to cop a copy.

come on cats... middle finga never claimed that he is the father of spaza.

the headline on his feature says he is "one of the fathers of spaza". don't let magazine talk get things twisted.

we all know that there are other representatives of spaza doing their thing. driemanskap gonna be in that magazine real soon, trust me!

right now it's middle finga's time to shine,,, he's reppin' spaza to the fullest and making moves. that doesn't mean he's better than the next man,,, just means he's doing the right things to get his career on track.

it's all love eKapa!

If you read again what Mizi says above. he wrote "one of the founders of spaza". I think that's where the confusions comes from and that Middle Finger calls himself the "King of Spaza"(check his myspace headline).

As for me I don't think I'm in a position to complain about him being the Cape representative on that article because I should have took time to contribute to the Regional King thread but i didnt.

However I would say that I wish it was somebody else. No beef. I'm down with the dude plus he has done much better than other CT cats in exposing himself in these cycles and for that reason only I "kind of" feel that he deserves to be the one in that article.

which brings me to this Merchant's question:

Quote

Yes a lot of people know him in the Cape but not as much as he is known here (AG) and plus he's not usually spoken about this side (CT) for reasons I'm not going to get into right now.

I must go get myself a copy soon. can anybody up the track list for the Hype compilation?

I really hope its a dope read like you say. The last issue I bought (Jay-z cover) was lightweight.  Some parts like the interview with the BBE founder were interesting but otherwise most of the articles were just pointless despite the agenda laid out in the editorial.

driemanskap have got MAD energy, and skills to go with it. recording with them is like stepping into a tornado.

Dla's verse is one of the most intense and technically proficient I have heard in a while. they all came off hardcore.

Planetary a**ault album just got even better!

I won't be leaking too much material from this project - y'all just have to look at the line-up and trust that you need start saving up to buy it when it comes out.

JahSeed (Bongo Maffin), Ben Sharpa (Kaptin), KONFAB, Terror MC, Jaak, TOP, Oracle Flo (Kuti Kult), aNon (Kuti Kult), Purple Simba (True Tiger, UK), Shyam (True Tiger, UK), Rato, Rattex (Maniac Squad), JP (Superdan), Trusenz, Hyphen (Archetypes), Otis Larynx (Archetypes), Driemanskap, Macho (Ill Literate Skills) & Sketch.

I'm aiming for April. I have one more track to record (Sketch) and most of the remaining tracks are mixed and mastered. I recorded 35 tracks so I've now got the difficult task of getting it down to 17.

It's gonna be a full PioneerUnit release with inner booklet, ill photography,, all shrink-wrapped to perfection. Trust me, you'll get your full value for money.

I'll post where it will be available nearer the time.

Anyway,,, I've taken this thread way off-track! :)

No comment about the rest of the quote but it was a funny moment in CNA lookin at which mag to cop...GAME on the HYPE, GAME on VIBE, GAME on THE SOURCE, I don't remember seeing a XXL, Diddy on SCRATCH...point is GAME's mug was everywhere (including some teeny bopper mags I can't recall). Did I miss somethin? Is GAME 'really' that hot at THIS moment in time, was'nt that album a while back now? Hey no hatin..just honest question.

haha! game tried his best to get the hype he needed to out do the documentary! he's a real determined dude! thats what i dig about him! he gotta be a bit smarter tho cos some of the things he said really affected his record sales and credibility!!! he's mostly defending his a** on most of the mags he on! other thatn that he kissin dre's a** and tryin to do damage control!!! he's definitely a hot rapper tho!!!!!

he jus need to be more thoughtful when he makes moves!
