On the streets theres alot of hating, for example alot of the heads from the hood would never cheer on a cat from a different hood or show love to a cat thes generally dope. If you cats remember when Y-fm had that thing at the bus station and Pro-kid won and got a deal! Alot of you forgot that He killed Adamus along the way! And alot of other cats. What Bout Reason have you heard him? Or even Golden Shovel? I personally think that Snazz has fallin off and Golden Shovel will Kill any mc, but the fact that He said I dont battle no more we start labeling mc's as weak. Zubz, Proverb, Reason, Anvils,Optical ill and alot of other cats still have that battle side, the difference is that at the end of the day you got to eat and make money!

You know, the way you singled me out like that seems like you were disrespecting me. Anways i'm not gonna dwell on that.
Here's the thing Cashless was an entity of emcees and producers who were all individuals trying to do their own thing, we decided to bond together to use this as a platform for all of us to elevate from. Cashless was formed in 1998, thats been almost 10 years now. Here's the thing we all grow and change and our goals also change. You ask yourself if you were in that same frame of mind 10 years ago and you will see what i mean. Along with all that we did have conflicts in the group, most the time i kept the group for splitting up untill it just got too much. Now there are other personal details i wont talk about that caused Cashless to deteriorate. in any case i'm cool with just about all the guys, i still work with Snazz and have recorded some new joints with him. Snazz is still the dope Emcee we all know.

Lets face the fact that mc's have there time on top and when they shine and are considered the dopest! Snazz is in the league of Mizchif, Spex, Naked Minds and other cats that was dope back in 2000. Todays line of mc's is too hot and we are business minded, take for example Optical ill, dope as f***ed but not really for you jiggy crowd, so they hook up with Levis, Do a tour around S.A and suddenly there sales pick up and they got endorced by Levis. My point is being dope dont mean shit if you cant use it to your advantage. ITs the same as having uranium but you dont know shit bout bombs! Rappers wanna trip about keepin it real and not selling out but dont ever make a living from what they trully love. In the states if 50 cents sings an RnB hook he is considered multitalentad, here if I do a track with Bricks I am labelled a sell out? 8O 8O Rappers need to wake up and realise that you have to broaden your music market.

I personally feel that an artist needs to have diversity if he is to survive! Making a club banger is a challenge to me! I have never written one! but i have take it upon myself to try it! not because im selling out but keepin it real is keeping it broke! I have spoke to cats that I have known for years and have been hustling as hard as I have and all say the same thing! there isnt a market for a canibus or nas! look at Tumi! he has a launch in CANDA before S.A! That aside, I mean, there are GOOD tracks and BAD tracks. A lot of it simply comes down to subjective interpretation. There are some outstanding club bangers and songs for the ladies, just as there are some f***ing awful 'underground' tracks.
Case in point: 'Let's Go' by Trick Daddy f/Lil Jon and Twista. Amazing, brilliant, knockout club heater.

He's been in the game for too long and is one of the cats that inspired me to pursue hiphop. In fact he's one of the nuts i busted out of to be where im at now.

IGHO mentioned that in Nigeria, a rapper like Ikechukwu charges the equivalent of $30K (dollars) for a show! and he charges $10K.(American Dollars, i re-iterate)
So YES! Nigerian Hiphop is lightyears ahead of SA hiphop!
The way they sell their albums/mixtapes in Nigeria is also very interesting- ie. The distributors all line up and offer to BUY a specified amount of units from you(say between100 000 - 8 million units depending on how hot u are there).They pay you in full up front(whoever offers the biggest cheque of course).
And thats IT! Then u start working on uir next project!
Example. P Square sold 8 million units upon their release. They got this money from 8 million units up front a week after they released the album.
They then immediately flew to the UK and SA to shoot music videos!
Next step is CRAZY marketing!
Then Crazy SHOWS!
Now thats power to the artists! SA artists aint got that!

In fact i think thats how it works with INTERNATIONAL ALBUMS getting manuf and distributed in SA.
Its also how the Nigerian Film industry works as far as DVD sales.
Of course it leaves room for shady distribution companies but i think the immediate payment idea is great.
The catch is that YOU ARE IMMEDIATELY RESPONSIBLE FOR MARKETING THE ALBUM! but i mean, with a couple MILLI's in yo bank account, u are EMPOWERED to go all out like we see Nigerian artists doing!

funny how ikechukwu (met him at Y studios) was saying in Nigeria, the price of a blank cd is more expnsive than a cd with music on it, so it coss u more to bootleg a project than to buy it, i thought this ws ingenious.
well for the nigerian music dx model in general i think it has both pro's and cons, i just dont think in sa we are organised enuf to have a properly running black market distribution like dat. there is somethign that im working on as soon as its protected ill be able to share it with the community but i think we aught to be careful of cutting and pasting solutions and also raising expectations ebyond reasonable and realistic results. ill give you an example, how does one forecast how many copies will their forthcoming project move in SA? anybody with an answer to that please hit me up, but ive seem more flaws than anything else in the way this is currently being done in SA as a result a lot of projects collect dust on the shelves and after a while soem even get sent back to the record labels as a result that makes them even more weary of spending on local projects (more especially hiphop) cos the results dont live up to the HYPE.
but there is still a case, if more than 200k copies of a magazine that caters for HH in SA move annually i dont see a reason why say the best 10 HH releases in SA cant move 200k collectively, as a start.

yeah i checked that naija boy joint peewee, its ok. i do feel people are sleeping on naija hip hop.
they dope cos they do them. pijin engish and native dialect infused in their raps. its funny when local emcees get bashed for not being origional or not incorporating south african elements into their sound, but this is exactly what the nigerian scene is about and has been about. music for the people, in a dialect that they understand and relate to. i think its dope what they are doing, and they are making huge waves everywhere. and slowly but surely west africans are slowly making waves in the states too. regardless of whether some people find them whack or not.
i think naija is way ahead of SA in hip hop, in a couple aspects. shows pull real crowds and real money. granted, cd's may be sold cheap, but they move huge numbers. i could almost go as far as to say that if south african hip hop cd prices where to be cut by about 50%, it really wouldnt do much for sales. (my opinion)
why?? cos even though they may be solid products as far as content is concerned, the market seems to have shifted away from that just good content. selling music isnt all about content any more. its about swag and appeal. i would like to challenge anyone to put an SA top 10 list of rappers that fit that bill.

In my opinion dudes in SA are more about SwaG than naija cats, in the sense that they profess their swag in the majority of their rhymes....

nobody mentioned that having video's on channel-o equated to having money so i dont know where you got that from.
i particularly mentioned west african artists doing well in the US. not nigeria, if you werent in such a rush to respond you would probably have picked that up. Ever watched videos of live hip hop/ hip life performances in naija? these dudes, pack stadiums. i'll try up one soon, if i get a chance to. you guys seem content with packing tiny club venues with poor sound. and even then, still struggle to fill up the joint.
im not going to knock your hustle dplanet, because its clear that you had a goal from the onset, and you have been consistant and patient enough to see you plans through and are now bearing the fruits of your labour.
it is not my intention to come on hear and force my opinion on anyone, but i hold firm to the fact that naija is ahead of sa as far as hip hop is concerned. i havent been sent here as their emba**ador cos im origionally from ghana lol, but i was just someone who picked up on a thread and dropped an opinion.
the hip hop africa thing was a waste of time. i purposefully didnt comment on that thread so that i didnt hurt anyones feelings. there were people saying that snazz was hot and what not, but i believe everyone sucked. sure, some worse than others, but snazz sucked too. i guess its a good thing that none of us were judges there

I agree with you - no one came out of the battle thing looking good, but Snazz was definitely the best of a bad bunch. He was the only one that put together proper, meaningful, non-abstract punchlines and addressed the person in front of him.

This isn't about me versus Nigeria - I just want to see proof of what you're saying. I'm just ignorant to the West African scene and I haven't seen it making an impact anywhere (apart from on Channel O), that's all.

i understand then, since you say that you are ignorant to ongoings of the nigerian scene. but then it makes it strange for you to say that SA is still ahead with the little knowledge you have of the naija scene. i make the statement not only cos im based in SA and know about the movement here, and i also tend to follow what is going on the nigerian scene evertime i can with the limited resources that i have.
but like i said, if you feel that SA is ahead of Naija, great, its your opinion. i still feel Naija is ahead of Sa, and its not my place to find the evidence to convince you or any one else. if anything, i feel its that very mentality that is suffocating local hip hop here. people dont seem to be allowed to have opinions or do what they wan to do. they have to conform to certain standards that individuals come up with. if not, they are labelled as clones and the likes.
as long as that happens, there will never be growth here.

I've lived in Nigeria, and currently live in the States, No African Hip Hop artists except Akon is "BIG" in the states, and he grew up here, he's from Jersey City, his dad from Senegal, and he's travelled back and forth, as far as that goes, are there Nigerian Hip Hop CD's being sold over here? yes they are, usually they're bootlegged copies and you average bottlegger at the 7/11 out here is not going to have it on deck, you gotta look pretty hard to find it, you can find the stuff in little Nigerian stores here and there like at the West End Mall in Atlanta, where they sell Nigerian Food Products, Music and stuff of that nature, the thing is there are a lot of Nigerians living in the States in Atlanta, in Houston, TX, in NY, Philly (i think the biggest community is in Houston). a lot of them are cab drivers, and if you ask, some of them might be able to play you some 2face or some thing like that, if you ask a hip hop head who knows his shit out here, and that wasn't born yesterday about african hip hop, i believe MC Solaar would be the first and maybe only cat people remembered, maybe Prophets Of da City, and if you get one of the Def Jukie kids, they might know bout Cashless Society. Nigerian Hip Hop is only big amongst Nigerians in the States.
