I am f***in tired of American taking one-sided stories of Africa, where it's all the negative stuff; death, poverty, corruption, AIDS.....the list goes on and on. Can't they make a movie about the good stuff in Africa?

Saw the flick the actor who played mandela, failed dismally on the voice and the accent part.

the actor is Denzel once again.. from Biko to Mandela. accent very wack. Americans playing Africans is unjustifiable period.

In Sarafinna the presence of Whoppi might not be satisfactorily justified but she created the good reception the film needed 2 succeed overseas.
CRY,BELOVED COUNTRY WITHOUT JAMES EARL JONES AND RICHARD HARRIS WOULD HAVE BEEN ANOTHER FLOP OVERSEAS regardless of the line-up of local stars.

On  the other hand,YOU DONT INVEST MONEY IN A VENTURE WITHOUT MONITORING ITS CHANCES OF SUCCESS,THaTS NOT 2 SAY THAT CASTING FOREIGNERS 2 PLAY LOCAL characters is necessarily good, becoz having Denzel Washington playing Steve Biko in Cry freedom  did not go down well with me despite his dubbed Xhosa accent.

So instead of criticising Hollywood we should rather rally behind initiatives such as Jeremy Nathan's dv8 & build own industry.

In South Africa, when it comes 2 movies, we put a lot of emphasis on the storytelling aspect, even going as far as veiling it in patriotism & fallin blind 2 the fact that after the final take the people in front of & behind the camera must eat  Real talk.thos state of the art edit suites have 2 be paid for u know?

On top of that, millions of rands are needed 2 market these stories in order to cajole movie fanatics into budgeting 4 them & their partners 2 go 2 the cinema.

When it comes 2 local movie being promoted overseas,US/overseas Cinema goers would rather watch L Jackson or their hero in a Blue SAPS uniform than Zola or the way whos the SA action hero,i dont know.well f*** it.
and also they wouldnt want. Can we say they want their money's worth? OH! HELL NO! they want their own people.they love their  comfort zones.

That is why i dare say that YIZO YIZO director Tebogo Mahlatsi was misleading the nation when he claimed in a magazine that "for him the apex of his filmaking career would not be when his films are judged by hollywood/international Film organisations but  when they r critiqued by township people after screening at a community hall.

ALL LIES,LIAR

Our first experience of "bioscope" was foreign prints & for a filmaker 2 diss hollywood either implies psychological self-sabotage or the green eyed monster.

Mahlatsi is a typical ghetto brother who fails to see the broader picture.Money not pride or patriotism makes movies.Good movies make good money.

It was very difficult 2 understand the outburst caused by the arrival of L JACKSON & FRENCH actress Juliette Binoche to star in COUNTRY OF MY SKULL. (4 those of you lil ones who do not know the movie the movie is based on a novel about  the Truth & Reconciliation)People in South Africa feel it should be the norm that when a South african story is filmed it should star local actors.besides In South Africa there is not a pool of good actors 2 choose from.
