TRAINING GROUNDS

The fact that we focus most of our energy on the so-called ‘underground’ should come as no surprise. After all, our culture developed itself, not on air, but on the ground. This is not to say that the efforts of those who have cracked the mainstream have gone unnoticed, instead it’s to capture the activities on the training grounds.

Taking a look at the South African soundscape, it’s easy to see that there is a clear imbalance. I mean, out of a thousand active hip hop artists, only four will be playlisted on the radio this year. Out of eight hip hop sub-genres, only two will be heard on air.

Over the past year, we have worked towards creating that balance, realising that it is more valuable for us to create a platform that favours the under-developed or under-exposed side of the industry. In this way, we aim to help boost the rest of the culture while our mainstream soldiers keep our place amongst the stars.

What makes this particular issue so valuable to the game is not the image on the front, nor is it the words on the inside, but the science behind it all. In the previous issue we struck a deal with you. We promised a local cover in return for your support of local covers which should result in a string o local covers. Thanks for copping this one. Placing an artist such as Sharpa on the cover symbolises perseverance… sticking to your guns no matter what. In other words, not selling out. I mean, plenty of cats switch up their steez to try and accommodate the market, often coming out with an unnatural sound. Then there are those who work at what they know until they are so good at it they become icons. Street legends. The greatest. This issue is dedicated to the training grounds. Your day will come.

Gud look that his on the cover- Ben Sharpa, i hope all the media support these cats
is gettin will pay off. Cos ive seen many artist who get all the hype and end
up becoming "nothing". I see Mr Selwyn on a daily here in Randburg and it looks
as if he is back to a 9 to 5. From music videosm, heavy radio rotation and magazine
covers and all back to square one. Why? becos he didnt get there by soley by merit
but becos he knew people who new people and he was in the right place at the right
time. I know for a fact that to make it in this game has very little to do with
your talent but has everything to do with who you know. Im just saying......

I aint tryna hate on the artist cos his doing what i would do if i were in his
shoes, try and get as much out of the people i know in the right places as possible.

But it doesnt do anything for Hip Hop if most of the content is bias. Theres many ways
to make it and many people to talk to. All i know is most editors, radio joks, video joks
and connected artist with very little impact to make in the game come and go...but
true artist who are real to the chore last until the end of time.

All the best to Ben-Sharpa, and Spaza as a whole!!!

But then further down the line, quitting rap and going back to the SAME j.o.b u had, thats what i call FALLING BACK BAD!
dont u think?

Respect to dude tho! "Get ya paper by ANY MEANS NECESSARY!"

ps. on the T-shirt thing!
I think its a whack idea.ie. Buy one local hiphop CD a month!
u cant force niggas to buy garbage albums!
the T shud read" Buy Good Shit, let these whack maf***ers Starve!!!" ;D ;D ;D

But buying more HYPE mags! thats a better way to promote SA hiphop! the mag is a channel for artists to get exposure! the more we cop! the more get printed! the more STATUS the mag gets! the more outlets it reaches! the MORE WE GET EXPOSED! the more money we make! nobody loses!

With buyin Albums! the listener loses! cos the music he's buying is KAK!
upcoming artists lose! cos people so sick of hearin KAK they wont even bother listening to new cats!
The labels get pissed cos they signing KAK cats who aint sellin no more!
They KAK on U, when u try to get a deal!
cos now theyd rather sign afro pop artists who arent a**ociated with KAK!
everybody loses! let these whack niggas starve, retire, grow old, alone and die broke! ;)
lets get rid of the KAK! ;D ;D ;D ;D shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit!!!! jus my 2 sense!

That's the thing, you have to carve your own opportunities. Meet the right people. Make your own opportunities. We're humans, not machines, so everything in life is about relationships. Being all angry that your not allowed in the 'special media club' where all the opportunities just fall into your lap is not going to get you anywhere. Keep grinding - make your product the best it can be, then go out and market yourself. Let people know you're around. Write your proposals, write your motivation letters until someone feels you - then you'll be in that special media club too. It's not that hard.

A lot of doors will close in your face, but it wouldn't be any fun if it was easy.

Although I have yet to read it, I find it very interesting that the mag features a piece on how to get your songs playlisted on radio stations when Ben Sharpa, who must have had (and probably still has) significant trouble doing just that, is the cover star.

Perhaps he'll find it useful.

Kinda of a stupid thing to say, ben ain't the problem, his music just don't fit weak a** local radio playlists, funny how his shit is getting bumped in the U.K? Or maybe you tryna be a smart/dumb a**? DICK

Hmmm. No, actually, I was referencing something D said about Sharpa's tracks not "fitting the format" for radio play. I just thought it was a strange juxtaposition. I would love it if he got bumped here as much as he does in the UK. And let's ease up on the baseless insults.

I'm not sure it's a strange juxtaposition Rob. Sharpa deserves a place on the cover because of his commitment to his art despite all the obstacles in the way. However, Hype isn't just about uncompromising, 'underground' Hip Hop, so a little inside info on how to work the system is also a valid thing for anyone who is aiming to be more commercial.

I don't think there's any point getting pissed off with radio for not playing Sharpa (or any other local music that 'doesn't fit the format'). They are slaves to the majors and until the government introduces local music quotas nothing is gonna change.

Relationships or not, being real is all that matters...i aint gotta put you on
cos i like you and you fit my standards of living. Some people dont embrace or take
too kindly to people who dont share the same views as them. But you right...its
all about relationships, but just cos you got a relationship it dont mean yoll gotta
close doors for people who are not part of your "special media club". But i
guess thats how it works in this world. U aint gotta like me to show me love, just
be real and respect my shit. Anger is good, never supress emotion just
express appropreately. I aint mad at anybody...i just hate the system for real!
Show me love and ima show real love back!!! It would be fun even if it was easy...im
sure your experiances of hardship are different from mine so you wouldnt
understand...but i know we all got shit to deal with, but some of us have been dealt a
bad hand but i aint gona FOLD, if you know what i mean.........

Noone has said anything about the music.

Track 3. Maggz it's a given, but Dome and Omen? :o Dome's verse especially though is heavy on the rewind. "..but it's not them, it's the stress..." :D Too tight.

Track 4. Koldproduk. I said on these boards months & months ago dudes are sick. Right now I can't figure out whether or not the Maggz joint is tighter than the Kold joint.

Track 5. Slikour and Stethascope actually bang out something I think stands neck to neck with Jigga and JD's "Fallin." Too completely different approaches to the falling concept. Mmmm, but nah, can't hate on the way JD had that machine-gun-drumming just in the right place when the music breaks on the Jigga version...I'm rambling, Stethascope brought heat too.
Side note: It's a trip thinking bout the Dre, Timbo vs JD hate. Dre and Timbo are living legends, monsters of their respective domains. But JD flipping music like "Burn", "Little Mimi", that Dem Franchise boys snap jazz, that Bow Wow adolsecent market jazz, then knocks out something like "Fallin."...damn that beat. :o

Anyway, I must've listened to "Break" #3 & "How we ride" #4 for half an hour to 45mins the first time round before I moved on. That's fire. That "Break" is so fresh it's ridiculous. Omen and Dome can actually REALLY spit like...uh forget it. I'ma go put it on now.
