Tell us bout da line up. Its inspiring to see a cat do it from heart, thru da bullshit industry S.A is about, u have branded hardcore hiphop. Hip hop is after all about expression and when people tell u want language to rap in or what content to focus on, they might as well rap themselves.

Lookin forward to da Site, it betta have forums couzo!

If u hav to sell it, how much are we looking at?

If its gonna be free, i'm sure it wont be that much of a mission to get it out there...

It only starts being a real mission if u gonna sell, everybody wants a cut...

Lets see how it goes wit the sponsorship...does the project include any of the songs that wer supposed to be on the album?

I think I read somewhere that Gallo couldn't clear your samples or something, and that you had to start the production on your album over, is the mixtape a result of that? is this what would have been the album? and then the newer joint will follow?

haters alert !  ................. heheh joking

anyways Dude, what i want to know is what is the direction of this album, u check when i listen to yo first two projects , they are dope but i get this feeling that the growth was not much, in terms of beats and rhymes, u still were rapping around the same topics, the same style, basically i cant separate tracks and allocate them to a certain period of time, if u get wat i mean.... lets say some tracks u now that this was mos def in 98 and this is him in 2005 u check...

would u say that this time around u have grown and u are going to bring some different on the plate, something to say that u are ahead of the pack in innovation.... like the last Tumi album that was him stepping in another direction and i liked it, to tell the truth, Tumi was dope but the packaging of his music didn't touch me proper....and i guess traveling around opened his eyes,

you dope dude, but that growth!!! we need it,,,

I can't remember dissing him. I think I called you the bitch for dissing him and Tumi and calling them old and past their sell by dates, when you first came on the site, and suddenly now they're your heroes. Then the old cat was good enough to cosign on your weak DVD too. Amazing

What happened to "Those niggas are irrelevant. We're the new school. they need to pa** the torch, cos they aint doing shit for hip hop."

Maybe I did diss him, can't remember. Don't care. At least I'm not here acting like I never said his career is over and all he knows is punchlines. I know you did. Too lazy to dig up the thread though. Maybe Tate can help.

As much as that will please alot of ppl, its not necessarily the best way to go...as  not every1 has access to high speed internet...but it is one of the ways...

Like Dpleezy said: Try everything...

If u did spend some of ur own money to fund the project, then i guess u shud work on recovering some of the costs...
This is yo 1st mixtape project and i believe most of us wud love to hav a hardcopy and not just the electronic version...

Speaking to Cash and Dplanet is not a bad idea at all...u just have to decide how many copies u wanna press and take it from there...
but i think the more u press the cheaper it becomes...

I'm sure most of the tracks(if not all) wer recorded at a proper studio and we'll be gettin a good product...

Headz wont mind paying a bit in order to get their copies...u already worked on the cd cover, it wud be a pity if u didn't press any...

Maybe also speak to Buff Pound...they doing a gud job pushin the beatoven mixtape...

QOUTE LORD PYRO -

We're just trying to let Cash see that just because Pro said they're nice, it doesn't make it so.
I have the right to question whoever I want. If he takes it as an insult, so be it.I knew him way before he became Proverb, when he was still hangingout with Gopolang and rolling around in Thaba Nchu, and I know he is a nice dude.

What's funny is, you used to run you're mouth about "old rappers" and how they're not worth shit and I'm sure you mentioned him in there as well. I'm just not in the mood to go searching through your old posts though, to prove it. Now that he's given you props though, he is the all knowing.

Get the f*** out of here.

QUOTE CASH :

like i said, i took the interaction with PRO as POSITIVE.
i cant stop yall if yall wana see it in a negative way.

Theres no reason to question PRO's credibility now Rob. Nobody's flawless. and we all make mistakes. He's still a cool dude in my book and worth looking up to! He's a role model for hiphop niggas on the come up!
I may not go with his style of hiphop, but im definitely takin notes on his hustle!
He got Rap(MC),Radio(presenter and Sound Engineer),TV(presenter) and I.T
Im similar, im tryin to get into all them aspects of media too.
Ive got Sound Engineering,Studied Computer Science, have worked on radio, want to get on TV and as far as hiphop, im a rapper, producer and record label. and most importantly, im aware of BUSINESS PRINCIPLES!

Its just those similarities that i feed off of!

lol. dude, yes, of course i came out guns blazing at my immediate competition, THE OLDER HEADS(incl.Proverb), but after my interactions with him my perception changed.
I think its great that ME n VERB can share information even though we are from different schools of the game.
Why not?
Its a step forward.

I suggest you let go, and start moving forward as well.
Why cockblock(no homo) positivity and progress?

i liked the commercial you did with magz, im sure you still remeber it

i have to be honest with you bra magz killed you in that advert

he is sick on the battles, thats his thing, he loves doing them coz i once saw him in some other local drama/short series
he was killing everybody he was battleing man, he was just killing it.

i also saw him in joburg i think it was last year midjune, we asked him for a battle

but i wasnt the one battling, my friend was,

he killed him within a minute, yho he is tight, i also heard that he is busy working with psypho { generations boy} but im not sure what they are doing together

1) Fees depend on number of things like when is the event, who's the sponsor. what is required of me exactly, length of set and who's doing the booking. I'm generally reasonable and always willing to negotiate. Booking details and contacts on the website www.proverbmusic.net

2) When invited out, the host always carries travel and accomodation costs. Unless of course it's a JV (Joint Venture) like say a lauch or a promotional event, then you agree and contractualise how costs are going to be split, but generalli it's on the hosts bill.

Son Booking details including management contacts are all on the website www.proverbmusic.net

"The Pro-File" is a training slot so I have many limitations. 1stly it's not a hiphop show as the station already has one (Touch) and secondly I'm monitored very closely so everything from the way I speak you'll notice I use minimum to no slang.
Then all the music is scheduled for me so I have no Carte Blanche and have to follow a strict playlist.
The contract is one year and hopefully if I do well it will be extended into the new fiscal with a lil more creative freedom.
I also have a "stand in" contract which means exactly that so whenever one of the DJ's is away I'm considered to stand in. They usually throw me in Touch's show when he's absent as their aware that "I am Hip Hop"

Don't wanna sound like I'm making excuses but the truth is: My management team is tryina secure a sponsorship for the mixtape.
The interested parties have they're own processes which are really dragging. The time of year does not help either as most companies start closing their books.
The tape is ready and has been ready for a while now it's all the meetings back and fourth that are really killing me. On the one end I could just drop the dam tape and move on with life, on the other I stand to get major support and financial backing and establish relations for future endeavours (not to mention make serious cheese in the process)

To make up for the delay I keep leaking the oca**ional joint 1st James Bond and now Bread Winners ft HHP has hit radio.

I'll be completely honest with you fam I been spending most of my career thus far focussing so much on conceptual albums and quite frnakly I miss the good ol emceein. Now when I say emceein I mean lyrical warefare I mean straight uncompromised spittin and rippin beats apart. The kinda hip hop we grew up on where cats just black out and colapse into lyric.

Yeah, Most def...I've got both of Your last Albums and they aren't cla**ics for nothing. That is what You're known for. Straight to the jugular, no holds barred lyricism. Its a shame about the the samples thing. one would think that with the backing these majors have, they'd have no problem. I was jus talkin to Reason about that. I'll be in Jozi on the 20th to meet Reason and Nthabi and Maybe Explicit face to face finally. Hopefully One day I'll get to meet You. But Reason want's Me to do some stuff for Him. I've already got a track on Nthabis' Album, but She says She's just going to tantalise me and keep me waiting. She said She Killed It. Which Producers Do You Really Want To Wor With On This Project?

I stay on the hunt for new producers constantly son, so if you're sitting on some heat send it before your a** burns! proverb11@gmail.com

i might jus take u up on tht offer dun...keep doin what u do.........ONe

Lol... as if you might not take that offer son, who you playing?
Im saying,Clearly your asking of the question was born out of the hunger for that oppoturnity, just like any up and coming producer who wants big names on his shit... There's nothing wrong with that hence I find the 'macho man' facade in your speech rather unnecessary.

No diss man, I know what you gonna think  ;).

Son your joint is not bad it's alright.
I'm not a fan of the double vocal recording on the verses it tends to make the joint sound like one long hook.
(Personally) I prefer to have one main vocal recording on the verse and then doble the backing vox plus a adlib channel
then double or multiple layer the hook, preference I guess.

accepted, my man. i just feel that hip hop, of late, has gotten to a point where it undermines its own progressive nature.

is there really a reason to mimic the media conglomerates in objectifying women; in subjugating homosexuals?

we are supposed to be smarter than that!

to be honest, a very comfortable dissent comes from the verses of your average progressive hip hop composition.

its easy - as the people on this site have demonstrated - to bitch and picket against whatever 'worthy' cause hip hop might pick up - like xenophobia for example - and yet no one bats an eyelid for the homosexual teenagers who get stoned to death in our townships.

where are we going?

are we counter-culture or are we complicit?

Re:Reason - There seems to be a breakdown in communication between the people that recorded the album, the people supposed to mix the album and the record company.
He's done all the work and continues to record while all this is happening and intends to take matters into his own hands and coordinate everything himself (which was my advice to him) and while we at it, the few joints I heard a really top notch, this kid is trully the future!

Re: Ma Management - Son they're cleaning up what is a reall messy situation. My management team is tryina make sense of the rubbish Gallo is doing. It's because of them there's any direction in my career right now. Things have deteriorated at Gallo (they don't like me to speak on it) but half the staff has been retrenched including the people that brought me on board. The new MD is back end of Feb so I'm in limbo until then. You can't imagine the frustration but I try and stay sain but keepin busy with the few shows that come in, my website and my new found love: The Exclusive!!

Had a meeting with Channel O this morning about HeadRush and how we need to take it to the streets cause that's where Hip Hop lives and they feel me. I need to conceptualize.. I was thinking something like Open Mic sessions or freestyle fridays at club whatever you know that kinda thing, maybe I should engage with fellow heads like yourselves and we cook up a nice young concept to propose get a sponsor and take it round the country/continent. what say you?

first one- is that your album cover with a 19? please man, dont say yes coz if it really is your cover, i swear to god im not listening to your music again and im going to burn all the proverb music collection that i pirated including the book of proverb disc that i bought from my pirate reliable sources.

second one- how come you always reply only to your thread? dude i know milk gave us the authority to markert our music here on ag, but this doesnt mean that u have to post only on your thread, this proves that u careless about agians and what they think, i highly doubt if u even view the threads, u just sitting there in that radio station chair and in front of that stuff pc and only checking out your thread, why? u a agian now, f*** your status, we all agains and we supposed to share some ideas up in this bitch.

son 1stly thank your support and I acknowledge your attempt to get the disk.
Why would I neglect Cap city when I know I could move good numbers that side? The system fails us and we can have debates about where it goes wrong and blame record companies, stores, and bla bla bla..

I say to hell with them let's find a way around them then seing as they're not gon support!
If you like we could arrange a day and time and I'll deliver copies myself for you cats to get.
The problem with doing things that wa is capacity can I get to all the heads across the country?
but I'll certainly try.
Cats like Osmic really help and I was in Durban this weekend literally selling cd's at Fashion cafe and I'm speaking to Black Moss about helping me distribute in Durban.

We can always find fault that's the easy part it's the solution that's difficult.
I say if you like we can engage and you help me get product to PTA.. you and I strike a deal, PTA has a link and everybody wins..

I've personally sold about 130 copies I've shipped another 100 or so copies to cats to move (Osmic, Buff, Black Moss, Jobie and em..)
got a couple more orders to process..
If I had more capital, plus capacity and reach I'd be doin even better!
I find that generally cats are willing to buy they just not willing to go round lookin for it. but if you bring it to em they cop it with no hesitation.

This weekend I was out in PTA to jump on a crazy Posse joint by my Boy N’veigh called “7:30″. Produced by Nyambo, the track has a heavy line up which includes: Ceida Crook, BlackLez, Reason, Ravenous, Mothipa, N’veigh of course and Yours Truly was invited to complete the 8 pack of emcees. This joint will be on N’veigh’s upcoming album with the same title “7:30″

Was alerted by my boy over the weekend that Write of Pa**age was available at “Look & Listen” Menlyn PTA. Went there to deliver posters and Promo material, only to run into a head snatching the last copy. This means Write of Pa**age should begin to surface at stores around the country, if it’s still not in a store near you please be sure to pressure them to order stock, they cannot ignore demand..

Aaight I don't have the official numbers from Gallo but I can confidently tell you that in my personal cpacity I have moved 275 cd's and I've collected another box of 25 literally an hour ago. so about 300 cd's if we consider this box sold. I'm also doing a charity gig on Friday and they've ordered a box of 25.
but this is me on my own, I'm sure Gallo has registered some numbers I'll find out where they are. If I had cpacity and I could get to all the heads across the country I'm confident that we'd be doing serious things with this album.

agreed I just don't have capital fam, to record an album alones runs into The R100k's
but mainly capacity and time to run this properly. you see it's not the only thing I do..
My bread comes from elsewhere and I couldn't compromise it to focus on something that doesn't garuntee returns.
It's also a lousy industry in my opinion the creative element is what we all love but the other end, the "business" is the Bullshit!

collected another box to slang out the boot! Stores are still lethargic, but it has begun to surface slowly. The next problem is that when they do get stock they have like 3 or 4 copies which usually move the very afternoon they land. So the hustle continues, all the foot soldiers are also doing well to move the product and I’ll be replenishing them as time goes. I myself continue to grind and go all out for this album. Big Up for all your support. The digital release date is May 29th I’ll up the details..

eish everybody invoices fam
from the producers, the studio time, the engineer, then of course this thing has to be mixed then mastered, then the sleeve design, the session fees from muso's and trust me I try by all means to keep costs low but it's near impossible especially if you want a quality product.

Thaso called me up and introduced me to a young cat by the name of Casper and played me a banger of a beat on which he mentioned they’d like me to jump. Naturally I obliged and so this morning we laced the joint! The title of the track is “24hrs To Greatness” Casper is new generation Motswako flavour and of course your boy delivered a saucy 16!! The track’ll be on Casper forth coming album “School Drop Out” See Pics of the session Here: http://www.proverbmusic.net/blog/2009/05/thasos-new-talent-casper-features-proverb-on-hot-joint/

Nah not a session fee but I do request a percentage on the publishing dependent on my contribution.
In this case I'm entitled to 40%

To put it simply, whenever the song is played on radio or used for an ad or played on the net or used in some marketing exercise or Promo or a video is shot and it gets rotation, I get 40% of the money made from that over and above the mechanical royalties that I'm entitled to just by virtue of being a contributor to the album. Mechanicals are percentages from each phycal copy sold. that's a standard percentage tho not up for negotiation.
Where cats go wrong in my opinion is they wanna see dough up front, this means you are payed as a session musician and it's like your contribution is bought out from you and you forfeit any publishing ownership thereafter.
Hope that makes sense.

Absolutely!! Cats just don't realize the value of maintaining some sort of ownership no matter how low the percentage.
They's rather get their 3 grand or 5 grand now and loose out on a potential 100Grand in 15years (not exact figures just making a point)

But then again, some Deejays don't fill out their SAMRO forms, which means artists loose out on publishing. ICASA should tighten their legislation on that, and things can then only start improving.

Two cents' worth ;)

this is why they're not allowed to play from disks anymore but from the system cause it records what has been played and those reports are sent to Samro!

sounds interesting but i dont really dont dig the concept of the title because some people will think that this dude is just trying to counterfeit kanye's swagger or some shit, u know how these ignorant fux does, but its all good man

pro i got a question, since you contributed almost everything on this album or shall i say since you done this album almost indipendntly, what happens in terms of beats and recording, do you buy beats from dudes or you compose your own beats and which recording studio do you use, is it yours or did you negotiate with some other party for the recording sessions?

and your airplay, are you the one responsible for the airplay of your music or someone else manages that kind of stuff for you and what does it take in order for a song to be played on national radio, are there any payments or compensations made in order to get the track bumped on air?

your truly mad

Nah son the beats I negotiate resonable fees but ultimately the "Wreck'ed" Company pays it (it's all technically me paying anyway I'll explain)
I do record at home to save some costs execpt colab joints (cause I don't want cats in my house) then I book a studio usually Jazzworx who then invoice me.

As for airplay - it used to be easier to get play but it's become difficult. Now stations got all their lil quotas and listening commitees. Previously you would just give it to a dj and if they feel it they would blaze it silly. Now you gotta submit and a week later it's given a hearing by some commitee and if it's not a certail tempo or style or sound or whatever imaging the station is going for then it's considered for airplay and how much ariplay and how long etc it's really quite a discrimatory system bcause it means you can't come with new innovative styles and approaches to music "It won't fit their imaging"

Zuluboy ft JR, A.K.A, Pro, Sugar Smax, K.O & ProVerb - June 16 Tribute

Was invited by Phila of Live to come and jump on this June 16 tribute. The joint is a remake of one of Zuluboy’s joints and features the finest of SA. Zulu, A.KA and JR had already laced their verses by the time I got there so I quickly revised a pieced and laced my 8 bar. While laying it down Pro & K.O (Of Teargas) stepped in the building. The song sounds real fresh and is to be performed tommorow evening on SABC one’s LIVE!!

Yo, after a thorough listen yesterday, I'm pleased to say that my money wasn't wasted, AT ALL!!!

Can't single out any trax, the entire material is dope. I did find myself skipping one track though, seemed all over the place. Beat too loud...something just wasn't right.

The level of production, I shall re-iterate, is absolutely bonkers :o

Proverb managed to choose a range of producers who seamlessly brought the project together into one bag of liveness. Props, dope album ;)

Many said your first project standard wont be exceeded by your next comings but i feel the material is balanced and developing in terms of moods and vibes of your beat selection.

How does one book Head Rush for gig reviews and will you ever do interviews about underground cats who push their music online and on the streets with no record deals outside of J-sec?

aaight HeadRush to be honest with you has many limitations and it's difficult to take it to the next level as a result. Also to note that I'm the presenter only and can therefore only make recommendations but the final descisions lie with the production house and the channel. That being said it's difficult to travel outside Jozi because of budget restrictions and also to put cats on because most of the time they don't have videos of that O will air and that renders them irellavent to the rest of the continent (This is what we've often been told)

@ Pro

Great thing you are doing with the Unite Against hunger campaign. You are a true example of a humanitarian indeed. I spent R190 for your album, R80 for the CD and R110 to get it down to Grahamstown. Money well spent I must admit. It's a quality project. In fact We played and reviewed the CD on the Hipocalypse a few weeks ago. People are really liking what they are hearing. Maybe one day We can interview You, if that's okay with You.

ProVerb ft TK - Across the Room “Original Remix”

This was actually the original version of the radio hit “Across the room” and it was supposed to be the version on ma 2nd album “MaNuscript.” However due to some “complications” we had to re-record a different version with Nothende.

TK and I got to know each other during the shooting of the Always Keep Moving Dance Competition and she agreed to hop into studio and feature on a song. Unfortunately she has since pa**ed but her music and her sensational spirit will forever live on. Rest in Peace TK..

Heard part of that interview and I cnt help thinking, ppl ask U the same questions all the time!

How does that feel?
If I have 2 ask them, I wud really go hard on you, like, why does it take U long to write 8 bars?It took U long enuff @ Nyambz place,THASO's en list go on...

Dont get me wrong,Im AG's culprit,a fan of many(U included) and an instigator 4 nuttin'.

I may have missed this,bt if U had 2 explain yo album title, does it have a lot to do wit yo scripting technique,or...? (eish,I nid 2 ask my job @ radio back)

thanx 4 puttin' ppl on wit my blog,if U like u cn add bleksperm.wordpress.com too - and I'll owe U an exclusive wit yo vocals I bootlegged 4rm somewhere.

The allegations made here are seriosu indeed. Verb, do you wish to defend yourself?

I once heard someone say a rapper who uses backtracks may not use the term emcee to describe himself, since he is then no better than a Britney or Miley. How do you move the crowd with bactracks Pro? We must know?

Not trying to incite anything. Just asking?

lol! my understanding of backtrax must be different. they are meant to enhance the onstage performance if u aren't performing with a hype man! they are meant to supplement you i.e the adlibs and backing vocals u would have had with a hype man or band with backing vocalists

For Live shows I always use Backing tracks with backing vocals and hooks to thicken it up!
If you're reffering to the "Live" performance (Which I think you are)
They're not set up for a Live mic performnace it so to avoid it sounding bad on tv it's safer to mime (which i'm not a fan of)
You have the option of them opening the mic but based on previous performances on live and watching others perform
it sounds terrible so on Live & Jam Alley and those kinda shows I let the original song play and on stage and for tv shows that provide
adequate sound and time for sound checking we go live (always)

ProVerb “Break” music video. Taken off the cla**ic “Write of Pa**age”  Shot by DJ Jobione using the Canon 5D MK II.  This was an experiment to see if we could shoot a video with no crew and just available lighting.  We were sitting in the studio playing some tracks when we decided to go for it and shoot the video right then and there.  We shot for about an hour or so, handheld (this was spur of the moment).  We used the 50 mm f1.4 lens, & the video is ungraded (we ended up liking the raw look from the canon)…. watch and then holla back with your thoughts.

I really like it. For a video shot in the manner you described, it's got a nice, soft feel to it that works with the track. Shoulda had a shot of a lady mouthing 'Break' though! Definitely the best track off WOP.

Of course, you're right about that no budget thing. Check this one out:
