Title: Mixtapes
Post by: rob_one on January 13, 2009, 06:05:57 PM
Now I've got respect for mixtape DJs. It takes a lot of work to make a dope tape (or CD, or download, or whatever...) but I'm continually confused about the techniques some of them adopt.

What I want to know is where some of these come from and what their purpose is:

- Shouting over tracks continually. You're a DJ. Shut the f*** up!
- Rewinding the beginning of the song or a single, nondescript line ad infinitum, so by the time the track starts proper you're at the two minute mark
- Track 'snippets'. This is is just f***ing annoying.
- Scratching in sound clips over verses or hooks. These clips bare little or no relation to the music
- Putting unmastered, barely mixed 'exclusive' joints out.

Why do these happen? Irritatingly, Papercutt seems to have adopted most of them, as have a few other SA DJs (Kenny, I'm looking at you...)

Kenny has an incredible amount of hustle, puts on ill parties and is a damn good DJ. But although he kept his mouth shut on the HYPE CD, he could've done a better job on the mixing - to say nothing of boosting the levels.

the shouting dj is a branding exercise, plus a cornball punchline sounds better when the dj goes "DAMN!" or "whoowhoooooo" like a lil white girl on a rollercoaster.

but the bring it back shit is irritating, tbo touch completely sucks at it. dude waits until the last hook of the joint then "hold on touch, your killing em, no matter fact bring that back" f***en arsewipe!

Mixtape Dj's And Their Insistant Talking/Screaming/Shoutout Kak and often below par mixing and scratching spoil good tracks. Yeah I tottaly agree. And there have been a few Hype Magazine Compilations that have been found wanting

Qba's "Gutter Butter" has got to be one of the worst! That dj sounds terrible even if he hadn't been screaming.
Then there's Paperkutt too on the Tumi mixtape, and Kenzhero's Rear & Unreleased Mixtape is not so much annoying as it is flat. Haven't heard the one he made for Hype

Not to mention self preservation through maintaining the "exclusive" nature of the track (where that is really the case). Nobody is going to rip an "exclusive" off a mixtape and drop it with some other DJ's name screamed all over it, and his little gunshots and sirens thrown in. It's miiine, all miiine typa shtuff.

THats why I never hesitate to cop a Static selectah Mixtape - he hhoks nice cuts showing his talent and lets other cats do their thing with their Vocals and Rhymes showcasing their talents  :)

I dont know - Drama jus sounds right when he does it lol - Premo can get rrrrrrrrealy irretating coz he's the one that abuses bringing the track back techniq - but atleast he entertains you with the scratches :)?

but yeah - all these other cats is boring -
White Owl is also on the right track - yes he brands himself but he doesnt over do it and I like the fact that he nomarly uses MC's vocals saying his name - damn - I dont even know what dude sounds like
 ;D

lets hope the trend stays in U.S.A and only a few do it here.

just put the damn track on a cd with memorial service like intro and we'll listen.

I think on a tape is the one place to really go big on branding, not to the point where it interferes with the actual music but I reckon you need to let heads know who's work this is. If a tape is pre an album (e.g the nigger tape before the "untitled" album) then to fully punt the album and dates etc. 2cents
