Grammy award winning artist Common is often referred to as one of the most thoughtful and gifted lyricists in hip-hop.
His impressive music career began twelve years ago with the release of his debut album, Can I Borrow a Dollar? That effort was praised for its down-to-earth vibe and intelligent rhymes, but the unapologetic middle-cla** sensibilities conveyed on Common's second album, 1994's Resurrection, which yielded the hip-hop cla**ic "I Used to Love H.E.R.," earned him the respect enjoyed by kindred spirits such as A Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul.
Following the release of his deeply introspective third album, 1997's One Day It'll All Make Sense, which addressed serious issues like family planning, Common relocated to New York to heighten his visibility and become more involved in the music industry. Common unleashed 2000's noticeably more musical Like Water for Chocolate. The album was a versatile mix of gravity, sardonic humor and soulful hip-hop beats that spawned the Grammy-nominated single, "The Light." Like Water for Chocolate also signaled Common's emergence as a member of the Soulquarians-a collective of musicians that includes Roots drummer Ahmir "?uestlove" Thompson, beat-maker Jay Dee and keyboardist James Poyser, among others-which reconvened to produce the bulk of 2002's Electric Circus. Circus, Common's fifth album was anchored by an uncommon and refreshing air of open-mindedness, both musically and lyrically. The album included the hit single "Come Close" featuring Mary J. Blige.
Common has been keeping busy since the release of Electric Circus. In 2003, he received a Grammy Award for "Love of My Life," a duet with Erykah Badu from the Brown Sugar soundtrack. His appearance on "Why (Remix)" with Jadakiss, Anthony Hamilton, Styles P., & Nas, garnered him a 2004 Vibe Award for Coolest Collabo. Common left fans hungry for more after he performed "Food" with Kanye West on the Chappelle Show earlier this year. The wait is almost over. Common is currently in the studio working on his new album, BE, with producer Kanye West. BE is scheduled for a May 2005 release

? Is there such a thing as Forum Post Bootlegging/biting?
If there isnt then allow me to state that:
XXL gave "BE" the cla**ic XXL rating in the May issue8O
Quotes:
"birthed '05's top LP"
"For those who requested the raw from an MC accused of having gone soft, Be provides enough dope to OD on."
"Common has created a flawless album."
"he's birthed the total package."
"Common has raised the bar."
Out in June...
P.S JayDee vs Kanye is tough one to call..
-
I am excited to hear this new Common album.
As for the Jay-Dee being Better than Kanye, some may agree, some wont.I dont think its worth a comparison. They dont have the same style of production, and therefore should be credited for what they both bring to the table.I like both their vibes, though I appreciate Kanye's use of samples and pitch-ups a whole lot........but then again Jay-Dee brings those tight ba**lines and has a different warmth bout the beats. Its like a journey of some sorts.I think though, Be may have been just perfect with at least 1 song from Dion himself.Cause No ID has elevated even more since the last collabo with Common.
-
common changed my view of hip hop with his last album
cant wait to get my hands on the new ish :D
-
Do you guys have No.ID's solo album, "BE Yourself and Accept your Own: The Black Album" ?
Doug E. Infinite features on a lot of tracks but Common Sense makes only one(dope!) appearance. It should have blown up if Biggie didnt come out with his "sky is the limit" track. :x
I need to find my copy
Anyway looking foward to this new album but I hope Kanye sticks to doing hooks if he feels like he has to get on the mic.
Its pushed till June.
Chino Xl next month!

All hip hop interview with the dynamic duo-Common, Kanye Talk 'Be':
Kanye West is notorious for unabashedly hyping himself as well as his own artists, so naturally the Chicago rapper/producer has projected Common's upcoming album Be as a cla**ic. Meanwhile, Common has responded to critics who claim West restored his career.
"I'm telling you right now it's five mics [The Source album review rating], five stars [AllHipHop.com's rating system] across the board," West told AllHipHop.com. "Common's album will go down in history."
XXL magazine has validated West’s opinion and given the opus its highest rating of “XXL.”
"On Be, Common plays poet and documentarian, showing us the triumphs and tragedies that occur in Ghetto, USA. Common’s wordsmith wizardry soars beyond stylistics: "It excels at photographing real life,” the magazine praised.
West said he produced the bulk of Be, and Detroit producer Jay-Dee worked on the remainder of the album.
"He's not going back, he's going forward," said West in reference to Common's relapse to his more aggressive side on Be. "There are songs on there that only me and Common could have done together."
While West boasted of the album's superiority, Common envisioned Be as a testament to his evolution as an MC and a slight return to his usual self.
"I don't think I could ever go back to who I was in '94 and '96," Common told AllHipHop.com. "But as you evolve you sometimes go back home, and people say that I'm going back home cause I'm doing raw hip-hop and that's where I began."
Though some critics have credited West for resuscitating Common's career, which has always been somewhat under the radar and non-mainstream, West defended his frequent song cameos as something that is a staple of Hip-Hop.
"I heard a comment [from a critic] like 'Is Kanye on every hook?' and I told Common and he said, 'I don't give a f**k – I like it,'" said West. "And that's what Hip-Hop is about. We don't give a f**k and we put out the songs we like."
Concurring with West, Common said he acknowledged the mega-producer's artistic contribution and ability to draw a larger audience than Common has typically attracted.
Still, Common gave himself much of the acclaim, at the same time expressing appreciation for West's role in his musical resurgence.
"Only I truly can bring back me, however he is helping me to create music that the ma**es and people can enjoy and love," said Common. "I have to give credit where it is due. Kanye has been a big plus to my album and this new part of my career and that is why we are riding together."
Common also proclaimed that the process of recording with West has been reciprocal. "He has been there pa**ionately creating, and with him I have helped him grow as a producer and it is give and take," said Common. "He has helped me create music that everybody can deal with and I wanted and needed that."
As Common prepares to release his sixth album Be, he said he's pleased that he can be himself, and he expects that people will relate to this authenticity.
"I feel like I don't have anything to cover me up so people are feeling that," said Common. "As a person you go through your evolution. But as an artist you go through that in front of everybody. I'm trying on my bad clothes in front of everybody."

@eef_haf
I've got a copy of that NO I.D. Album You were Huntin'
It's a dub from the OG CD.. (CD ta CD).
But Hey I'm here in Nams.....
-
Im really looking forward to this album...its been a while and Common is on my top 5 list of all time easily.
Something that bothers me is how headz always wanna go back to 'that' album. They compare every other album a mcee releases with his cla**ic. That is totally unfair as most rappers will probably at most put out only 1 cla**ic or very good album. Common has always maintained its about growing and evolving and all the hiphop fans who have an open ear and appreciation for music will feel the tip Common is on. I dont want Common to go back to the resurrection days cuz he will NEVER be able to do it again anyway. He is growing as a musician and person. Common is more than just a rapper...hes an artist!
In the words of Nas "Thought Id make another Illmatic, never backwards stupid heres another cla**ic..."
-
Yeah, i've heard ALL of Common's albums. Though not really bad, "Electric Circus" is the only one which doesn't appeal to mean. Common Sense is a gifted artist, and not a lotta pple realize dat
-
U can get the album here :
http://www.sohh.com/forums/showthread.php?t=568425
It tight but definitely not a cla**ic. Subject matter could have been varied a bit more.
