Title: "Speaking in a (not so) Native Tongue"
Post by: Impostor on May 06, 2005, 12:54:05 PM
There is no shame with speaking with an accent characteristic of townships.

I have noticed that more and more individuals have decided that hip hop is strictly American and as such, speaking with a [forced] American accent, either when rapping or when presenting a show etc, is the right thing to do.
Allow me to express my opinion, (if the shoe fits, wear it but please forgive me) there is nothing worse than hearing someone, who comes out of the South-West Townships speaking - or trying to speak - like he was raised in America...

The  reason I am saying this is: I occasionally listen to the Saturday night show on Metro FM, and I listen to this cat "Thibo Touch" and a few of his friends speaking in [very forced] American accent.
I have no problem with Thibo Touch, it's what he does that gets me.

Perhaps there is something I do not know that might change my views.

Please express your opinion

I feel you, and really, I don't like Touch. Well, dug him when he did that 1hr international segment when Zak wuz still on dat (and Zak wuz madd ill!)

But I think he spent sum time in the States, hence the accent (note: in no way am i implying dat being raised abroad means sum1 gotta change dem accent).

Think he spent too much time over there or something, so that's why he talks the way he does. And with all that said, I still don't like his fukkin' a**!

As far as I know, the 1st time Tbo went to the US was when Metro sent him for work like 18 months ago and he was there for bout two weeks..... plenty of time to pick up an authentic US accent neh :?  And also as far as i heard, bruh is from Katlehong. And I'm always catchin cats accent slippin, also it isnt regional, its the generic "hip hop thug" bullshit and its wacker than wack.
That bitch irritates me no end.

yeah, that whole accent thing is real played out. i mean granted, as young south africans we are heavily influenced by whats goin on in the US esp i.t.o the whole urban culture thing. I just don think its necessary for us to be sounding like they do, or tryna sound like them. We hav our own accents down here, and i don think they're anything to be ashamed off, twang if u wanna twang as long as its a south african twang...

I figured what I think on the topic doesn't matter in the bigger picture. Voicing my opinion will not make me any different from any of the posters thus far. Just know that by letting it be there is a bigger picture that one needs to know will come into play and have a profound effect in the long run. Kinda like the ma**es together can make a huge difference, but everyone sticks to their instincts of being seperate indiviuals with no link to the outcomes of inportant social proccesses. Imagine if everyone were to act on something because it was th right thing to do. Too bad it'll never happen like the complete suppression of the voices of those who stand up to the corruption of the powers that be. If it is a sicere cause there will always be someone to take their places.

*Welcome, step right up and participate in the anti-Thiboz from metro fm thread. Over here we slander, slander and slander... Oh, and not to forget slander.*

Lets's get less people specefic. But ja Crazy LU I gotsta be a hipocrite on this one. Did you see him try to freestyle with proverb on One. Not only is te dude wack, his accent's wack and besides that he's on some Nelly singer-mc vibe.

Its not about slander, but about converting the wack.

Problem is , these dudes are so confident in their wackness that I think they need to be confronted by close friends and relatives. . .  an intervention of some sorts.

^^ For real an intervention, only wit razors and baseball bats  .... thing is, Cazy Lu's mommy is his manager, so shes unlikely to participate or even sanction the intervention.
