Now there have been a coupla posts on these Entity cats, now I seen them on Wild Room as guests and I can say they look about 17. They seem to be not half bad emcees, but they seem to lack a lil confidence in any the sense of individual style so they all sound like each other.
I saw part of a quite obviously expensive video where they used a Rockford Fosgate Car Audio demo truck, I know the guy who owns it, and a cigar boat, those big sleek speedboats you always see in US movies that get used to run drugs to Cuba an shit.
BUT..... as far as I know they don't have a track on Metro's playlist, don't know if they getting mad play on Y, but I'm sure I would have heard more of them by now. I think they do have an album out, VERY recently.
Now my issue isn't a hate one.. God knows I wish I had their resources at my disposal....

Saw them on MTV base too. Was surprised at the good quality of the video, but most of all on exactly how young these kids were. Wasn't sure whether they were americano's or not, cos I haven't heard of them either. Now they winnign some award? I smell payola in the mix. I haven't even heard their is on radio yet.

According to all the info available Mulletjie, these kids are under 18 and attend St. Johns College....an extremely prestigious and expensive private school in Jozi. Their video is very expensive and they aren't signed to any major label... so they, or rather their parents payed for it independantly. They might not have trustfunds, but they certainly got mad cheddar....and I aint hatin racially or at all....they black like me and I wish I had their resources...Now read the first post and you'll see what confuses me& others and is the driving idea behind this thread.

This kids aren't too bad for the people they aiming at i.e. Yo TV, Skwatta Kamp fans type people, I definitely wudn't buy this or enjoy it, believe me, i tried, they can rap but lyrically they still have along way to go, their rhymes aren't touching, need to work on the writing but they definitely wud kill the average Nelly-Bow wow Fan. I jus don't feel kid rappers, actually seeing the video now, these kids are actually annoying me, I can't vibe with this, they arent no regular guy rappers talking about everday life shit, they need more years and heartbreak on this biyyaatch called the planet to come up with some heartfelt rhymes. They mad rich though.

Thing is I haven't heard any of their tracks even, I saw the last minute of their video with the sound off while I was on the phone like three weeks ago. I mean it just seemed amazing that me someonewho spends all day sampling various media sources, is relatively ignorant of their body fo work, yet I get my Kora Awards webletter and they feature prominently, as one of the nominees for best rap. Okay so my investigative reporting has yielded the following findings:
This may come across as a response to Syntactic but I think theres some interesting insights here:
"As a representative of Entity Hip Hop I feel the need to clarify a couple of things for you, simply for the sake of enlightenment.
Entity are at present one of the hottest and hungriest acts around. The type of comments on the forums are indicative of why South African hip hop, after over fifteen years of dedicated work by various individuals, has basically done nothing for South Africa as a vehicle of social change.
First off, get a copy of the album. It does not sound like you have heard it and if you had, I think you would be pleasantly surprised.
They have been received favourably by YFM, their staff, Metro, Channel O, MTV Base as well as Hype and shit loads of other print media. NONE of that was paid for, unless maybe through the work they put into the album.
Entity were discovered in Orange Farm (a township South of Johannesburg for all you model C cats, hypocritical private school boys and those who are seeking a more comfy life elsewhere) performing for a ruckus crowd of 6000. I think the AG forum only has 1546 registered members. They were signed on the spot and began themselves seeking funding for their album.
The money that they themselves managed to raise was paid through their parents in according with the law of South Africa, not BY their parents. The fact that they come from a well to do school they share with many MCs and DJs lets not forget nearly half if not all the backpacking bedroom heads in Jozi and sadly now Cape Town who are now running the scene. This has nothing to do with their abilities to rhyme, produce and effect change in their societies.
Only one of the artists actually stays in a dual parent family. The other’s father sadly pa**ed away violently when he was young, and the son the SABC man stays with his single mother. The fact that they attend private school has nothing to do with their access to resource. Its how they have pimped that system that does. They accessed resources because they made it their mission and trust me they will continue to do so, again and again. Unfortunately resource is a priority and if they can work hard enough to come by it, more power to them.
As somebody involved in the industry I find it disconcerting that you would start a badly disguised attack on three young artists who have nothing but love for the scene. As an example, one of the artists only days ago gave up his dream of playing for Orlando Pirates FC where he was playing for years for this art, so understand the commitment is solid.
As one final point I would like to let you know that the KORA awards entail a very specific nomination and application process. Maybe, other than the success of their video in the rest of Africa, they followed that procedure correctly, knew about deadlines and were just a little more professional in their approach than half of these bedroom rappers and their bitchy approaches. You should know how the process works and by elimination I’m sure then realize exactly why nobody else was nominated.
Honestly, Entity are worth the credit they get and when they embarked on the process of refining and publicizing their art they were well prepared for the types of people and platforms bent on bringing down young Africans succeeding in their arena. This is what happens to artists who get out of the backpack and masturbation cycle and start reaching out with a quality product. They get recognised, they get rewarded. The aim now is not to bitch about Entity but to be shamed by their approach and start making similar waves. What were you doing for hip hop when you were sixteen? Dick I’m sure.
Word. Learn, Build, Grow and realize that the day had to come when the yo yos were shown to be a waste of time. Quality breeds success and Entity are just beginning their journey towards influencing their society.

I hate it when BITCHNIGGAS always send their messages thru other people instead of showing up a nds letting us know who they are, So what if i think Entity is wack, they still wack, i won't go out and buy an album jus because some toddler began writing rhymes in preschool, i buy music because i sampled it and found out that i like it, f***, take the criticism and get the f*** outta here. To whoever wrote that artcle, I went through the album, i said above it will go down with Yo-Tv fans, I won't buy it, I don't like what i heard, im sure somebody else will, hence probably they'd win a sama.

If the guy affiliated felt it was "A thinly veiled attack" then thats what he's feelin...frankly I don't see why these guys should even be givin a f*** what any of us think if they doin great... like I said, I wish I had those resources....I don't hate these kids... I don't even know these kids.
the manager guy talks about how they found a new way to pimp the system which allowed them to find the mad cash required to make their great looking vid........ I wish he'd spread that info round.

I'm always shaky on the longevity of really young artists in any genre, In sa we've only had one child artist able to take a career past puberty mzambiya and even he's been quiet for more than a year.
In the US, only Bow Wow's been able to take his career past puberty, and he had an endorsement from Oprah, and an a**ociation with DTP and Birdy from the Cash Money family so they found the crazy cash they spent on his new album.........now these entity cats don't seem to have any big name affiliations, and I don't see the reason the guy should get so defensive when I innocently wonder about how these cats came up so quick....you'd figure they'd be proud of that....
I'd love to have haters, it means you doin sumthin right enuff to warrant jealousy.
Why shouldn't I be allowed to know more about these kids than whats in their bio?
WHy sould it matter whether I or anybody on the AG likes their stuff or not... the manager guy was very quick to point out that they were discovered performing to more peeps than the AG has registered members... so what do our opinions matter?
If their music is that tight, then it won't matter what we say about them...and if they reckon just reading our opinions is going to dissuade a significant market from purchasing their album they don't think much about their market.....or their music.
In fact they should thank us for all the exposure we've just given them right here...cos now at least a few peeps are going to give their album a listen to see if we spoutin shit or not.
So, becos I'm willing to be the bigger man, I'll simply say "My pleasure"... I won't even invoice them.

Mr Manager/ Representative/ Knob-gobbler Sir, please tell us who else was on the bill. what event was this? how long was their set? or were they a filler? and Mr Manager, you won't be responding to any idiot here - many people here know the industry very well and many of us have been in it long enough to know what a crowd of 6000 doesn't look like. mr representative sir, so when can we expect your trio of rising stars to do the cover of Ricardo's I Love You Daddy? so they got favourable reviews from Metro (you can't take them seriously - they've got as much street cred as felicia), Yfm (well they not perfect), Hype (Snap said Don't Believe the Hype) and i'm not gonna mention the others you mentioned. you asked what we was doing for hip hop at 16 - well my response would be that many of us here were getting our feet wet and paying our dues. we were loving the form in order to master is on our level and know what it's about. we were studying the legends of hip hop and exploring music - hence the vast and varying styles that are before you here today. ask the producers here and they'll tell you where they get their influences from - people your mouseketeers have never heard from but heard of. the same question can be asked of you - what were you doing for hip hop at 16? so your boys got a nomination for a Kora - all power to you and them for that matter. where's the groundwork? where's the dues? maybe they have performed for six months to little nymphettes from the burbs at house parties and school halls. you know what - you just a dick rider yourself. in spite of all that you think and say of us - entity will suck and should they win a Kora award, they will still suck but you don't have to like it, but the truth remains. and this is an open invitation for you to join the AG and help us reach that magical 6000 figure and maybe then someone else like you would take our statements and criticisms more seriously - but until then f*** YOU VERY MUCH! :wink:

If I remember correctly, Syn was originally asking how this group had come out of nowhere to become Kora Award nominees. If you ignore all the inflammatory rhetoric about 'backpackers' (and other emotional nonsense), the manager dude was simply explaining that part of a record company's marketing drive is making sure their artists are entered for awards. The Koras (unlike say the MTV Awards) require artists to fill in forms and pay money to enter. Being nominated for an award looks good on an artist's bio and gets the artist a lot of exposure. To quote G-SUS, It's just showbiz :)
Let's not be nasty to these Entity kids though,,, they're just having some fun making pop music,,, nothing wrong with that. Good luck to them.

Everyone sees what they want to see. But with music we make people see what they can't. Or at least think they can't. We contribute to our society's well being by raising red flags for all to see the danger that lies around the bend they're heading for. And we ask little in return except a similar contribution from anyone a**uming a similar post. And the rrspect of those who have come to understand us for who we are. But my opinion is as good as my gut-feeling verbalized so thus stand uncorrected and Tru....The madness of the industry and it's demands on the demise of innocent, unwitting kids like Entity saddens me. It's become the right thing to do to filter out the essence and bring forth a "carbon copy" of reality to share with the whippersnappers and teeniboppers alike. I was 16 too once. And I was still in love with hip hop. But most importantly, I've dedicated my life to the upliftment of myself and my constituency. And I'll be damned if that effort gets filed in the same drawer labeled "Dues Paid" with half hearted efforts from anyone. Believe anything you want to...just believe in what real first then at least you have a platform to build from boys.....

And when he took defensive tactics by mouthpiecing, that sparked a riot. *Remember June 16, 1976*. Call me crazy but I think you have to be an MC to understand what the undertone to the whole shit was. A spade is a spade......If you replace Entity...with a couple of other names......it kinda drives my point home!
