Sports Arena / the SPRING boks
« on: October 23, 2007, 03:36:34 PM »
The victory gave me a reason to wild out. Havin said that I agree with everything that Tornado has said, and sum of wut Rob One was sayin. Tate u just an idiot, whom when failin to engage wit any adversiral views resort to callin people haters, and Dplanet I've come to expect more from u that to be fraternisin wit idiots like Tate and Stix. Comin from a banana republic, Tate wants to support anything wit an air of competence and 'glory'.

In Soweto black rugby players were playin the whole saturday afternoon in protest of the Springboks. Their argument, which I support, is that triumph by the Springboks would validate the racist rugby fraternity that transformation in the sport is not necessary. A friend of mine whose a sport journalist for the Mail and Guardian prophetically said that the media would show taxi drivers and black people jumpin up and downon the drug of patriotism, to suggest that the whole country was behind the Bokke, and therefore transformation in the sport was a preoccupation of a few people. Black rugby players have to be exceptional to play for the national team, whilst everage perfomances from their white counterparts is sufficient to earn em a place. All these people callin Tornado a hater no f***-ALL about the dynamics that govern South African rugby.
Havin said all that, I still supported em grudgingly, I could never support the ARROGANT English.

5. No Hook
6. Roc Boys (And The Winner Is)…

I think the Zubz issue is also emphasizin the importance of institutionalisin our culture. In the US they have the Hip Hop Action Network Summit chaired by Russel Simmons, in the UK they have The Urban Voices a**ociation chaired by DJ Storm, in Ghana they have The Tongues chaired by Scientific. These hip hop institutions preserve the culture through it's public defence, organisin events, intervenin in socio-economic debates that involve the wider society, a**ist artists in makin a livin, etc. But all of them are a reflection of the maturity of the hip hop culture in their repective countries.
With social-economic relations contradictin in South Africa,we are goin to witness more censorship on alternative voices. I'm glad that I don't have all the answers, thus I think we need to start to utalise our collective talents and resources in ensurin the survival of our culture!

If Zubz's video has infact been banned, the whole hip hop community should be outraged. Everyday, SABC and Channel O bombard us wit videos that potray flagrant untruths. We should all take collective action if the allegations are true. We could write a collective letter that we can send to the SABC Board and other newspapers.
This is no time for being petty and stupid, we need unity, regardless of wut we might feel about Zubz's music or video.

I'm not tryin to justify wut most of ya'll consider 'stupidity' when infact  most of ya'll aren't too bright neither, but thats besides the point. TI had been arrested twice before he became a SUPERSTAR- damn ya'll are makin me defend a dude I don't even like! Dplanet truthfully said that other celebraties get security firms to protect em when they make it big. In street hip hop thats frown upon...." Ur favourite rapper such a thug and he fearless/ but why does he need security for his public appearance/ don't think that I'm shook like him/ I'll have ur friends over ur casket sayin'damn that don't even look like him" Spot. Now I don't think there's anything wrong wit people hirin security to protect em, I'd do the same if I had the funds. I however don't think ya'll are in a position to call people who lead a fundemantally different lifestyle from the one u lead stupid.
In the hip hop culture that sum of grew up in, we don't recognise sum of the language being used by sum of ya'll and the contemptous attitude ya'll have towards members of our community. Ya'll sound like judges and cops.
Sum of ya'll should start listenin to gospel, I think u'll feel more at home!

I don't support TI as an artist cause I think his music is trash.
I was chattin to Proverb the other day, and he seems to think that rappers from the U.S go to jail as a publicity stunt or American prisons are five star hotels. A view that would be embraced by a significant segment here on AG. Some of us have created thematic affinities wit the hip hop community and the broader community that hip hop owes its existances to. TI and many other rappers from the ghettos, represent a distorted caricuture of wut happens in the ghettos all over the world everyday. But I don't blame most of ya'll for ur thinkin, I mean the closest most of ya'll have ever come to 'breakin the law' is smokin weed, and thoght u keepin it real. I've personally never been arrested carryin guns, I do know a couple of people that have served time in prison for violent crime. Just for the record I consider rapists, woman beaters and peodophiles scum. I've been arrested twice myself. First time was for agitatin students at Wits in 2003 when I was a student there, to protest against the Palestinian butcher, Shimon Pirez, when he was deliverin a guest lecture. The second time was for disruptin  Erwin's speech when he was still Minister of Trade and Industry.
I've said this elsewhere, I really don't understand how so many of u ended up in the hip hop culture. Was it the 'zoned out' beats, was it the baggy jeans, was it the cursin, or was it the infatile disorder?! I mean most of ya'll are so smart. G-sus has been sayin that a lot of American rappers would not identify with the local hip hop fraternity, if AG, is a sample of the local community- I totally agree.

And we idiots will continue to shout " FREE TI". The rest of ya'll can go consult for the cops and hope for an invite to Oprah to discuss the ignorance of the hip hop generation or how u goin to save it!

General Discussion / HYPE Oct/Nov 2007 Issue
« on: October 10, 2007, 04:19:58 PM »
I totally agree wit Dplanet on this one. I however, think that equatin a consensual homosexual relationship between two consentin adults and a woman being violated(raped) is rediculous!  Hype is a wonderful pplatform for gettin rappers marketed, and we have to applaude the initiative. But when it comes to representin the hip hop culture and the social context that the culture has thematised itself in, the magazine is bankrupt. This is no fault of the staff, it's a caricutured reflection of the infancy of the culture in Mzanzi!
I double agree wit Dplanet' view for a need of more rigorous journalism. I subscribe to the xxl, and one can't help but be impressed by the pedigree of journalism in the mag. It's definatevely hip hop! This inspite of the hypercommodification of the culture.
I'm not hatin, merely sayin that Hype can improve. Dplanet, Rob One, Vexer and Cash should perhaps be given their own columns. I think the four of em best rep the interity of hio hop in Mzanzi.... I'm allowed to dream.

Beesting I accept that u don't comprehend my point, I'm glad that other people like Bricks and Dplanet get what I'm sayin despite their disagreements- which I repect. I don't recall pronouncin ma education level at any point in this discussion, u got issues watch Dr Phil!
I was taught to exit from engagements when people start catchin feelings. And for what it's worth, my opinions and world outlook is not informed by books, which I read religiously, but by my ACTUAL experience with the world.

General Discussion / Cultural Alienation in SA Hip Hop
« on: October 02, 2007, 08:02:50 AM »
Dplanet, It would be idiotic on ma part to simply deny that there is mimicry of 'American' hip hop out here. I however, make a qualitative dichotomy between identification and mimicry. Ma ancestors lived in a pre-industrial society, wit no McDonalds, Theatres, Internet, Skyscrappers German engineered vehicles(which I have fetish for and are only have to a**imilate to ma "culture"), logic dictates that my lexistence, culture, would be different from theres. But I'm glad that u applied ur mind to some of my contentions. In ur response could u paste my original post.

I disagree wit the premise and conclusions of this argument. My primary contention is that the essay is both simplistic and trans-historyeconomical. Further, what is CULTURE? I understand culture to be simply a way of life, not a romantic and static longing to some distant past on how one's ancestory lived. I am not oblivious to the imperialist imposition of their"superior" culture on conquered peoples. However, I think to  equate a culture of alienated inner city kids in North America to the culture of MacDonnald and IBM is a travesty. We need to start understandin that Americans are not a homogeneous people, no people of any country are. In every society, there are the rulers and the ruled, and these two groups have organically different cultures. Oprah and the majority of black middle cla** America don't like hip hop, or atleast in it's entirety cause they feel it's embarra**in.
I've said this before, and I'll say it again- I embrace hip hop culture as my culture wit no apologies. I also resent the fact this persistent reference to "our" culture for it a**umes that had it not been for colonialism, African people would have been blissfully wearin skins and dancin around fire exhibitin their "culture". The culturalists must be immensly proud when they see topless "Zulu" girls dancin to welcome Bush at their airport, they are exhibitin their culture aren't they?

Slickdaddy catch a white man body, then talk about killin the boers. I wonder wut u Africanists would say if the Khoi-San people were to ask all Nguni people to leave Southern Africa cause this is their indegenous land? Would such a demand be legitimate. If u kids are lookin for causes to fight, join the hunderds of thousands of protesters in the townships fightin agaist the consequences of the commodification of services. Writin and readin corny poetry is NOT revolution.
