General Discussion / Re: Ice Cube Appreciation Thread

From AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted to Death Certificate (roughly 1990 - 1992), Ice Cube was unf***witable, IMO. Seriously, he was my favourite MC in those years. He had some cool tunes on The Predator and Lethal Injection, but he never scaled the heights that he did on those first two albums + the Kill At Will EP.

By the way, Death Certificate is one of Hip Hop's best concept albums. And AMW was ahead of its time as an East Coast/West Coast collaboration.

Not heard any of it, but the reviews I read pretty much trashed it. Oh well, we still 'A Constipated Monkey'.

I must confess having never heard a Busta Rhymes album in its entirety. I've never considered him an albums artist. Should I reconsider my position?

LL Cool J, Big Daddy Kane and Heavy D made these kinds of songs a staple of their output in the 80s and 90s, but there are few 'love rappers' of that kind today. But I'm interested in hearing from folks which songs from the last ten years stand out as really interesting ones about romantic love or relationships between men and women. Any ideas?

Edit: By the way, this is a list post.

I voted 'Other'. I have two favourites from this album: Verbal Intercourse and Guillotinz. And I can't separate them.

General Discussion / Re: SA on Discogs

Great job. This work isn't so much about how many people are likely to access this information on the web, but rather documenting key artists and releases in the local hip hop scene, i.e. this is history. Given the small run of a lot of local releases, which often means that work goes out of print quickly, it's useful to have this resource to go back to.

So, thanks!

Will look at it carefully in the near future and help with details. By the way, I see some of the pics used for the POC members' entries were taken from scans that I originally generated for the POC webpage I used to host in the late 90s.

Hot Traxxx / Plain Madnizz - What Kine?

Late pa** probably required, but I need some feedback on this album. For those of you who have heard it, would you recommend it? Tell me a little about the album's sound. And where would you place it in relation to albums by BVK and Kallitz in terms of quality?

General Discussion / Re: tik references in local rap songs
« on: August 18, 2009, 05:07:07 PM »
@witness in silence: the album you mentioned sounds interesting. Suggestions for how to get hold of it?

@motley: What's the name of the Gini track? I've not heard it.

@me and mad! - the glorification of crack turned into an entire genre, and attracted - in my opinion - a few artists to jump on the bandwagon, with the idea that they could attract an audience and sell records that way. I am not sure such gimmicks would necessarily work in the SA context. And besides, my reading of a lot of the MCs from communities affected by tik abuse, is that they would be more interested in dealing with the problem than "playing it up" in their music.

Hot Traxxx / Re: Real Heads Cla**ics Reviews

tell me why this album is a cla**ic

Ego Trippin'
Watch Me Now
Ease Back
Kool Keith Housin' Things
Give The Drummer Some
Ain't It Good To You
Ced-Gee (Delta Force One)

Ho-hum remixes of Travellin' At the Speed of Thought and Funky bring the album down, but mostly because the highlights are just so dope. If you listen to the album, you'll notice that some tracks have a sound similar to that explored and taken to the next level by the Bomb Squad on Public Enemy's Nation of Millions. But Ultra were the first to explore those techniques, even if their noise wasn't as hard-hitting as PE's (especially when mixed with the militant rhetoric of Chuck D).

What I will say about this album is that, with Keith's free-a**ociation rhymes and subliminal disses, this album clearly stands as a blueprint for late 90s underground hip-hop. A lot of the emphasis on lyrical density and stream of consciousness-style rhymes that become de rigueur in the late 90s and early 00s owe a debt to this album.

General Discussion / tik references in local rap songs
« on: August 18, 2009, 03:03:39 PM »
For all the media reporting (and hype) about abuse of the drug tik, I was wondering how many local artists have addressed the issue in their music. I imagine there must be several songs that deal with drug abuse, but I'm wondering about tik specifically.

Anybody?

Just thought of another. I don't think this cat is wack by any means, but I've always struggled with the flow he used on Boxcar Sessions:
