The Lost Tapes - KONFAB by Dplanet::, on Flickr

----------------------------------------

Tale of the Tape

Recovered from the twisted wreckage of charred hard drives, scratched CD-Rs and dusty tape reels, this previously unreleased collection of KONFAB's work has finally emerged to allow you a glimpse into the mind of one of South Africa's most accomplished lyricists.

KONFAB describes himself as an, "anti-establishment, presently disadvantaged, previously dissed and damaged, seriously pissed-off, with anger mismanaged, half-foreign, urbanised darkie."

This eclectic collection spans a number of years and a variety of subject matter. KONFAB is equally comfortable dissecting the politics of post-Apartheid racial inequality, the devastating effects of colonialism or the state of hip hop.

KONFAB's quest is to stretch the barriers of language and syllabic metre to their artistic limits, whilst simultaneously delivering an impa**ioned message, often with a slightly cra** sense of humour.

The soundscape is provided by Dplanet, Hipe, Saturn (Writers Block), Ootz Tha Afronaut, Brand Lelakabe, Mpumito Bomvino and DJ Raiko. There's something for hip hop purists as well as those with more leftfield, electronic sensibilities.

Humour / Jokes / People who ruined the decade - 50 Cent
« on: December 15, 2009, 03:44:10 PM »
50 Cent Bought a lot of ugly houses, killed hip-hop in the process

Good work on destroying hip-hop there, Curtis Jackson. Your relentless – and highly profitable – pursuit of the lowest common denominator has turned what was once actually exciting, a musical form that had wit and imagination and some glorious fire in its belly, into something crushingly, ball-achingly tedious, a tail-chasing, scab-picking parody of itself. I mean, well done on the cash and all that, but couldn't "Fiddy" have done something more interesting with it other than just buy an ugly house, some bullet-proof vests and a bunch of vulgar motors while writing rhymes like, "'Til the sun comes up, every night, we party, yeah we party 'til daylight", or, if you prefer, "I'm in my Lambo maggot, my 4, 4 faggot …" Is that it? Is that all the hip-hop fan deserves? Apparently, yes; yes it is.

spo0ky / Rattex / Nike IAM1 Collaboration

Anne-Sophie Leens aka spo0ky created this set of images to illustrate the concept of Rattex's track, AirMaxin' which was made for the Nike IAM1 campaign. The track is about Rattex's desire to succeed, despite the limiting expectations some township people try to force upon him.

Rattex uses his new Nikes as a metaphor for 'making it' - they are a symbol of success, but also represent the daily hustle to survive and escape the forces that are trying to hold him back.

'Movement' is an essential part of any journey. Anne-Sophie's images show Rattex in series of dynamic situations which are distilled metaphors for overcoming the negative aspects of his environment that are trying to hold him back - there are always obstacles in his path, but by making the right choices with constant purpose, he stay on the right path.

Basic Training Sessions 002

We're taking back the city. Hip Hop like it's supposed to be done.

---------------------------

Pioneer Unit is launching an all-out offensive in the form of a bi-weekly club night to win back the hearts and minds of Capetonians, re-tuning their ears to the best the Cape Town and global hip hop scene has to offer: Basic Training Sessions.

The dance floor will be bumpin' with a diverse selection of the freshest global and local hip hop. The night will be 'curated' and hosted by one of South Africa's most respected hip hop veterans, DJ Raiko. We will have bi-weekly roster of guest DJs, producers and emcees, all carefully selected for their creative and technical skills. Naturally Pioneer Unit will be in full effect with your favourite artists and producers in residence.

What makes Basic Training Sessions unique is the live hip hop elements such as turntablism, live producer beat-making sets, live bands and, of course, emcees. These elements will be seamlessly integrated into a Jamaican-style DJ session to create a non-stop entertainment experience.

---------------------------

Expect to hear:

Raekwon, Rattex, Elzhi, Driemanskap, Gin-i Grindith, Ohmega Watts, Ben Sharpa, Roots Manuva, Black Milk, Jaak, KONFAB, Blu, Jay Dee, Slum Village, J*Davey, Mos Def, MOP, ATCQ, Busta Rhymes, Stacy Epps, Archetypes, Platinum Pied Pipers, Damola, Unspoken Heard, Bilal, Hymphatic Thabs, Pacific Division, Johnson and Johnson, John Robinson, Jazzy Jeff, Exile, Ill Skillz, Stephen Marley, Self Scientific, Sa-Ra Creative Partners, Count Ba** D, MF Doom, Dave Ghetto, De la Soul, Diverse, Dangermouse, J Rawls, Dudley Perkins, Georgia Anne Muldrow, El da Sensei, Emanon, Ghostface, HBMS, Illa J, Ill Poetic, Invincible, Jake One, Jigamastas, Chronic Clan, Kan Kick, Madvillian, Mode9, Zimbabwe Legit, Simba, TOP, Lootpack, Asheru and Blue Black, FiFi, Guilty Simpson, (along with a couple good old cla**ics and much much more).

You'll also experience all that sounds that hip hop has influenced and evolved into: Spaza (Cape Town hip hop), Afrikaans, UK hip hop, trip hop, dancehall, electro, glitch, grime and any hybrid of these genres - the common theme will be keeping the party live on a Friday night.
