I think Senyaka came out the same time as Penny Penny and when Chico started doing
Kwaito. This could've been around 1990-91. I know that M'du and the Tropmies have been around since 1988 as M.M. Deluxe. That was said to be the first Kwaito group.

P.O.C's OUR WORLD (thats credited as SA's 1st hip hop release) came out in 1990? they also formed in 88/89 so if thats the case, then it would come down to the month.... haha

I would like to know though, is there no room in SA hiphop  for the commercial sound to co-exist with the underground? To share stages? Do we feel threatened that they will take over? That sponsors will want to see more of them and less of the music we love?

Thats exactly what i was saying, the first Back to the City was exactly that, the commercial cats were upstaged that day and put alot of things into perspective for me and others, i definitely think the stages can be shared its a barrier that has to be broken.

That was my point i was tryna put across, shit on this tour in europe we've played on the same stages with rock bands, house cats, jiggy dudes even a french folk band! That worked out fine! Obviously hip hop across the board can be on the same stage the heads against xenophobia was another gig where that worked out.

i think if its done more regularly it can build a culture much better than dividing the small fanbase...

Yo don't get me wrong I admire anyone that takes the effort to handle a show that big and make it work out, just don't feel the same about the festival as i used too.

i understand people have to eat I'd be a real dick if i was denying that.
good luck to all involved, think i got misunderstood here, will keep quiet from now on.

Don't feel i need to justify my thoughts to anyone regarding a choice of mine.

BLESS!!

oh see some cats have been added to the lineup. Fair enough..

i was saying that it used to be a free event, a gra**roots vibe, something that made it such a dope event, it brought all types of people. It was a personal statement from me something called an opinion.

I'm not a fan of half of the lineup, another choice that I think I'm entitled to? if I'm not feeling it then whats to say you cant? Who the f*** wants to see Mr Selwyn?
Back to the city was the gig where you'd see the unknown new comers against the big signed cats and it came down to the performance, now it looks like names that can accommodate a crowd willing to spend R50, I wasn't complaining bout spending R50, c'mon now, just feel the underdogs lost another gig to headliners.

With the exception of Kenny and MAL on the dj side the rest all have the same playlist?

I remember Morale getting booed at the first event, from a promotors side why would you even book that cat again, unless "his crowd" will fully pay the R50 you asking?

Just saying, it used to have something which i personally think its lost now. Nothing serious at all, i'm sure it will be a dope day, there's alot more happening and enough good acts to fulfill that besides some weak rappers included.

@ nascent don't take it personal cause you have ties to the gig? Butan still loves you

@ panic i wasn't saying thabs and robo should be on either, although i would've have liked to see Robo on, i think he does his thing and i'm sure the jhb crowd will back me on that?

But having an alternative opinion doesn't count so as you were children,
