Politics / BUDGET SPEECH - MANUEL's DAY
« on: February 21, 2008, 04:04:50 PM »
Trevor ’s Big Day Out
http://www.businessday.co.za/Articles/TarkArticle.aspx?ID=3148642

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
12.14am — Finally got Lesetja off the phone. It’s great he’s so eager but all his moaning about the grammar in my speech is getting me down. I wanted to say “I have done this before, you know” but managed to stop myself.

12.21am — Sudden thought — is this my last budget? That’s what the press keep saying. Do they know something I don’t know? Ag, I’ll think about it later. Although … I do rather like the World Bank; wonder if they got that CV I sent …?

12.43am — Can’t sleep. Bloody Terry Crawford-Browne. That bloody arms deal.

1.34am — Just got kicked out of bed by Maria for tossing and turning too much … I’m heading for the couch; hope the dog will move over.

3.57am — Woke up with a start. Dreamt it was budget day and I’d forgotten to prepare one. Then I thought it must be morning and started cursing Eskom for it being so dark until I realised the light switches were actually working.

3.59am — Speaking of Eskom, I still can’t believe I have to shake up my beautiful budget to save Eskom’s a**. Just the thought of a deficit makes my stomach churn. Bloody Eskom.

6am — Alarm woke me up. As did the dog licking my ear. Must shower.

6.45am — Breakfast with Maria. How come she’s so chirpy? My hands are sweaty and it’s not so easy to eat. Maybe I’ll calm down if I just read the papers.

6.50am — Bloody papers. Now I feel really ill. Half of what they’ve predicted isn’t in the budget. Should it have been? Nah … but will they nail me for leaving out all sorts of issues? Probably. Bloody journalists.

7am — Sweet relief — here comes my car to take me away to the budget lock-up where I get to talk about my favourite things.

7.06am — Drove back to the house — forgot the budget speech.

7.30am — Ha ha — the journalists are looking a bit bedraggled. Probably been up all night drinking. Except for the nerdy ones. The nerdy ones keep flashing their teeth at me and asking complicated questions in the hope that I’ll think they’re clever. Poor sods.

9.32am — Tired. I’m so tired of talking about this damn budget and I haven’t even given the speech yet. I’d go for a walk to clear my head if only the bodyguards would let me out the door.

10.44am — Okay, that’s it. I’m out of here. The nerdy ones look all sad behind their thick spectacles.

11.16am — Just got hold of my budget day gift co-ordinator — you know, the person who has organised the gifts in Parliament like the fruit and the cacti? — and she says they’ve hit a snag and may not be able to deliver today’s surprise gift to the MPs on time. I don’t know what the hell I’m meant to do with that. I can hardly pop down to the closest Woolies and order something stupid like 250 ice-crushers, now can I? Maybe everyone should have just gotten a solar-powered head torch. Or a replica of a little toilet, given the way the markets have been going. Think, Trevor, think.

11.20am — Solved problem by yelling a bit and asking the budget day gift co-ordinator if she knew who I was.

11.45am — Called my Xhosa teacher. I just can’t seem to get my clicks right in the speech this year. It doesn’t help that I’ve got to smile while I click.

12.15pm — Light lunch. Still can’t eat. I really want a whisky but if anyone smells it on my breath there’ll be all sorts of Manto jokes. Bloody Manto.

12.34pm — Maria called. She asked if I’d brushed my hair. What hair? Thinks she’s a comedian on today of all days.

12.56pm — Called Parliament to ask if the back-up generators were in place. Apparently they are, but there’s only enough diesel for 30 minutes. If the lights go out at the beginning, I’m going to have to speed up the speech. Maybe I should get my own head torch. Hmmm.

13.14pm — Set out on foot for my rather heroic-looking entrance into Parliament.

13.16pm — Ran back to the office — forgot the budget speech.

13.33pm — Straightened my tie smugly — it’s a different colour every year so the press can’t use old pictures. Then walked confidently through the cheering crowds. Today, I am The Man. And it feels good.

13.41pm — I was The Man till it hit me that no one was going to like my speech. Except me.

13.55pm — Washed sweaty hands one last time. Must remember to wave them around in there. I have good hands.

14.01pm — Oh lord, here we go.

16.05pm — You know what? I am The Man.

Hot Traxxx / Best of 2007
« on: January 08, 2008, 06:38:29 PM »
I feel 2007 was a good year for hip hop. some really good music came out. Justr to name a few albums I felt
Pharohe Monche - Desire
Talib Kweli - Eardrum
Kanye West - Graduation
Blu & Exile - Below the Heavens
Ca**idy - BARS
Dream Merchant - 9th Wonder

What were your favourite releases for last year.

also dope albums by Sean Price & Wu Tang Clan. Common's album was aight. not the best from Com, but way better than the stuff that is out there right now. 50s album had a few tracks i felt (about 5)

Locally - a whole lot of  albums, mixtapes / compilations were quite dope
Hymphatic Tabs - Age of Horus
Beats against the Beast - I think this came out in 2006, but I only managed to get my hands on in in 2007
Planetary a**ault
Perigo Minas - LandMynz
Morale - The Rising Son Mixtape
Touch is a Move - Beat & pieces
Mawe2 - A Fool's hope

I'll add more later.

General Discussion / SA hip hop money maker
« on: October 15, 2007, 08:10:38 PM »
Who will be the first (or the next) hip hop entrepreneur to make a million or just a killing of local hip hop. A hustler who gets the product of their artsists (or his/her own) to the public and ensures that their market grows and reaches new audiences. Someone with a pa**ion and vision for hip hop. someone who is prepared to take the risk and make things work like the Kwaito Pioneer labels did.

maybe, I should also ask whether it is possible in the next 10-15 years to have a couple of even if it's just 1 mil mainly from hip hop? i have not one research into the profutability of the music industry so I wont use any other numbers as benchmarks for what can be achieved. just a million.

& I'm not saying we should all aspire to make money off hip hop - but for the indutsry to grow, we need entrepreneurs - people who'll take calculated risks and look for a return. otherwise, hip hop will be a small scale thing.

Amu, DPlanet, Cash / the Monopoly, Struggle Entertainment, TBO Touch, the Entity dudes, Slikour, Landmynz, HHP, Moja Pooh Skwatta Kamp, those Cap City dudes - some people here may not even have such ambition - I'm just putting names as they come to mind.

please, lets not turn this into a debate about music preferences or the underground vs commercial - read your history books for that.

If I wanted to give some money to someone who'll make it grow, who would u say I should give it to? sorta like the parable in the Bible.

In case you have not heard, (arguably) the most talented player in SA pa**ed away in car accident this morning. So sad. what a talent! I believe we were still yet to see the best of Gift. Just when he was trying to turn his life around.

RIP.

Humour / Jokes / Hype Unsigned hype
« on: August 10, 2007, 11:21:25 AM »
Yo Mizi,

Why is Cash & the Monopoly not on the Unsigned Top 5. A lot of cats dont like him on AG. I've dissed his crew ffrom time to time. But fact is - the guys have created a buzz, whether it will fizzle out or not remains to be seen. But they have created some Hype. they make commercial music & have lots of radio friendly tracks. They have experience working with labels (cash was part of some wack group called Pyramid right?. I think the group was signed).

More importantly ( & get this people), they are on radio & getting their stuff out there with no help i.e. shooting videos, mixtapes, gear.  +  a Ridiculous work ethic.  In short, they would meet a label halfway.

In short, they are amongst the country's unsigned Hype. Therefore, they should be Hype's top unsigned Hype. Cash shouild just take it easy. Whoever is said to have given Jozi  beatdown should have extended it to the Monopoly. they also have to be asked, "what's with the attitude?". Is that story true by the way? Was Jozi given a beatdown & then asked "what's with the attitude?"

back to Unsigned top 5

by the way I think alot of people have been sleeping on Manelisi. Lyrically, very few can touch him - vernac or English.

I agree with you on DrieManskap though. I think those guys would blow up in a major way especially in townships if a label gave them half the resources they give to Kwaito acts.

Hot Traxxx / BUYING INTERNATIONAL MUSIC
« on: June 27, 2007, 10:33:47 AM »
How many interntional hip hop albums have you bought in the past 2 years or so? i ask this because I stopped buying interntional hip hop a few years ago. I just get bootleggs - from other people or the net. I have not bought more than 2 international hip hop albums in recent years. partly because there is not much worth buying (that i have come across) and because of availability of bootlegs.

This is related to Cash's statement that we dont buy albums by our so called favourite emcees we, just download them.

What is worth buying these days?

Local hip hop is different - my collection is growing I have bought a number of local hip hop albms. some good, some not so good, but i generally dont mind spending R70 or R80 on a SA artist whereas  spending R150 or R200 for international artists is unlikely to happen.

General Discussion / WHAT DO PUBLIC SERVANTS DESERVE?
« on: June 13, 2007, 02:50:25 PM »
No word here on the strike or the pay dispute.

What do people think?. Is govt. being hard headed on offering 6% or 7.5% or are the unions being unrealistic in expecting 12%. Is the 12% / 10% just a negotiating tactic i.e. start with a high offer and gradually work it down and is gvt. Doing the same i.e. starting with a very low offer?

My view is that the majority of civil servants are not underpaid. They should separate nurses, teachers and police officers from the rest of bureaucrats. These 3 categories should be paid more – no, much more. they are so underpaid, yet they perform some of the most important functions in our society. People in all these other gvt. departments have got no reason to demand 12 or 10%.  If you are an official in the department of health, you don’t deserve 12%, a nurse does; if you are an official in the department of safety and security, we don’t give a damn about you, but cops, investigators, sergeants, inspectors, etc deserve much more. & I believe the state can afford to pay more to these three categories. There have been tax overruns year in year out, the economy is growing. We alsmost had a balanced budget this year. The money should be there to pay nurses, teachers and policemen.

Sports Arena / Conspirancy theory - The match was fixed!
« on: April 25, 2007, 10:01:55 PM »
So how much do you think the Proteas were offered to throw away the game? R100 000 each? 200 000? My view ios that a lot more than that  was offered by the bookmakers. SA cricket offered themn something like 2million (entire tema) for a place in the finals. therefore the bookies must have offered a lot of dough.

Maybe I'm trying to find a scapegoat. Anytway, how much do you think the Proteas were offered?
