Hot Traxxx / Tumi & The Volume - new album
« on: January 04, 2006, 08:23:26 PM »
Has anyone listened to the New Tumi & the Volume album?
It's tight - it's just on a different level to most releases in SA across genres - It's been one of my soundtracks for the end of of 2005 & will continue to be a favourite for quite some time.

unlike the previous album, this is not live - it's a studio album. It still rocks.

Favourite tracks. It's got elements of jazz, funk and rock. & of course ill rhymes by sdudla (Tumi)  & as you would expect more hotness can be found in the "music of Nyambo" to quoute Tumi. That afrique beat is so different. Kyla is apparently no longer a member of the Volume but is featured on the album. Pro Kgositsile's popem for the legendary ba**ist John Dyani is also feautured. The lead vocalist form 340ml is also on this one.

What surprises me is that Tumi spits a few lines in vernac. Unexpected.

anyway tight album. Get it.

HYPE magazine hit new sales highs
Marketingweb
01-NOV-05

Hip hop lifestyle magazine HYPE hit an all time high with the Aug/Sept issue selling 90% of its print order – 19 100 copies sold. The bi-monthly magazine, which was launched in June 2004, comes with a hip hop compilation CD. Under a deal signed with Comutanet, some 6 500 copies of the mag are distributed on Gauteng taxis.

Said a**ociate Publisher Natalie Dixon: “HYPE is a huge publishing success for Intelligence -- we saw the gap in the black youth market, capitalised on the world-wide popularity of hip hop and readers have responded in incredible numbers. HYPE is the biggest selling CD-carrying music magazine in the country and we plan to grow that even further in the next half year.”

I'm still baffled by editor's decision to sue Syd Money (who's not my favourite emcee).

So their circulation figures are good.

Rapper goes to war with Pitch Black Afro

You’re a fool in a wig, says star of cellphone ad

ISAAC MAHLANGU

10 July 2005

LUCKY Zulu, the energetic guy in a TV cellphone advert, has become one of South Africa’s meanest rappers.

Zulu, 25, the former Yizo Yizo 3 actor most recognisable as the guy in bright yellow overalls, hat and sneakers who used to be in MTN’s “Ama Ten-Ten specials” ad, is an up-and-coming rapper.

In this role, he is known as Killa G. And like the best international rap stars such as the late 2Pac, Killa G is creating controversy.

Killa G’s track Moegoe, on his debut album, Life is Dead, attacks Pitch Black Afro — alias Thulani Ngcobo, last year’s Metro FM award-winner for Best Hip-Hop Artist.

The track talks about Pitch Black’s teeth, hair and lyrics.

Rapped in various languages including English, Afrikaans, Xhosa, Sotho and Zulu, the song calls Pitch Black Afro a fool, a sissy and “a boy who wears a wig” and says he is “wack” (hip-hop slang for being unskilled and untalented).

The chorus goes: “Hide your kids when you see Pitch Black, Jy is ’n moegoe [stupid person] and u-wack”.

Killa G said he wrote Moegoe in retaliation for Pitch Black’s rap duet with Bravo, Wena Ubani, on the album Skhokho.

Pitch Black says, in Zulu: “Ngizongena rough phezu kwakho ngibe wu-Ten-Ten”, which translates as: “I am going to get on top of you roughly and become Ten-Ten.”

Zulu claims “Ten-Ten” refers to him. He says people asked what he was going to do about it, so he decided to write a song and hit back.

However, Pitch Black, who lives in Orlando, Soweto, denied the verse was about Zulu.

“In Orlando, Ten-Ten refers to many things, such as the last train to the township, a well-known soccer player and a local hawker,” he said.

Pitch Black said he was being poetic with the verse, which people from his surroundings can relate to.

He said Zulu should have tried to understand what he meant.

“I am not going to entertain people like him. In English they say ‘never argue with a fool because people might not notice the difference’,” Pitch Black said.

Zulu said he had been involved in a freestyling lyrical battle with Pitch Black in a street in Yeoville about two years ago.

“I think that’s where the whole thing started,” Zulu said.

However, Pitch Black Afro said he did not remember ever taking part in a freestyling battle with Zulu.

Thato “DJ Fresh” Sikwane, who first played Killa G’s song on his Yfm breakfast show a month ago, said the track was “violently angry”.

He said he did not have a problem with local rappers dissing each other in songs but they “don’t have to be personal and malicious”.
