General Discussion / 10 years After Motherload!
« on: April 22, 2005, 11:34:42 AM »
I also still have my copy. I still listen to tracks like the virgin by metamoforces & the mic device & that Shorty Skills & loko track.

things have changed since Motherload. Did you ever think loko would be part of a kwaito group? did you ever think there would be so many local releases...maybe but not @ that time. Shorty skills now doing something with BMP.

Whoever tries to define hip hop is wasting their time. It changes @ such a rapid pace that tunnel-vision people get left behind quickly.

i dont you think another mothaload is possible - Amu & Snazz working on one project after that fiasco? I also dont think it's necessary because so much has changed. the Amus must be preparing to pa** the baton to people who'll take it to a higher level.  It played a big role in advancing SA hip hop - no doubt about that.

But, coming to my initial question, what can we do bout this lack of back-announcing?It really bites man

Just to let you know that it could be done purposefully. You might know that Metro has this thing called "MY BEAT" where you are supposed to send an SMS to a certain number if you want to get the details of a song you don't know (the advert is done by Wilson Nkosi). Obviously the SMS wioll cost you money & increase their revenues. This service would be useless if they announced the song all the time. @ the end of the day it's all about the Mboweni's. Metro is a ceommercial station and wants to make money from services like these. Stupid if you ask me.

Whats up with the 7:00 evening slot, god awful waste of time really

That's  theGiven Mkhari show. One of the shows I listen to on Metro. very informative, controversial @ times and fun @ times. Only Mkhari & the Jazz programme on Sundays hosted by Brenda Sisani are worth listening to. The rest are just similar to any slots on other commercial & PBS radio stations. Same music, over and over again. Ofeten talking about the same things, trying too hard to sound funny.Boring clones.

YEAH MAN PABI ROCKS

I guess it's different strokes for different folks coz I can't stand Pabi. I stopped listening to that station in the morning a while ago. in my opinion she tries too hard to entertain & be humorous. She ends up sounding like an excited 13 year old.

Remember Omen & SpikeD(think that was the name of his sidekick) back in those days?
Remember two guys rapping in vernac who later did a song called Mama wami with Oscar? Pity they never released their own album.
Mizchief was hot those days - used to have a slot on that show. Around 1998 & 1999. Good ol' days.
There were too manyt crews from Tembisa & they had a good reputation.

There was that funny jingle about the show done by a certain magogo"lento eniyivotelayo ngumbhedo"

So Selwyn won?Thats a surprise, really it is cause I dont recall him having a strong single on radio at all as yet.I know Skwatta made noise and Zubz too

Since when has radio airplay become a yardstick to judge artists? If that was the case Pitch Black, Skwtta &  Kwaito artsists would get everything.   Some of my & your favourite artists are not getting any airplay. Dont forget that some music genres get very little airplay. if we considered airplay where would that leave Jazz musicians who are so creative & original yt dont make raido playlists (Zim Ngqawana, Philip Tabane, etc)

I was also hoping Zubz would take the award simply because he had the best album among those nominees. That’s my opinion – guess that’s what it boils down to @ the end of the day. It’s a subjective thing, unless they  had a clear criteria (e.g sales)

I would love to know who were the judges for that & other categories. 340ml was not even nominated, @ least Simphiwe Dana & Thandiswa deservedly  won.

Besides Zubz, I also feel sorry for MXO & Freshylground who were nominated in few categories but did not pick up any award.

Don't worry Rush, I'll upload track for you to hear. I just can't decide which is his best track - TOFOTOFO (the title should tell you something) or PITCH BLACK AFRO (lez'ezama koporosho). hope people can help me in deciding. (joking)
