General Discussion / Word(s) of the Day
« on: February 07, 2008, 04:01:34 PM »
Lets keep it growing as it seems the language is shape-shifting....

ACB

Mnemonic device for "Air Conditioner Booty": a woman whose buttocks, when viewed from the side, resemble a wall-unit air conditioner protruding from a house.

Holly's ACB was knocking peoples' drinks off the table last night.

choreplay

When a woman is turned on by the sight of her husband/boyfriend/partner doing regular household chores, that she would normally be doing.

"Last night, it was all about choreplay. I was all 'OH YEAH, fold that laundry. Oh yes, just like that! In half and, then in half again. OHHH'"

box lock

The female equivalent of a cock block.

I was hitting on that guy, but my girlfriend stepped in and totally box locked me.

General Discussion / G unit clothing shuts down
« on: February 07, 2008, 03:55:37 PM »
http://blog.drjays.com/index.php/2008/02/06/breaking-news-50-cents-g-unit-clothing-shuts-down/

The Dr. Jay’s Blog is reporting that Curtis’ G-Unit Clothing company has folded. I guess the market for poorly desgined and constructed knock offs of Ecko gear had to dry up eventually. While I sympathize with anybody over there who may have lost a job, I have to applaud the shrewd businessman who finally put the nail in this horrible clothing line’s coffin. I wonder whose going to step in and fill the void? Somebody has to outfit those throngs of cornball wiggers with carpenter jeans.

(c) Eskay

Wow .. who woulda thought. Thought Fif was caking off this.. I heard some dude say apparently a lotta homeless people in the US rock this gear.. I wonder what truth there is to that.. ???

General Discussion / Tonight
« on: February 06, 2008, 03:26:27 PM »
I dont know if any of you have seen the Tonight section of The Star newspaper today. There's an article in there about up-and-coming artists. Hip-hop is represented...

J.R.

When the intrepid Tonight team were researching this story, one name came up over and over again - J.R. No not Southfork. Motswako. He is the bright young thing that everyone is talking about and listening to his hip hop album called The Main Event, we can see why. He is intelligent, articulate and witty without the arrogance of youth. "I fuse seSotho and seTswana because those are the languages I best explain myself," says the 21 year old rapper. "It's a good thing to express yourself in the way you feel best." He describes his music as "music for the hardworker." His album is set for release through Electromode in April.

Cook

His mother is South African. His father is American. He grew up in DC, Washington DC and he really, really does talk like an American rapper. One has to permanently be alert when he speaks because, like his African American brothers, he changes the meanings of words in the English language. Cook says he loves living in South Africa and he has just recorded with crunkmeister, Bongani Fa**ie so the album is cooking. A New Chef in Town comes out in early April and will set the hip hop world on fire.

Maggs

Now this rapper has been working on this album for a rather long time. He employed the services of one of the Tonight's favourite producers Kaybee. The album is all in English and has some dark moments as well as some sharp wit. Who knows when it will be released or what the album will be called. But all we do know is that when this former hype man of PRO does finally release (through Ghetto Ruff) there are gonna be many happy hip hop heads.

Havent heard of Cook or J.R... but the article bigs-em-up.. So I suppose they must be decent. There was a mention of Jozi as last years winners. They are described as 'South Africas biggest boy band since Rabbit'.. It also went on to say they've been nominated for Best Group in Africa and will be performing in Lagos next month.. The article also added that 'baggy pants teenagers' should be happy with their pop sound.

Producers - Discussion / Teddy Riley's studio for sale
« on: February 06, 2008, 10:41:14 AM »
Teddy Riley’s studio is for sale and he’s having financial woes:

At one time, Teddy Riley was the reigning king of R&B and hip-hop. Now he’s just another fallen star who owes $1 million. In a courtroom Friday, two lawyers agreed to seek a buyer for Riley’s recording studio in Thalia, VA. Music history was made there. In the 1990s, Riley produced hit songs in the studio for the likes of Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, Heavy D, as well as his own group, BLACKstreet. It was a brand-new, state-of-the-art $3 million studio when it opened in 1991.

Riley has been dogged by debts and legal problems for years. In 2002, Riley filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. He emerged from bankruptcy a year later, but that didn’t stop his money troubles. In 2004, the Internal Revenue Service filed a $1 million lien against Riley for unpaid income taxes. In 2006, Riley was forced to sell his house in the ritzy Church Point neighborhood for $1.5 million to pay off federal and city taxes, as well as the home’s mortgage. Last year, the IRS filed another tax lien against Riley for $196,747. And just last month, the state filed a $93,684 income tax lien against Riley. The studio, too, is mired in debt. In 2005, Riley borrowed $700,000 against the studio from a local lender, Equitable Relocation Services Inc. Riley defaulted on that loan, and the lender won a $700,000 judgment against him in 2006.

smh... the IRS dont phuck around...

General Discussion / Bill Cosby to drop hip-hop album
« on: February 01, 2008, 11:17:53 AM »
Bill Cosby is coming out with a Hip Hop album called State of Emergency. The album will cover issues such as teen pregnancy, crime, drug abuse in parenting. Here is an excerpt on parenting from one of Bill’s books that was published last year:

On criticism:
“Certain people tell us that we are picking on the poor. Many of those who accuse us are scholars and intellectuals, upset that we are not blaming everything on white people as they do. Well, only blaming the system keeps certain black people in the limelight but it also keeps the black poor wallowing in victimhood.”

On raising children:
“All black parents can do right by their children, and all black children can succeed. There is no reason why not.”

“Use standard English when you have your kids together, not Black English. They’ll hear enough of that in the streets…Watch the movie My Fair Lady. All cultures discriminate against people who have not mastered the standard language, and when race is involved, it is all that much harder for a nonstandard speaker to feel competent or even at home in the culture.”

On the media:
“Some of the most negative images of African Americans on TV and in the movies seem to be the most popular among young people—black and white. With both good and bad media out there, you have to help select media for kids that will support their successes and suppress their urge to give up or drop out.”

On black men:
“Gangsta rap makes our young people tough, but not so tough they can walk through prison walls. It can jazz them about sex, but it can’t begin to make them a good father. No matter how often, or how publicly they grab their crotches, crotch-grabbing isn’t even going to get them a bus ride downtown.”

Gotta say.. doctor Huxtable's always been a voiciferous critic of the lower values that hip-hop youngsters.. (Hipsters?) place upon themselves...

General Discussion / Swagger
« on: January 11, 2008, 12:59:52 PM »
I was thinkin about something this morning. About all to do with swagger and what it involves. What it represents. I got to thinking that... I need a way to evaluate or quantify this swagger thing. Some dictonary I checked defined it as confidence (in appearance), the way you walk, arrogance and even the word 'cocky' was put in there. NH obviously...
So I started wondering... How do we measure the level of swagger...? Are there even levels of swagger...? Or is it one of those 'either you have it or you dont things'... Is it possible to be broke and still have swagger? Things like that...

Lets say for instance I see someone draped out in like 5 gold chains that amoount to... lets say R10 000... Then I see someone else with maybe like 1 chain.. but its a diamond chain and it costs the same amount.... who has more swagger?

General Discussion / Wu-Tang Allows Fans to Help Plan Tour
« on: December 21, 2007, 12:50:21 PM »
Saw this yesterday at xxlmag.

If you’d like to see the Wu-Tang Clan perform in your city, now is your chance. The Staten Island collective are teaming up with the event planning website eventful.com for the Wu-Tang 8 Diagrams Tour competition. The site provides a service called Eventful Demand that allows fans in a given city to create a campaign urging a particular artist or performer to schedule a local show. By visiting the site and making a ‘Demand,’ individuals can personally influence an artist’s tour. Wu has promised to visit any city that logs over 1,500 ‘Demands’ through the site. “The Wu is back together, live and direct. All our fans have shown us mad love over the years, and we want to rock the cities that demand us the most. Much thanks to Eventful for letting us reconnect with our fans,” the crew said in a statement. The competition kicked off on Wednesday, December 19 and will run through Friday, February 1.

Is it even worth the effort? Would the mighty Wu consider dropping by J-Sect...? Or Kakstraat for that matter?

« on: November 30, 2007, 03:35:51 PM »
Every now and again we all fall for a rap artist that we know is ignant as phuck.. but somehow we just can't bring ourselves to dislike this person (none). Up until now for me Sean Price has held that title. Not ignant in the sense of stoopid.. but ignant like 'I cant beleive he just said that'... Well my peoples.. a new contenter has stood up to be counted. His name... Mr Cam'ron Giles... I started bumpin the Public enemy mixtape yesterday... and guess what... I cant stop... with lines like:

'F*ck work, 'cos I'm like Biggie Smalls... EYE LAZY'....

'I walk into Niketown... and tell 'em... wipe me down!!'...

and something along the lines of:
"you talking Bull, how we different
you overlook Scottie Pippen..
seems like all we care about is a Mike"...

Gotta love this guy.. I guess its a hot summer after all innit? LMAO!!
