WEB INSULTS COULD BE COSTLY

Fort Lauderdale, Florida - A children's services referral provider was awarded $11.3m in damages from a mother who posted critical internet messages after seeking her advice.

The defendant, Carey Bock, called Sue Scheff a "con artist", "crook" and "fraud" in messages posted on a site used by parents with troubled children at boarding schools.

The award for Scheff, founder of Parents Universal Resource Experts Inc, is among the largest for a lawsuit claiming internet defamation, according to legal analysts and an attorney involved in the case.

A judge ruled in Scheff's favour after Bock did not show up for the trial. The jury then decided the damage amount.

The dispute arose after Bock sought help withdrawing her sons from a school in Costa Rica. Scheff said she referred Bock to a consultant, and the two disagreed over access to information.

Later Bock posted the negative messages about Scheff on an internet site used by parents with troubled children at boarding schools.

The lawsuit was filed in 2003. Scheff won the $11.3m judgment, which includes $5m in punitive damages, from a Broward County jury.

Scheff attorney David H Pollack said on Wednesday that the award "signals that there is a limit" to the material that can be used on the internet.

"You can't just destroy somebody's life, destroy somebody's reputation and make blatant false statements about somebody and have there be no consequence," Pollack said. "There has to be a consequence."

It is unclear if Scheff, who lives in suburban Fort Lauderdale, will collect any money.

Bock, of Mandeville, Louisiana, told USA Today she did not have the money to pay the award or appeal it.

She relocated temporarily after Hurricane Katrina flooded her home last year, and she said she was not aware of the trial date after returning home over the summer.

Hi AG ma**ive. In the spirit of Girl Advice, shall we proceed for the laydees, and others batting for our team, in a similar fashion?

on a sidebar tip... let me say first off that I am no braburner and detest feminist thinking... but I could not help but be take offence (or should I just say I was plain hurt) as a lady this weekend when I was chilling with a bunch of cats and it was all good. so a homie of theirs comes through that I do not know well. he proceeds to give each a heartfelt greeting sharing jokes along the way, its all love. when he gets to me, he reaches out, then quickly retracts his hand and says, ja I'll just greet the cats cus "yibo abazobe bebambe i galav mase ng'bodile"

and totally unrelated to this...WHY ARE BOYS OFFENSIVE, ...oh well my experience is that they generally aim to offend? what are the merits of this. what are the usual reactions and desired effects? does this method ellicit these usually?I have toyed with being offensive- and would like to venture further into this method of acquiring, buth thought I should consult the keepers of the offensive scroll...Child, Deac, Brick? any pointers?

was checking out Black Jacks- an all black ska band. though i'm not crazy about the vocals (sounds too real), the instrumentals are grimey sick. they ok the band I guess.got me thinking who has killed it on guitar in the 20th and 21st centuries?
