Monday Feb 6th was set to be a night to remember: Wyclef Jean, Lauryn Hill and Pras collectively known as the Fugees kicked off the Grammys with a free block party on the corner of Hollywood and Vine, which is ground zero for Hollywood's bustling club scene.
Several thousand people showed up for this event eagerly anticipating a return to a quality and style of Hip Hop that for many has long been missing. The return of the Fugees also underscored a feeling of hope. A lot of people were hoping that this incredibly popular group could show and prove that no matter how bad things get, you can reconcile your differences and work things out. They symbolized the hope that many had, in the sense that by returning to the scene in the age of 'Laffy Taffy' type songs that they would raise the bar as to what should be expected from a rap act when they put out material as well as perform.
The Fugees let us know that you can be politically astute, culturally relevant, intelligent and still be seen as dope emcees who draw large crowds. For a lot of women, Lauryn Hill represented that spark and was living proof that one did not have to go on stage and take off their clothes or rap about explicit sex in order to be considered hot.
So, it was with all this in the background, that thousands of us waited for The Fugees to take the stage and wreck shop. Unfortunately, before they took the stage the crowd had to endure what seemed like an endless performance from an up and coming, non-descript opening R&B act who frequently reminded the Cali audience that they were from the Bronx. At first people were cool when they rocked their first couple of songs. That's pretty standard when you’re a new group. Drop two or three songs and then bounce. This group didn't do that. They went on and on and on. They had to have done at least 10 songs which caused an increasingly restless crowd to start chanting 'Fugees! Fugees! Sad part is, when they finally got off the stage to thunderous applause, I'm not sure if they realized that folks were cheering so hard cause they finally finished not because they were being felt.
When the up and coming group left, the Fugees deejay hit the stage and started dropping some West Coast gems that got the crowd hyped. Between each West Coast cla**ic he would play the hook from Notorious BIG's cut 'Going back to Cali'. The crowd loved it.
About 10 minutes later the deejay drops the instrumental to the Dre produced cut 'Deep Cover' as Wyclef sporting a fedora hat and a pink shirt hits the stage and the crowd completely erupts. Wyclef waste no time taking it up a notch by kicking this incredible freestyle where he paid homage to Crip Co-founder Stanley 'Tookie' Williams who was recently executed thanks to the callousness and political ambitions of our wack a** governor Arnold Schwarzanegger. He also referred to George Bush as a penguin and kept going back to that line thus making it a hook in his freestyle. People were loving it.. Then Wyclef flipped the scripted and started busting his freestyle in Spanish and all the Latinos in the audience went crazy. He came back and left everyone speechless as he flipped some rhymes in French.
Mind you this is going on for a good 15 minutes. The crowd is frenzied and Lauryn and Pras haven't even hit the stage. Then the deejay who by now is playing along with the live band drops the Hip Hop cla**ic 'Jump Around' by House of Pain and Lauryn Hill sporting a huge Angela Davis type afro hits the stage and the crowd goes even crazier. Like Wyclef she too is ripping freestyles and reminding everybody watching and listening that she hasn't missed a step when it comes to rocking the mic.
Pras hits the stage was Lauryn is rocking. The crowd shows him love, as he spits a couple of lines but for the most part he lays back and punctuates the end of each line kicked by Lauryn and Wyclef. Pras who is sporting a pink blazer seems to closely be watching Wyclef as if to follow his lead.
By the time Lauryn finishes kicking her freestyle we are 20-25 minutes into the show, the crowd is going bananas and we haven't even heard a Fugee song yet... The three take a brief pause and introduce themselves to the crowd as Wyclef steps up and tells the audience that he's a dope emcee and that back in the days he had to crush cats that stepped to him. He told the audience that if anybody tried battling him or the rest of the Fugees they wound up having to call an ambulance. At that moment the band kicks in the beat to 'How Many MC’s. They follow that up with 'Refugees on the Mic' with Pras kicking a reggae version of the song...
They followed that joint with "Fu-Gee-La and then their new joint 'Take It Easy'. Mid-way through the song they dropped the beat to Dr Dre's 'Xplosive' and stared rhyming over that. The crowd was definitely into it...

I mean, when he did kick a couple of lines people showed him mad love, but it seemed like Wyclef was dominating the mic. Lauryn got the crowd extra hype when she kicked her verses and Wyclef ended the song by chanting 'George Bush Needs to ‘Take it Easy'.
Now keep in mind while all this is going on, the crowd is hyped. After all, the Fugees kept coming with hit after hit, but there was something uneasy about the performance. I've seen these guys in their hey day and they were a lot tighter. Their movements were seamless and most importantly they seemed to genuinely care and were supportive of one another. Last night on Hollywood and Vine I saw three mega superstars who don't really seem to like each other. For all the dope lyrics and great showmanship they put forth, that aspect was more than just glaring. It was damn near blinding.
First thing you noticed was there was very little interplay between the three. I think during the entire show Pras and Wyclef had some sort of exchange and to be honest it was hard to tell if it was staged or real. For example, early on in the show, it was painfully obvious that Pras was not getting any shine. It wouldn't have been so noticeable, but here he was on stage holding a mic constantly looking at Wyclef as to find out when he should rhyme or not rhyme. At one point, Wyclef stopped the music and said something like: 'Yo Pras are you not feeling what I'm doing'? Pras responded back: 'No, I'm not'. There's this tension in the air and then the beat changes and Pras starts rapping over a reggae beat for the song 'Refugees on the Mic'.
During the second part of the show, an unsmiling Pras is seen standing next to the deejay. Again Wyclef stops the music and asks what’s up. The moment seemed tense as Pras used the occasion to jump into his only other solo performance of the night 'Ghetto Superstar'.
Now, generally speaking, no one would read into these bits and see if there was any tension, but because that was one of the few interactions the group members had with each other it seemed odd, awkward and out of place.
The interplay between Lauryn and Wyclef was completely absent. At times it was like watching two different concerts. Wyclef would do a song and Lauryn would walk off stage. Lauryn would do a song and Wyclef would disappear. Neither one would step back and proudly show off the skill set and musical prowess of the other. During their big songs they'd be on stage together, but they hardly looked at each other.
There were only two or three exchanges between Wyclef and Lauryn and both were undeniably tension filled. The first came when Lauryn and Wyclef faced each other as Lauryn started rocking her song 'Lost Ones'. The song which was on her solo album 'The Mis-Education of Lauryn Hill was said to be about her stepping away from the group so needless to say one could understand that performing it could be a bit prickly. She killed this song especially when she took Lil Kim's beat for the song 'Lighters Up' and rapped over it-and to be honest she sounded better then Lil Kim. later on in the show she took the beat to Amerie's 'One Thing' and flipped that better than Amerie. But back to Lost Ones. Now Lauryn leads into the song by going to the front of the stage and making some remarks about how she was not crazy. She said a lot of people feel that because she is smart and cannot be brought or bribed that she gets maligned. It was at that point, that Lauryn launches into the song, she's facing Wyclef as she kicks her first couple of lines and then she pushes him away. Yes, it was staged, but it was uncomfortable for all to watch.
Later on in the show, Wyclef does a song off the Carnival album. He sets it up by telling the audience that the Fugees always speak the truth and that he's gonna be honest and tell them his real age, which is 36. He then tells the crowd that if he can run around the stage and get busy at 36 the audience can be just as hyped. Now, as he is saying all this, Lauryn, as usual, is nowhere to be seen on the stage, but this time we hear her cracking some jokes. She says Wyclef is lying; he's actually 46 or maybe even 66. That was the last interplay of the night between the pair.
It was more then obvious that something was wrong when Wyclef did the love song 'Call 9-1-1' which he originally recorded with Mary J Blige. One just knew that Lauryn with her angelic voice would step in and do Mary's part. All we saw was Wyclef and his three female back up singers. Lauryn stayed off the stage.
As hyped as the crowd was over seeing the The Fugees, there were many who wished that the three of them could really come together and solve their underlying issues. When you consider how well a show the Fugees did with all that tension, one can only imagine how it would be if they genuinely liked and trusted one another.
As the show ended, I later learned what was part of the tension. According to sources backstage, Lauryn was late and at one point was threatening not to go on at all. The reason why the opening act wound up doing 10 songs was because Lauryn was still at her hotel room deciding whether or not she should perform. When Wyclef took the stage, he came out solo because Lauryn had not yet come to the venue. I also came to understand that there were some words exchanged between their respective managers.
At the end of the day we have to give the Fugees props for doing a great show. Each of the members including Pras can hold court by themselves. All three are talented -there's no denying that. But what we are ultimately looking for is for the Fugees to be so much more. We want them to be dope on skill side. But also want their politics and positive lyrics to be matched with love and trust for one another. For those who have a lot much is expected.
