So my little brother makes me watch a video of Tumi (of the Volume) performing a song on what I a**ume is a street in France, outside what looks like a subway exit. In the hook Tumi says "it's like a Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde". So I ask my little brother what he thinks that's in reference to. Turns out he doesn't know who The Pharcyde are. Not surprised - he's only 18. So I find a video for Runnin. Then remember the awesomeness that is the video for Drop and play that for him.
He notices the "weird" things happening in the video and keeps saying "what the hell?!". I ask him how he thinks it was put together. Dude is clueless. The look on his face when I played him a making-the-video" insert? Priceless.
Reminded me of that 9th Wonder doccie - The Hip Hop Fellow - and how following the samples in current music to the source can result in awesome discoveries. Not only did my brother get to see a cla**ic but forgotten hip hop music video, but now he also wants to hear what Pharcyde's all about. And now I've found myself going wild, having found "Once Upon A Time" by Chinese Man featuring Tumi. The rabbit hole has lots to offer. And this is why using other people's lines selectively and creatively/referencing other people's songs is a great thing.

Same goes for books actually. Buying a hard copy should give you access to download it onto a reader, or to the audio version. At the end of the day it's the same product in different packaging.
