Copied N Pasted-------------------------------

In the article “Cultural warriors are not rational” (City Press 2 August 2009), Andile Mngxitama seems to be disgusted by the “slave mentality” that induces Africans to “kill young men in the name of a mythical and idiotic thing called manhood”. He suspects “this madness is a result of spiritual and material dispossession” that resulted in our “backwardness, fear, superstition and irrationality”

A belief system as an aspect of culture is a subject that has over time intrigued anthropologists. It is simply repeated, learned and acquired behaviour that sometimes consolidates into rituals. These rituals need not be “rational” or scientific. Nor do they have to be “proven” in newspaper columns or academic platforms for them to be accepted. Those who may have an affinity to impose Karl Marx’s statements where they least apply may be interested to find out why Marx never cut his beard in the first place.

Belief systems are critically important for group affiliation, social acceptance and self-affirmation. The rejection and social sanction against those who despise our way of life is what sometimes compels inkwenkwe to join his peers entabeni against the wish and readiness of his parents.

All societies have their share of “irrationality and idiocy”. There is for instance nothing “rational” in shaking hands; covering your body for decency and walk naked in the beach among the same people; shaving your head and beard hoping to be handsome. But no matter how idiotic it sounds, no American male candidate would win a presidential election with a face hidden under a forest of hair and beard. It makes me wonder if it is the same concept of rationality that makes Mngxitama not to wear skirts.

Granted, some aspects of cultural practice could be dangerous. Yet the beauty of culture may be located in that very same quality. Europeans spend valuable time fighting and sometimes killing or getting killed by bulls. I have yet to hear someone screaming about the idiocy and cruelty caused to animals by this culture.

Car racing, rugby or boxing are all “dangerous” and perhaps “idiotic” sports. But “rational” people call not for their abolition but regulation. By the same token, stringent regulation and control of ulwaluko must be imposed to curb the deaths that have the effect of drowning the social importance of the practice. Amakhwenkwe are never meant to be killed at the mountain – ayadlangwa. If we were to heed the socially reckless call to abolish ulwaluko because of the “neglect and incompetence” visiting the practice, there would be no public hospitals today.

The cut is a small aspect of ulwaluko. It is a powerful institution where you learn the values of ubuntu. That is also where the writer learned to be an African and umJwarha. I came to appreciate the knowledge of science by the indigenous people. Umkhwetha smears lime (calcium carbonate) all over his body. This substance has anti-perspirant and anti-deodorant properties, which account for why umkhwetha does not have a foul smell despite not washing for months. It also serves as a sunscreen.

I doubt if anybody could be proud of ridiculing Africans for lack of originality by wearing “Czechoslovakian beads” and eating “Latin American maize” as though there is nothing African these nations are using. They are using our mathematical formulas, singing our jazz and eating our meat. They are still colonising our artifacts in their museums. Be that as it might, we traded with other nations on equal par long before Christ was born. We were not done any favours.

Sadly, Africans are often the first to attack their own value systems in such exaggerated viciousness as would make Verwoerd turn green with envy in his grave. We are the first to distort and attack ilobola as reducing women to commodities when it has nothing of the sort in its undiluted version. We are so obsessed with departing from ourselves that we even walk, talk, laugh and eat in the manner and style of other people. Talk about slave mentality"

After reading the highlighted part i immediately lost interest in the rest of the article..

Just one question thou.. U Andile lo yikwekwe na? Kauz if he a man, why is he saying this shit(he bein a hypocrite)... And if uyikwekwe, what the f*** does he know?

@ RR, good that you have made the decision to go my man, a dude i know who was also on the same mental as you wanted to get married and in his case he was a person in the public eye and so most people knew about him not wanting to get circumcised... come the time for lobola negotiations the girls family tells him and his entourage "ayikho into esizoyi thetha nenkwenkwe"... so my man if you trying to get married to xhosa chick best get your story on point

well, with the world blessed with so many beautiful women from different walks of life and religions why would I limit myself to Xhosa women :)

I've always known this my brother.
naboke ubukwenkwe buzi veza, if you read my post carefully it says "if you are trying to get married to a xhosa chick"

dude you know how it easy it is to have a xhosa man catch feelings if i dared insult his manhood. i'd say just be careful there, don't be reckless with your words. i'll let this one pa** since you're not waylander. plus its not in me to have an argument over such childish comments.

Hey voetsek kwedini!! zuphinde uthethe nam xa ubomvu qha ngoku... andithethi namakhwenkwe xa kusiyiwa kwi festive..its part of my detox plan...

All points taken....

If a dude is "productive" when he's had a few drinks or a coupla blunts, and isnt when sober, at which is he then? kauz i know a few...

And i hear the point about doing this shit in tertiary etc, but isnt that where the addiction starts for most people? Also, at which age do you start outgrowing that shit? kauz most of the people who led me to start this thread are in their late 20's to mid 30's.. and theres a good sprinkling of late 30's as well...

If you can drink on a daily and still be productiv, isnt the problem the fact that you have to drink daily?

What gives...

First of all, i drink alcohol, and i smoke cigarrettes.. I only drink on Fridays and Saturdays.. Sundays i rest, and during the week its work, school, business and gym..

I have noticed a negative trend amongst us as youth, and more specifically black youth, of leading very destructive lifestyles.. And its a very concerning for me... Addictive substances seem to be a norm amongst us..

i have two friends, one a very intelligent dude, who share a flat, and on average they ma**acre at least a tray of black label dumpies a day.. thats 24 dumpies of beer, everyday... The one dude only comes out of his shell after a few.. he is quiet, to the point of being unnoticable when he is sober, but when he's had a few, YHO!!!

Luckily, friends like that are at a minimum for me, im lucky enough to be blessed with focused , driven people as friends..

What inspired this thread for me though was not my friends as such, but the lifestyles lead by youth in general...
How many of you here drink on a daily basis? babalas monday?something something tuesday? ladies night wednesday? phuza thursday? and of course, the normal resumption of service friday and saturday!!! and theres a something something on sundays as well...

Then, theres also the small issue of drug use(abuse??)... Weed smoking, cocaine, acid etc.. how many of you get blunted daily? and how many of u use so called hard-drugs on weekends?

and just as a side debate, how is Cannibis good for a person? How many people do you know who are perpetually high on some drug or another?

Now my question  is, why are we so addicted to these destructive lifestyles? Black people in general seem to live for drugs and alcohol..

And theres also the small issue of sex... im not talking abt having it, im talking about the people who still have it without using protection!! i know this might amaze some of you, and embara** most, but its actually amazing the number of young, professional and mostly educated people who STILL dont use condoms, or who use them SOMETIMES(like they can see how got deases and shit by just lookin at them).. and generally, the ones who use condoms sometimes dont use them when they with hot, "clean looking" girls, or girls they meet at these up-market do's.. like girls who drive dope cars and wear expensive clothes are somehow immune to this shit...

anyway, im hoping to start a debate by this post, so comment away...

Safe...

I respect your hustle Waylander.
You seem to have a focus, what's your ultimate goal? What drives you when you wake up in the morning?

As for me, money doesn't drive me, even though my job practically safe-guards capitalism.
But, I mean, we all like to have nice things so I can meet you halfway.

I'm surprised you think the site is 'teeming with pseudo-intellectuals'. I always find the views vary to an interesting degree. Quite a few devil's advocates, afrocentrics and apologists. And a few posts to remind everyone not to take everything so seriously.

As for Gareth Cliff's letter, I did nod here and there, but nothing was new really, that's why I didn't comment before. Very few people would disagree that the government is corrupt. I was more interested in what motivated him to write it and whether it was really in the spirit of building the country. Also, I'm still sensitive to wording, perspective and tone used by white people in their criticism of black people, call it a nervous tick *shrug*

coolness.

My beef is that some people are dismissing the letter simply because it was written by a white person..
not because it doesnt make sense, or is a lie etc, but simply because it was written by a white guy..

As for it not saying nothing new, i agree, but that on its own does not make it irrelevant.. Gareth cliff is a radio personality, and has a wider and bigger reach than the average guy, and he has more clout(as far as listenability is concerned)than some politicians even..
Generally, when a politician speaks, you wouldnt think twice about flippin channels, but you wouldnt reali flip a channel because gareth cliff is being interviewed..
The stir this letter has caused is a perfect example of the clout and reach dude has...

As for his motivation, only he would know.. im not sure about this, but if he is speaking the truth, do his reason matter? i mean, when Helen Zille or Mbazima Shilowa speak truth, do you stop to think whether they are saying what they saying kauz its true, or kauz they tryin to get votes?
when a ref gives chiefs a penalty, do you focus on whether a foul actually ocurred and whether its deserving of a penalty or on whether they guy hates the team chiefs is playing against?

And i respect how sensitive you still are towards what white people say and how they say it, but my point is, when they do talk, what they say shouldnt be just dismissed because of their skin colour.. Keep in mind, that behaviour makes us just like them during the arpatheid era, it means we are employing reverse racism, which basically makes everything they did to us acceptable because we are now just as guilty...

As for this AG being full of pseudo-intellectuals, i think thats a fact.. Some big-worded views expressed on some threads are utterly stupid once you strip away all the beautiful colors they are covered with.
and i understand that this site is full of jokers, apologists and such, as you stated, but some things just get me going.. but ke, i do apologise for getting all emo on ya'll!!!

As what drives me and my ultimate goals, simple: MONEY MONEY MONEY!!!!

Thats the reason i went to school, got a job, started my businesses.. 95% of the decisions i make are motivated by gwop..
Money is 95% hapiness.. simple... everything thing that makes you happy except love(in some cases) requires money.. so its a simple equation NEEDS/WANTS + MONEY = HAPINESSES!!
and the more you have, the happier you are.. the only people who are happy without money are people who've never had it, so its value means nothing to them...

Condescending tone aside, there is a lot of truth in that letter.

just a shame that it is overshadowed by the few stupid statements.

cosig!!

Fully agree with this.. you know, ive noticed a disturbing trends amongst darkies... and that is, a white person can criticise the guv'ment, and make very valid points whilst doing it, and everything he/she says will be dismissed because it was said a white person... and the only grounds used for dismissing that criticism would be that the white criticiser is, well, white...

To me, thats stupidity, and its a weapon that our leaders are using effectively to run-away from answering to what ppl think of them...
The ANC rarely criticises its own, so its mostly left to the opposition to do that, and unfortunately for us, the opposition is mostly white.. and so the cycle begins..

If Helen Zille says something thats not worth listening to, it must not be listened to because its not worth it, nort because she, a WHITE woman, said it..

I still say, The current leadership of this country is f***ing this country up, and thats it...

Zuma and co still sing "umshini wam", and kill so and so To me, those types of songs are irrelevant nowadays, and that type of activism has become a relic.. Honestly, we need new songs.. How about some1 writes a toy-toy song which deals with our biggest enemies right now(no, not white ppl)? like a song about HIV? or Service delivery? or Poverty? or dropped education standards? or gettin rid of corruption?

Amazingly, we r supposed to be at the cutting edge, we are supposed to be progressive thinkers.. open-minded ppl.. u know, the 'brand news'.. but we r js as backwards as the rest of them, the only difference is that we speak proper english, have non-black friends, drink alcohol with fancy names and wear expensive clothes.. but we r js as backwards as the bundu-dwellers we r so ashamed to b compared to...

ey dawg. I didnt ask for your resume. knowing what the rest here already knows about your financial discipline i wouldnt be suprised to hear you own the building I work at in the future. big ups on your achievements.

but i tell you this, its great to know you caught feelings over me responding to you calling me stupid. have a great day buddy.  ;D
At least im business minded enough to try to own that building instead of wasting away in it errday.. dumb-a**..and u can go and suck on a bag of baby dicks buddy..

You dont need to take me seriously.. u dont need to.. im sure that wouldnt do anything for you, just like it doesnt do shit for me...
