Movie Talk / After Beginners

Mothers and fathers wish that it wasn't this hard.
Mothers will let you hide between their long summer dresses and petticoats from that relative who gives sloppy kiss.
Fathers will smack the back of your head to build up your tolerance to the hard hits that you will experience later on in life.

It feels perverse that these scrapes, cries and f***-its are there to build you.
That ultimately you being broken, then moulded only to become just another brick in the wall of human advancement.
And that's only if you get it right.
And to do that you have to get it wrong.
A lot of times.           

Your mother and your father will watch you as you grow.
And they'll fight with you because they think you are making it harder on yourself.

By falling in love with that boy from the parallel tracks.
By believing in the poetry of your time.
By having you heart broken so hard that you cry until you lose your breath and sound like a vacuum cleaner whose pipe gets stepped on again and again.

They will say, "Does she not know that she can get another one?"
"He was never good enough anyway"           

In life, you will be asked a lot of questions.
That's what life is about- not experiences.
They come after the questions like,
"Have you smoked this before?"
"It's okay, if you promise to pull out "

The questions will become harder.
And mothers will ask why are you not like your sister.
Father will curse themselves for not smacking you harder. 

It's hard.
And when something comes against something hard, it breaks.
Especially people.
You will find them in the next office.
At the till at Pick n Pay
On the other side of the bed.
People who find it so hard it hurts just thinking about it.
To steel themselves they will create things and hates.
And run to churches.

But when they talk about love, they talk about its rot.
When they talk of flowers it's at a graveyard.
When they talk about life, it's not.

At the bottom you will find those who never want it to be hard.
These people create nothing.
Love nothing. Achieve nothing.
And run away from everything.

In the middle are those who believe that the gods have it in for them.
They cry and then laugh.
Embrace them. Love these people.
They make great babysitters.

It's hard and it will break you.
Let it break you. Go on let it go on with it. 
And one day people will come up to you and say, "We never knew you were this beautiful"

You might have to excuse the spelling I'm a Soweto Zulu, but translated it means- no elephant found its trunk too heavy.

Oy, I know it's hot outside (Jsec baby) and there is low activity on this here bored.

But let's talk about character for a second or two.
That which builds you and shapes your destiny.
In society we laud people with character and make them our leaders or esteemed members of society.

Now here is where it gets sticky for South Africa.
Character (or good) character dictates that when you're actions are harmful and are at the detriment of the collective you have to stand down.
It's good character sacrifice and all. Right?

So let's take the judge whose surname means white but wont shake the hand of a white judge who is actually black. And let's forget for a second that he was effectively found to be guilty.

How can you have grown a** men calling and steaming at Kriegler on radio and defending a man with clear questionable character?
It seems that in South Africa, as a leader or have prominence, all you need to do is scream conspiracy and clog up our justice system that take 5 years to sentence brutal rapist and then be found guilty or get off under a dark cloud...

AVC: Why did you leave Johannesburg for Canada?

NB: Well, my family immigrated there. And I was at the point where I would have gone to university or art college or something, probably in the U.S., so I think I would have left anyway. But it just so happened that my family immigrated to Vancouver, and I’ve got a younger brother and sisters, and South Africa was pretty dodgy in the late ’90s, so—actually, it’s dodgy now. It’ll just be continuously dodgy, but we moved so that they could not be in a state of violence all the time.

AVC: What was it like shooting there?

NB: It was really grueling, but that was because the environment we were in was so abrasive. The actual area we were in, the people were very impoverished, but they’re very warm. That often happens in Johannesburg—people are super-warm, even though it’s a high-crime area. So when we got to the set, I was okay, but the thing that was psychologically having a go at me was that the big crime in Joburg is hijacking. Carjacking is the number-one thing. And this convoy of us going into this part of Soweto called Chiawelo was like an hour’s drive, each way, every single day… You don’t get a convoy of vehicles like that coming into impoverished areas. It just doesn’t happen, right? We were this moving target the whole time. And my driver one night dropped me off at my hotel, and after he left, he got hijacked. And they had a 9mm to his head, and they tried to take his girlfriend, and the car did get taken, so he had another rental car the next day. So my fear was the transport, not our location. Though Chiawelo, that area—like I said, the people are warm, but the environment is so caustic and unbelievably disgusting to be in. The crew were realizing that people live like this every day, while we were battling just to be there for two months. Every single thing is difficult. There’s broken gla** everywhere, there’s rusted barbed wire everywhere, the level of pollution is insane. And then in that environment, you’re trying to be creative as well. But of course, that gave birth to the creativity, so it kind of goes both ways.

Kinda late on this but I support that midget president of France.
Being atheist I obviously hold no brief for anyone but no one can tell me that having women wearing black from head to toe looking like mobile post boxes is not oppressive.
In fact it shows just how non-existant the understanding of women muslim men have.

There is no woman on this earth who doesn't want to dress up and look sexy.
 You wish some didn't, but no woman would voluntarily cover herself in black finish and klaar.

I had planned to write this up properly, but if I don't do it now I will forget.

A friend of mine visited someone in German.
When she got there she found that the friend lived in a shoebox.
On top of that, the friend didn't own it.
Thing is, my friend looked at it in a South African way.
The measure of success for us is a big car and an even bigger house.
But then the German friend told her why she rents a shoebox- to be able to afford a lifestyle. That means go restuarants, galleries, holidays, and all the other things that make the life experience fuller. I liked that and hoped one day when we (young black South Africans) are done dragging generations out poverty, and get over the need to own as means to prove your worth can possibly be that open.
Mind you I do know that we and foreigners view land and ownership differently.

Okay to make a long story slightly longer.
Just because it's a recession it does not mean you need to sit your a** down.
In this thread name all the inexpensive shops, bars and activities that one can get up to in J-sec that can make life so valuable. I'll start...

Movies.
Every Saturday morning, hangover permitting, I go to Carlton Center and watch movies for only 15 bucks. The selection is limited, but they always have at least one blockbuster in mix.

Food.
On Bree street up into Fordsburg there is an all you can eat buffet for only 49. Cheap and authentic Indian food. (Supply address later)
