General Discussion / Smart HipHoper's
« on: March 27, 2008, 01:14:32 PM »
A thread dedicated to HipHop artists who used the fame and money they received from hip hop music, to pursue other ventures and gain personal wealth.

I present to you: Eric B

Eric B. (born Louis Eric Barrier) was the producer and DJ for the rap duo Eric B. & Rakim.

Eric B. tried his hand at rapping in 1995 and released a self-titled album. The album was co-written with Freddie Foxxx.

In 1996, Eric B. was picked to head Suge Knight's Death Row East label (an extension of Death Row Records).

Eric is now the owner of 47 restaurants throughout the U.S. including New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, California, Texas, Washington DC, and most recently, Pennsylvania. Residing in a 57,000 sq. ft. palatial manor, Eric has become the ideological musician turned entrepreneur turned royalty and has truly taken his hit song Eric B. is President to fruition. With a car collection featuring seven Rolls Royce vehicles, including the famed Rolls Royce featured on the cover of Follow the Leader, Eric's vehicular menagerie features a Rolls Royce Phantom, Lamborghini, Ferrari, Aston Martin, and many other sought-after cars and trucks.

Recently featured on MTV Cribs, Eric B's home, with a staff of 14 grounds keepers, chefs, maids, and security staff, was influenced by oriental design.

In 2007 Eric was honored by the President of the United States with an invitation to the White House where he met President George W. Bush, the First Lady and other dignitaries.

New Eminem Produced By DJ Premier???
March 11th, 2008 | Author: Andreas Hale

Back in the 90’s it seemed that in order to be somebody you couldn’t possibly do an album without the legendary DJ Premier stamping his trademark production. From Nas to Jay-Z and everyone in between, a DJ Premier track made every artist worth talking about official. These days, those calls have dwindled as the younger crop of emcees have opted to go another route while Premier nurtures a new batch of emcees.

But there’s one person that needs that extra punch to make his comeback official and he picked up the phone to make that call…

Marshall Mathers aka Slim Shady aka Eminem

"I just got a call from Eminem," Primo revealed exclusively to HipHopDX.

The song, titled “Keys To The City,” will indeed be on Eminem’s upcoming album (possibly leaked as the street single) and will be the first time Slim Shady will put his signature flow over a DJ Premier backdrop.

“It’s a song that he actually produced and he wasn’t crazy about the track,” Premier says as he recalls the conversation between he and Em. “(I told him) as long as I can strip it clean and do what I do with your vocals it will be dope,” and the final result according to Premier?  “It’s dope!”

The former Gangstarr producer explained that he thought the initial song Eminem did with his own production was great but Eminem called, wanting that “DJ Premier sound.”

But how exactly will the two sound together?

“Man…Eminem is back,” Premier continues. “He attacked the track with a new style, just f***ing ridiculous, kind of like how he came with ‘The Way I Am’ but even more lyrical like the old Eminem.”

With a legend like DJ Premier saying that the song is “ridiculous” what more can you expect? Be on the lookout for “Keys To The City” off of the as-yet-titled Eminem album dropping this year.

Producers - Discussion / J Dilla RIP
« on: February 10, 2008, 10:41:04 AM »
James Dewitt Yancey (February 7, 1974–February 10, 2006) RIP Legend.

I've been asked to do a Dilla tribute for an upcoming mixtape. I refrained from doing one when he pa**ed away two years ago, and i've run out of excuses.

Basically the tribute, should be an eight minute beat, with transitions of some of Dilla's most famous joints, I have a number of samples that his flipped, so i just want to get feedback as too which direction i should take it. I
Would have really loved to collab with Becoming Phill on this one..

Heres the initial beat i started, it should metamorph a few times before its done. For those of you that use Acid Pro, i will upload the Acid Project when I'm done.

ANy one into open source software?

At first i was a bit skeptical but now, I've been living off Open Source software. There are so many nifty applications you can download and use for free.

The amount of high quality applications you can find, is amazing, my pc is kitted out with about 40% open source apps.

I think you can really save a ton with open source..

General Discussion / Load Shedding.
« on: January 21, 2008, 03:49:42 PM »
I really didn't have a problem with load shedding.. It had many benefits for me.. I was always an hour late for work, and could leave an hour early coz my supervisors would leave early to beat the rush.

I got out of recording sessions i didn't want to be in, my atm card got stuck in a machine one  afternoon when the power cut, i was meant to take the Mrs out for lunch, instead i saved a couple hundred...

For a a very short time, load shedding worked for me.

It became an issue when one of my LG flat screen monitors, got ruined. and it definitely became an issue when my 72" tv in the lounge got messed up, forcing me to miss the Nations cup opening game, and the Liverpool Aston Villa game tonight.

Has anyone else lost any appliances?

General Discussion / Best Hip Hop Song Writers
« on: January 16, 2008, 09:04:19 AM »
Since were in the business of discussing "best" this and "favorite" this lists these days, i figured i'd allow myself to add to it by asking your opinions on the "best Hip Hop Song Writers"

01 Tupac ( I'm not really a fan but he did make songs that appealled to the ma**es.. His songs were selfless in the sense that they were'nt as self centred as those of Biggie or Big L. He created seemless masterpieces, that blended catchy hooks and bridges with insightfull lyrics, that rallied and inspired people. I reckon he is tops)

02 Eminem (Another guy i never really got into, but he created exceptional songs, and proved  non-believers, who thought he was a one hit wonder, wrong, time and time again by delivering monster hit after monster hit. Marshal Mathers, I bow down.)

03 Public Enemy (I'm not sure whether they were great song writers or not, or if they were just a**isted by the cause they stood for. Either way, everyone raised their fists and fought the power)

04 Mos Def ( Black on Both sides in my eye, will forever be a masterpiece. I think it was one of the most accomplished pieces of music that was released in the 20th century. The definition of a Cla**ic Hip Hop Album)

05 Common ( Aside from "Can i Borrow a Dollar", Common's albums have always been pure and honest reflections of his personal and musical growth. This growth is easily identifyable when u go throug all his albums.. Well maybe up untill "Be" and "Finding Forever"  ::)

Locally

01 Zubz (I honestly think he takes it... I'm not saying he is the best lyrically, or has the best flow or any of that.. But he does know how to put toghethers songs and make an album. Each piece of the songs he works on are carefully constructed, and pieced toghether. He has the ability to pick the right beats, put the right musicians and vocalists on them. I even give him Co-producer credit for what he does.. A producer puts toghether a song, by envisioning an idea and executing it with the neccesary bits..

Whether you like the songs or hate the songs.. Very few artists do what he does..

Honorable Mention

02 Tumi ( I think Tumi is an exceptional writer and lyricist, probably the best the continent has ever produced, but i think at times he is his own worst enemy, I think he sometimes go's too complex and his verses are a little too long, for the average person to latch on to his message. But he is a gifted emcee, with bundles of talent)

03 HHP ( Not the illest lyricist out there, but what he lacks in lyricism he makes up for in charisma and charm)

I dunno What ya'll think?
