Media / ChuckD interview-get your learn on biaaatch
« on: July 02, 2010, 12:17:08 PM »
Chuck D of Public Enemy was one of the 104 emcees interviewed exclusively for the book How to Rap: The Art and Science of the Hip-Hop MC. The following is the full interview, where Chuck gives his opinions on everything from writing lyrics in your head to doing punch-ins.

With a previous glimpse at Kool G Rap's writing process, author Paul Edwards again provided HipHopDX with these exclusive insights into the emceeing techniques of a true legend.

How to Rap: How did you learn how to rap?

Chuck D: I don’t know if I really learned how to rap, all I know is that at one particular time there was no Rap music. When I was growing up there was The Last Poets, there was James Brown.

[Later] I was turned on by the fact that these guys out of the Bronx were making these tapes and I was intrigued by the rhythm, how they delivered their raps. And then from that point on, I kind of mimicked what I heard and I liked the guys with the great voices, guys like [Grandmaster] Melle Mel, I thought they were just unbelievable, and so I kinda followed guys like that and came up with my own style.

There’s been an outpouring of sympathy for fallen Jam Alley presenter and former actress Vinolia Mashego.

This is after this paper reported that Mashego, popularly know as V-Mash, was found naked outside the back room she is renting in Kew, north of Jozi.

When we visited Mashego, we discovered she was living in poor conditions.

Mashego, who has been renting a room for about two months, had only a mattress and one blanket in her room.

This is a far cry from sleeping at five-star hotels, as she did during her peak – as an MC at events while she was still hot property at Jam Alley. She has since become a beggar – asking neighbours to donate food and blankets.

After we published last week’s story, renowned dancer and choreographer Somizi Mhlongo and other celebs came forward to help her.

Mhlongo says he was touched by the story. He says Mashego is one of the people he loves in the entertainment industry.

“I’m not saying I have much, but I’m willing to help her to get back on her feet again. I don’t just want to offer her money, but also my support,” says Mhlongo.

He says he sympathises with Mashego because he knows what she is going through and celebs need to be each other’s insurance.

“You can’t take away talent and it’s never over until God says so,” says Mhlongo.

Pastor Sello Mophethe of Eagle Christian Church says he doesn’t know her personally, but after he read the story about Mashego he and congregants at his church decided to offer their help.

“We don’t know how to reach her, but we are willing to support in terms of a job so that she can earn money to buy food and clothing,” says Mophethe.

Mophethe says if Mashego, who played Hilda in Generations, doesn’t want a job they can offer blankets and clothes.

Among other good Samaritans, Velly Silinda says it’s sad that such a role model and inspiration to many youths can end up like that.

“I just want to extend my hand and help her pick up the pieces of her life in the form of a roof over her head and transport to get her going.

“Who knows, maybe she will have a breakthrough,” he says.

But this week we learnt that Mashego moved out of her rented room and nobody knows where she has moved to.

Her neighbours, who didn’t want their names published, say Mashego told them she was moving out because “they are out to get her”.

“Last time we spoke to her she hinted she was moving to Hillbrow or back to her home in Pretoria,” says the neighbour.

When her landlord Lerato Ngwenya was contacted, a lady who picked up the phone said Mashego moved out and they didn’t know where she was.

“ Why don’t you call her on her cellphone?” they said.

But Mashego lost her cellphone the night she was found naked. She couldn’t be reached for comment on the good news about the help that is being offered.

General Discussion / Dr Dre the greatest producer of all-time

After weeks of a bracket-style producer match-up, Vibe.com officially announced that Dr. Dre won their "Greatest Producer of All-Time" contest, after going head-to-head with DJ Premier in the final round and garnering 62% of the fans' votes.

According to Vibe.com, there were a total of 189,425 votes in the six rounds, which they launched back in early April, which included a number of great producers in several categories, including Scott Storch, the Neptunes, Lil Jon, Kanye West, the Alchemist, DJ Muggs and Havoc of Mobb Deep, among others.

As expected Dre was the winner.

During his run in the contest, Dre beat out Atlanta producer DJ Toomp in the first round, fellow West Coaster DJ Quik in the second and De La Soul's Prince Paul in the third. Then, the Compton vet edged out Bomb Squad in the Elite 8 round to go up against Kanye West in the final four, where a 68% advantage earned him a spot in the finals.

The Final Four were Dr. Dre Vs. Kanye West, and DJ Premier Vs. The Neptunes. Obviously, Dre took on Premier as mentioned and won.

The contest reached Dre himself, who humbly accepted the honor.

"I just found out that I got voted VIBE's best producer of all time. That shit is incredible," Dre told VIBE. "I'm a humble person and I would've never expected that, seriously. I just go in the studio. I try to do my thing to the best of my ability."

Now that Dre is crowned "Greatest Producer of All-Time," Vibe wants to know which era was his finest. You can vote among his NWA, Death Row, early Aftermath and modern day eras at www.Vibe.com.

No Question he is the best.

AG Wire / R.I.P Nujabes
« on: March 23, 2010, 11:06:43 AM »

Nujabes (born Jun Seba), a Japanese hip-hop producer, was killed in a car accident in Tokyo. Nujabes crashed when leaving the Metropolitan Expressway in Tokyo's Minato Ward. Nujabes was 36 years old when he died. The car crash that killed Nujabes took place on February 26, 2010, the same day a magnitude 7.3 earthquake struck off the coast of Japan. Nujabes' death was only publicly confirmed by Hydeout Productions and by his friend and collaborator, Shing02, today; he was buried by his family in a private ceremony. Nujabes was the founder of Hydeout Productions, as well as the owner of two Tokyo record stores, Guinness Records and T Records. Nujabes (who came by his artistic name by spelling his real name backwards) also contributed music to the anime "Samurai Champloo", an anachronistic tale mixing samurai lore and modern hip-hop culture. Nujabes was a private person, and so many, even those who worked closely with him, did not know he had died. The common Internet death rumors did not make it to the English-speaking web, and this is a rare case in which an artist's actual death notice preceded the rumors.

With the first two albums including then-group member and producer 9th Wonder, the group would ascend to signing a major label deal with Atlantic Records to release The Minstrel Show. Independent again, LeftBack marks the group's first project away from ABB Records, though it does include familiar voices, including Khrysis (of The Away Team), Darien Brockington, Jozeemo, Carlitta Durand, and Zo!, all of the Justus League family.

Coney Island Brooklyn emcee Torae appears on a song, as former B.R. Gunna producer Young R.J. and fellow Michigan native Denaun "Mr." Porter offer production.

"We wanted the fans to have that moment of nostalgia when looking at this artwork" said Rapper Big Pooh in a statement. "You are able to take a quick journey from the beginning of our careers to the end as Little Brother by glancing at the artwork."

Both Phonte and Pooh have pursued solo projects in recent years.
