"...and my interviews are hotter. Holla!"
- Jay-Z

I got to break it down with the homie J Rocc from The Beat Junkies.

“This guy named Sweet G – I don’t know if you know the [cla**ic 1983 electro] song Al-Naafiysh? This guy used to get that intro and…he used to bend the record almost like a taco and just scratch and just cut it up! That was his gimmick. And he was really dope. He was my Q-Bert. He was the Q-Bert from my generation. He was killer. He’d do that scratch and people would go crazy."

Yesterday marked the 17th Anniversary of Illmatic (19.04.1994)

I believe that warrants a post.

General Discussion / SA Music Mags
« on: January 31, 2011, 03:33:35 PM »
Need some help peeps.

Got a doozy of a story I'm trying to sell. It involves the 10 year anniversary of an SA electronica label.

It's not quite right for Hype mag, and although I've offered it to the M&G they haven't bitten yet.

What other music mags in SA exist that might be able to a carry a decent, full-length feature story? And pay for it? My initial thoughts are BPM, One Small Seed...no, that's about it. Any thoughts?

Need some info for a story I'm writing.

I hear Tuks Senganga now has his own cellphone starter pack. Does anybody know anything about this? What network is it on?

Thanks fellas.  ;)

General Discussion / Termanology
« on: November 24, 2010, 11:28:37 AM »

“I drunk a whole bottle of vodka last night. I do that every night,” Term says, seemingly apropros of nothing.

“You’re liver’s going to be hurting soon!” cracks Jo, the show’s promoter, sitting opposite him.

“I know,” says Term slightly wistfully. “I gotta stop, for real. I’m starting to feel the effects lately. But you see, I’m good. A lot of people would be throwing up their guts right now. I drink so much it’s like, whatever. I think I’m going to put myself in rehabilitation for real. I think it’s about that time. Maybe around January. I fiend for it. Alcoholism runs very deep in family; it’s destroyed half of my family. I didn’t realise that. My mother kept telling me that – like, serious, serious. Now that I’m starting to see, I’m like, I’m kind of destroying myself.”

Producers - Discussion / No separates!
« on: November 22, 2010, 11:49:18 AM »
Let's say you're making a rap tune. Let's say your producer used a single sample, slowed down and manipulated, for the beat. That's it - no drums, no ba**, no extra bits. Just this sample. It's really cool though.

You need to sit the vocals on the beat, which is on a single audio track.

Any tips or thoughts on how to proceed? How does one sit the vocal?

General Discussion / Rob One's Jean Grae/Pharoahe Monch interview
« on: November 05, 2010, 02:24:28 PM »

"A few blocks up is a nondescript hotel apartment complex, perched on Bayswater Road like a sitting dog. Monch (born Troy Jamerson) is in one of its anonymous rooms on the third floor. Opposite him at the table is Jean Grae (born Tsidi Ibrahim), his tour buddy and increasingly frequent collaborator. It’s a music cliché to say that an artist looks tired, but both Monch and Jean Grae do. Scratch that: they look exhausted. A huge show at London’s Jazz Café the night before and an entire afternoon of video, radio and press interviews has left the duo pretty zonked."

What would be your top pick for an SA hip-hop collabo album? Internationally, we've got Jay-Z and R.Kelly, Wu Ma**acre, Nas and Damian Marley...

If two SA rappers/crews were to team up, who would it be?

My picks:
- Zubz and Tumi
- Last Days Fam and Ill Skillz
- Ben Sharpa and Robo
- Slikour, HHP and Shugasmackx

Sports Arena / The 2010/2011 NBA Thread

NBA Preseason is open. Flags stuck in the ground already. Who you got? Who's your pick, based on what you've seen so far?

My Bulls fell to Milwaukee, D-Wade off with an injury, Bosh and James do OK.
