General Discussion / Good hip-hop writers in SA
« on: August 06, 2007, 11:52:52 PM »
Just as an off-shoot from the Zuluboy thread...

Are there any really excellent hip-hop writers in SA? because honestly, I'm struggling to find any. People like Therese Owen (The Star) who think that because they have interviewed Skwatta once or twice it qualifies them to write about hip-hop.

Simone Harris from HYPE is pretty good. And their new guy Lesego Moiloa. Any other suggestions?

General Discussion / Worst hip-hop songs from SA artists
« on: July 31, 2007, 11:21:02 PM »
It seems to me there are enough songs that have/are being generated in SA rap now that we can start having some Best Ofs and Worst Ofs. The best tracks get discussed all the time, so let's have some fun. What is your least favourite SA hip-hop track?

No hating or unnecessary roughness, just good vaguely clean fun.

For me it's Driemanskaap - Mhee. I think DMK are the shit, but that is the song they will be playing in hell when I get there.

General Discussion / HOME STUDIO QUESTION
« on: July 01, 2007, 03:02:08 PM »
I'm cash-strapped but looking to buy a mic for a basic home studio. One option I am considering is buying a Samson C01 USB condensor mic (ie I would not have to go through a preamp) - not ideal, I know, but saves cash and may work for my purposes (vocals).

Is this a workable solution as opposed to a straight mic and a preamp?

General Discussion / KRS-One
« on: June 19, 2007, 01:23:25 AM »
Sunday night was heaven for me. I mean honestly, truly, can't-get-better-than-that heaven.

KRS-One. Live at the Forum in London. With Marley Marl as his DJ. Oh, and Maseo from De La Soul as the WARM UP ACT.

Step Into a World. The MC. Sound of the Police. South bronx. Criminal Minded. Kill a Rapper. Hip-Hop Lives. Get Yourself Up. And although I feel guilty for it, the best bit was when he rocked his verse from the Cla**ic remix over Premo's beat.

Wow.

Dude had b-boys rocking with him on stage damn-near the entire set. He had live graff artists on there, and he signed their canva**es along with them and pa**ed them out to the crowd.

You can call him old. You can call him irrelevant or over the hill or a fuddy-duddy. But on Sunday night, KRS proved that he gives one of the best, craziest, most energetic and ridiculous live shows in hip-hop. No-one can take this cat on stage. He does it all.

I have videos, and I will up them soon. I may miss SA rap, I may not be able to go watch Zubz/Nthabi/Landmynz/Tumi/Proverb kick it in Newtown, I may get a sick feeling in my stomach every Saturday night because I'm missing the coolest hip-hop radio show on planet earth (THE HIPHOCALYPSE for those of you keeping score) but...

But at least there some advantages to this London lark.

General Discussion / Marley-Marl has heart attack
« on: June 07, 2007, 10:37:30 AM »
Koch Records has confirmed that legendary hip-hop producer Marly Marl has suffered a heart attack yesterday (June 5) and is currently hospitalized.
Marley Marl, who hails from the Queensbridge Projects in Queens, NY, is a founding member of 1980's golden era hip-hop collective the Juice Crew, featuring such rap heavyweights as Big Daddy Kane, Kool G Rap, MC Shan and Biz Markie, among others. Marley is also responsible for founding famed record label Cold Chillin', and producing for LL Cool J, Eric B & Rakim and TLC.
Most recently Marley Marl (born Marlon Williams) united with longtime rival KRS-One for the Koch release Hip-Hop Lives, a response record to fellow Queensbridge alumni Nas, whose last album was titled Hip Hop Is Dead. Marly's collaboration with KRS, Hip-Hop Lives, which hit stores last month, marks the first time the two hip-hop pioneers worked together since battling each other on wax in the late 80's.
As of press time, no further details have been released about the producer's condition. Marley Marl is 44-years-old.

Hold thumbs for the master, cats! Let's hope he gets through this...

I don't get it.

I don't mean it's crap or a waste of time, I just don't get it. I've read up on the movement, heard the music, seen the videos and those weird album covers, and I just don't get it. Although I must say ghostriding is nice...

Is there anyone who can actually explain the appeal?

General Discussion / Juelz Santana can rap?!?!

OH MY GOD.

Now we all know Santana to have previously demonstrated his complete inability to spit. But then he goes and drops this little number...

I am officially impressed. Not converted, because Dipset still suck, but impressed.

General Discussion / Studio Equipment
« on: May 24, 2007, 11:23:03 AM »
If I put this in the producers thread it'll dissapear and I'd like a bit of input :-)

I want to set up a very basic home studio. Already I have:

Decent computer (iBook G4 with plenty of RAM)
Reason 3.0
E-MU Xboard 25 Midi Controller
Aurex A10 Stereo Amp
Two pairs of Pioneer monitors - not great but they'll have to do

I need:

A decent studio microphone and micstand
A mixing board of some sort
Soundproofing (this I can sort out, I plan to use polystyrene boards with baffling foam attached to form a portable booth)

My questions are:

- What is a good entry level mic and mixer to consider for someone on a limited budget? (Think between R1500-R2000 for both)
- Do I need anything else that I haven't considered yet?

General Discussion / New hip-hop show
« on: May 15, 2007, 01:42:41 PM »
Hey guys.

In the next couple of weeks I will be launching a new hip-hop radio show called 20/20. It will be a weekly downloadable hip-hop podcast, twenty minutes in length, blending four or five tracks and a selection of hip-hop news from the past week.

The idea is to offer a free chunk of technically sound, listenable, professional hip-hop radio every week. I intend not to put limits on the tracks I feature - rather than being a show with an African or underground or US or whatever focus, I'll just play what I consider to be good hip-hop music. That includes brand new tracks, nice remixes etc.

I'm not doing this for money (it will be a free download), I'm just doing it so I can keep my radio blade sharp, have some fun, share some good music and maybe start something cool.

That's the basics. What I'd like from the discerning, intelligent and highly good-looking heads on AG is a bit of constructive critique.

What do you look for in hip-hop radio? What kind of stuff would you like to hear? What should I avoid?

let me know. peace

Imagine, if you will.

Imagine Canibus, combined with Immortal Technique, with a dash of the Alkoholics and Ol Dirty Bastard.

Stick this image into the body of Pieter van Zyl and give him a Newcastle accent. An ugly fat f*** wielding a pint in one hand and a mic in the other. And, oh yeah, he is SICK with his.

The dude lived on the streets of London after moving there from Newcastle, and recorded The Homeless Microphonist EP in seven days.

I'll post a track as soon as I can. You guys need to hear this dude.[/img]
