General Discussion / New iTunes store in SA
« on: July 11, 2008, 08:45:32 PM »
Quote
...While the opening this South African iTunes "app" store will no doubt continue fuelling the hype and the excitement already in the market, the mere fact that an iTunes presence now exists in South Africa suggests that Apple might be poised to bring a full-service iTunes store to South Africa in the months to come.

While the company has not confirmed or denied this rumour, sources close to the Apple camp have inferred that the groundwork has already been laid for the transition to a full-blown 'music and video' store to take place, and furthermore that Apple would literally have to flick a switch to do so...

I'm posting this because there was some discussion earlier in the year about the lack of such a store on the SA shores. So I guess the independent labels will have one more reason to stay independent

General Discussion / Artists who made an impact in 2006
« on: December 15, 2006, 11:21:41 AM »
Personally, last year MF Doom did it for me. Dude was everywhere... Dangerdoom, MM...Food, Gorillaz...

And this year, a coupla people have inspired me with their hustle:

1. Talib Kweli - dude personifies the whole notion of an independent artist

2. Stones Throw - okay, the artists on this label did a lot of cool moves. The Oh No/Galt McDermot project, the Chrome Children compilation (smart move), Aloe Blacc, Georgia-Anne Muldrow...props

3. Tumi - thepoetslashemceefromSA :D . I think it's really smart for him to have released two near-perfect projects in one year, and keep up with that hectic tour schedule.

4. Ben Sharpa - he was just EVERYWHERE!!! Can't say a lot about his album though, it's NOWHERE to be found. Props

Hot Traxxx / DJ Shadow (Endtroducing)
« on: October 18, 2006, 09:42:38 AM »
This is  a legendary release...

Quote
Well, the number one album on Muzik's list, their pick for the number one dance album of all time, was DJ Shadow's Endtroducing...

DJ Shadow -- AKA Josh Davis -- wasn't the first DJ to create "instrumental" (non-rapping) hip-hop, or the first person to sample a record or even the first artist to win critical acclaim doing so. He had been around for a long time before the release of Endtroducing..., releasing underground mix-tapes and singles on James Lavelle's MoWax label. The concept of the album was hardly unique, except in the respect that it was so damn good -- a methodical and studied celebration of ideas which had been around for a while but had yet to be fully exploited. Davis came along at just the right time in history to make an impact, a time when an album like Endtroducing... could stand out because it exemplified the best of so many progressive trends in popular music. In terms of it's immediate importance it probably can't equal Nevermind or The Chronic, but in terms of its influence, its stature and its quality, Endtroducing... could lay a serious claim to being the most important album of the 1990s.

Hot Traxxx / For my Madlib fanatics

This might be pretty dated already...but hey, enjoy

Madlib is a hip-hop producer who likes to make compilations, DJ live, do remixes amongst other things. He has many projects and aliases including Madvillan, Lootpack and Jaylib.  Blunted in the Bomb Shelter is one of the many projects that Madlib has undertaken rather successfully.  This is a mix CD that skanks and trips through the Trojan back catalogue.  There are 45 tracks that make up the 64 minutes of this CD.  Madlib claims that this mix was recorded in his basement bomb shelter, and who are we to disbelieve him?  There are some lovely tracks on here with a nice variety of styles covered.  Artists include Zap Pow, The Vulcans, Trinity, David Issacs, Don Drummond, Price Far I, King Tubby, The Chosen Few and Mikey Dread.  Like all decent DJs/producers, Madlib has a good ear for hooks and picks the best section of each track.  This of course means that the listener is constantly thinking, "I know that track from somewhere."  This is a great way of hearing a fresh sounding mix of cla**ics and always makes me smile.  The only slight issue with this mix is that occasionally Madlib puts in some extra sound effects in between tracks.  This can be a little irritating but does not detract from the overall quality of the mix

General Discussion / The role played by radio in SA???
« on: June 05, 2006, 11:51:14 PM »
Word! Just wanted to find out if having a track on high rotation at some national radio station in South Africa has a direct impact on the number of units an artist is going to push.

Over here, I really don't think it does. I mean, some songs get played a lot - and do get pple talking - but that doesn't necessarily translate to more sales.

Also, is payola a big problem over there (insiders, anyone???)? I'm so in love with the independent stuff (anything, long as it's released independently - big ups to LandMynz, Blkmyst fxn, and anyone across Afrika who are doing it for themselves...Deep Down Uhuru, Hiphocalypse, DJ Cavera C, et. al)... but I reckon it's hindered from reaching ears of the public by these payola-obsessed radio freaks normally referred to as deejays (ay, no offence Sync, I'm just referring to some of them  )

...and the Internet. I know it's a good medium for indy stuff to get out there. But, look at the bigger picture. Not many pple have Internet access on a broadband scale (512 mb+), and the ones I know can only access it from work, school, etc., with dial-up connection. This begs the question of how far one can actually reach by putting their stuff on the Internet.

Take me for example. I know of a lot of projects which've been put up on the net as free downloads: Perigo Minas Vol. 1 (MrC, pay me for mentioning Landmynz more than once on this thread), Damolaa's "Break even" mixtape, that Archetypes promo (props to Dplanet), DL's "Soul Movement"....hell, I can take a lot of time mentioning them.

While I do actually own some of these excellent products, a lot I can't download because of bandwidth limitations. Yeah, the buzz has reached me and all, but I can't hear shit.

Here's a challenge: what can be done to get music to be heard by cats EVERYWHERE, even those without regular Internet connection????

My suggestion: establish connections @ various spots. For example, get some well-connected guy in Sweden, another in Japan, Brazil, the States, England, Sudan, Kenya, Nigeria...f*** it, everywhere  !!!
Then send these people your promo shit (via mail). From there, they can bootleg the product to death, generate the buzz, get the shit on community radio stations, etc. Basically, let pple know about you.

My contribution: I have a couple of friends in influential positions here in Lesotho (ha ha ha!!!), and would be more than glad to distribute your product via them, and other friends. Believe me, peeps here are hungry for the indy stuff...it's just that they haven't gotten around to learning that 'buying' the shit is actually better than...umm...forgot wat i was goin' to say, f***it!!!

So, if you or any of your friends need promotion, Biz-ark-human is your man in Lesotho. My address is:

...I wrote that in gray, PM me to get the full postal address details.

ps. maybe the subject should've been a bit different, but then again, the reason I don't usually start threads is because I can't find the appropriate fukkkin' subject.

Much luv and respect to the AG fam. Let's promote free culture, and help independent music grow. truly yours
