Kev and John are two-thirds of the collective Mix-N-Blend, a Cape-Town based outfit which has released material through the Afrikan Dope label. Apart from playing at Oppikoppi and preparing to tour some venues out in Europe, they have just completed their album which will be out anytime from now. The project features the likes of Crosby, EJ Von Lyrik, and the Rudimentals' horn section.

They came into the studio primarily to talk about the "Cape of Good Dope II" compilation, but ended up dispersing a whole lot of useful information for all the Mzanzi Mamela ma**ive. Amongst the things they touched on were how to make money on an independent label, what to expect from their album, and the lawsuit that got levelled against Afrikan Dope at some point in time.

Quote1: "I'd say whatever you really wanna do, go and do that becuase, it's taken me about four-and-a-half years and a B-Comm honours in Information Systems to figure out that I didn't want to be a Systems Analyst...I wanted to make music"

Quote2: "Unless you are targeting the Afrikaans music market..you're never gonna make money!"

Mzanzi Mamela is UCT Radio's flagship hip-hop show, hosted every Monday from 6 to 9 pm under the very capable hands of Benzo and his co-host, Core Wreckah. The playlist is inclined on mostly left-field, yet accessible, form of hip-hop. We strive by all means to represent rap from most places in Afrika (Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Angola, Kenya), and elsewhere in the world (Australia, UK, Sweden, Netherlands, Canada).

Tied in with the music are features such as the "Eighties", the "Nineties", "Women in Music", and regular interviews with hip-hop artists and activists. To date, we have interviewed the likes of Crosby (Cape Town), Rattex (Cape Town), Mix-N-Blend (Cape Town), Zubz (Jozi), Zaki Ibrahim (Canada), Pete Philly and Perquisite (Netherlands), and others.

We do not leave the important element of the deejay behind. The likes of Falko Starr, Funafuji, and White Nite have been kind enough to grace us with their presence. Our demographic is not only limited to the University of Cape Town student population, but extends to the greater Cape Town region, with our strongest base perhaps being in the Cape Flats (Athlone, Mitchell's Plain, Khayalitsha, Gugulethu).

P.S. You can also send tracks through which'll be considered for playlisting. Do not forget to send some info on yourself, along with Publisher and Composer details.

Headphone music in parallel world was stellar i don't know what you were listening to....Didn't the nicca just start blogging this year?

which artist battles after being ten years in the game? (No supanat).  Judging by his latest release i think he seems to have outgrown "i'm nicer than you" type of rhymes...

Well, I suppose what you're talking about is relevant to what the man said. I co-host a show on UCT Radio, 104.5FM, called Mzanzi Mamela (Mondays 6-9pm). Check out this interview we did with him about a month back. Check the link:

« on: April 05, 2009, 02:51:22 PM »
Just got back from Mos Def... the show was mind-blowing,,, pretty much a religious experience.

Can't believe cats are 'mad disappointed' with the performance. That's the illest shit i've seen in years.

Cats that couldn't get in need to up their hustle game. It was easy!

Yo, there's no doubt about it...kinda expected that kinda performance. Magical indeed, peace to Robert Glasper and his experiment.

Mos Def, for the Jo'burg people, will be there on the 9th though, at least that's what I've been told by the guy who's hooking it up. Zaki Ibrahim will be opening up for him...
