General Discussion / Regulations of culture??

firstly i am not tryna convey any rasta message whatsoeva, have no interest in the movement, i have respect for them and all that but im not part of that struggle. As for u saying the struggle is over, where the hell are u living, the struggle is far from over, yes we are not part of the same struggle that tata mandela fought, ours is a totally different struggle. How many peeps do you know today who are struggling with identity issues, sexuality issues, esteem issues, moral issues, shit i cud go on and on. everyday is a struggle. So if u aint aware of any struggle, pls fill me in on where u living cos that must be sum kinda utopia. Secondly yes maybe my name is very unimaginative to you, and u can diss it and whateva you want, but the blaque is actually an acronym, but i wont bother filling u in on what it stands for, cos that´ll probably just spark anutha debate, and u know what i bn  defending myself, my opinions,my name etc all day,and wud realy like to chill out now...  :-]  :-]  :-]

i think most of the hype given to jozi emcees comes courtesy of yfm, who will basically shove that ish down your throat, and whoevas responsible for putting the playlist togetha isnt doing a good job of reflecting true hip-hop in the south african sense. they should be playing hip-hop from all over sa, im tired of hearing skwatta, selwyn, proverb, prokid, pitch black(who doesnt even qualify as an mc in my eyes) etc etc. I think we need more diversity, and that can only be done, by reaching out to the whole of sa, and giving mc´s from all over exposure. I long for the day where i can hear a track and be like yeah thats definitely a pta/ct/j-sec/mpumalanga track. know what i mean....????

healthy rivalry being the operative phrase. I just feel that there aknowledgement is mos def needed within the diff regions. I mean i hardly know any CT emcees except 4 the ones that ive bn exposed to like the 5th floor crew and sum of the groundworks ppl, other than that im clueless.I´ve been hearing a lot about this konfab dude, and heard that ´sistagal´ track which is quite hot, but i guess my point is that the average person in jozi probably knows nuthing bout the ct scene.

yes, i have also noticed that hip-hop is becoming regionally cleavaged. Especially the whole CT VS J-sec vibe. I think thats really wack, j-sec mc´s are sooo anti- ct and the same with CT mc´s. I think they should embrace the different soundz, and work 2getha.Imajin if sum1 could sponsor a collabo cd between j-sec and cape town emcees, i think that wud be blazing hot..

So, just bcos i live in sandton, you´ve already stereotyped, boxed and labeled me as sum chickenhead who shops at rosebank and wears stoned cherrie. thats crazy judgemental on your part, i dont need to live in yeoville and make my own clothes to know what i´m talkin about. This is what i cant stand about this hip-hop culture, yes i am from a privileged background, and i will not apologise for that. My parents worked hard to get where they are, and i do the same. Just cos i rock short skirts doesnt mean shit, i can wear whatever i want, live wherever i want, speak however i want, and still get down to sum dark a** dungeon beats. who said anything about Kweli anyway???oh and by the way I AM AN ASPIRING POET!

General Discussion / wat happened Progressive HIPHOP?
« on: September 21, 2004, 06:00:00 PM »
yo, i feel both sides of the argument. People find ´conscious´ hip-hop boring, but i think it depends on the person. like for me, a song is not just about the beats, its also about the lyrics, and i dont wanna be bopping my head in agreement to sum vulgar, morally regenerative ish. i´d rather listen to sumthing positive, or listen to an emcee fill me in on an issue that affects us. Like Jeru the damaja is on that conscious tip, but his ish is engaging, etertaining and also very thought provoking(i´m not your average nigga), and how about Dead prez on that psychology and animal in man, and Ra** Ka** on drama, there are plenty of mc´s that feed us sum nice ish. But i do undastand that peeps can get bored listening to that ish all the time. altho i dont! And i also think that as people we´ve been conditioned to a  certain vibe with regards to hip-hop. not many people are expposed to the ´conscious´ mc´s whereas the ´degenerative pimp´ mc´s are like everywhere, magazines, mtv, sabc the media is like pumping that ish, and i think that thats where the problem lies...

but how can you people say such sexist sh*t. I dont get it whatsoever. Yes u do have a point that hip-hop is dominated by men, that i wont even oppose. BUT, i dont think that bcos of that, Hip-hop is not 4 females.now im speaking from my own personal point of view, i am female and i am a huge hip-hiop fan. I listen to and digest it...it speaks to me, is as equally relevant to me as it is to u. Music knows no gender. If theres truth in your music(and theres alot of that in hip-hop), its going to appeal to males and females cos at the end of the day truth is truth. I have even become desensitised to all the misogyny etc etc, because alot of what they say at the end of the day is truth, and it doesnt bother me cos im a female and i know there are females out there who behave in such and such a way. anyway back to my point, i enjoy hip-hop, and not your obvious ooh girl shake that thang type. i like the coscious type, like Jeru, i like Ra** Ka**(Drama...thats my ish), i like Shaheem, i like Lil brother, Masta Ace, shew i cud go on and on. As for this conscious VS cool war. I´M NOT INVOLVED! i think to each his own, if peeps wanna live on sum moral highground and foreva be preachin to the rest of us, thats their baby, frankly i wudnt wanna live my life checking if peeps are living by the laws of the universe and all that crap, and constantly reprimanding them if they step outta line. Whateva man!
