General Discussion / the tighest mcee in south africa?

my reason behind stating that the illest MC has to be from CT... is..

u take 100 emcees from jozi.. ask them to spit bars and even in Tswana, Zulu or Sotho you´ll be hearing the Talib Kweli or some other stateside influence filtering thru...

now take a kid from CT (like Denzio for example... he´s small like Mzambiya)..
this laitie does not have that much exposure to international artists... nobody´s gonna lend him tapes or cds because of his age - so he goes and makes up his own style... and what u get is TOTAL F U C K I N G ORIGINALITY...

i hung out in Carlton Centre once and this 12-year old whippersnapper that was roling with Mizchif walked up to me.. Chamu intro-ed me as his boy from the muthacity... this kid opened his mouth and all i heard was "ghetto" (as opposed to "township")

then there´s the fact that Cape Town cats have - for the last 15 years - not known what to do to break into the industry.. or just get their shit out there... (thanx to cats like Milkdaddy and Rozzano that´s changing) Jozi has always had Voice of Soweto when YFM was not up and running yet... so there was always exposure... (I remember Amu telling me that the first day Mizchif set foot in Jozi, he got his a** promoted on Voice of Soweto... Amu then jumped in his pops´ car and went to the station to meet this cat with the American slang "he´s heard so much about"..)

SO THERE... EVEN WAYBACK THEN THE "EXPOSURE FACTOR" WAS EXISTENT I JOZI... CAPE TOWN CATS ARE STILL STRUGGLING...

THE ONLY THING I GIVE JOZI EMCEES PROPS FOR IS "HOOKS"... THEY CAN MAKE SOME WACK a** LYRICIST SOUND TIGHT WITH A SIMPLE HOOK IN A SONG..

General Discussion / hiphop hangouts

if i´m not mistaken...
the original issue was whether or not THERE IS SUCH A THING AS A GIG IN JOHANNESBURG THAT YOU CAN GO TO AND HEAR THE DEEJAYS CRANK OUT NOTHING BUT PURE... UNADULTERATED... UNDILURED...  HIPHOP.. OR RAP MUSIC FOR THOSE WHO WANNA KEEP IT TRUE...

I´M NO PURIST...
I´M JUST A CAT WHO´S BEEN UP IN THERE WHEN HIPHOP HIT SOUTH AFRICA IN 1984... SEEN IT ALL... DONE IT ALL... I BEEN B-BOY... A MC... A TAG-UP ARTIST(couldn´t afford spray cans in ´89)... I STARTED SPINNING VINYL IN ´92...(still colect but don´t spin commercially)... A PROMOTER (the only one that flew DJ Blaize to spin in CT - jussouknow)... HIPHOP JOURNALIST... AND I KINDA PLAYED A ROLE IN THE EVOLUTION/MOVE OF HIPHOP INTO SOUTH AFRICAN CYBERSPACE...
BUT THE ONE THING I´M NOT IS A PURIST...

my understanding of Jozi hiphop is that it´s on some DJ Clue/Funkmaster Flex shit...

there is no such thing as a PURE hiphop gig in Jozi.. just R&B gigs that will feature Bionic.. Blaize.. C-Live etc... (i heard DJs get paid though)

so my answer would be that Jozi has NO hiphop hangouts... (except Carlton Centre of course)
