Producers - Discussion / What!? Beatsampler...
« on: April 09, 2005, 05:54:58 PM »
Sup peeps.

Nice to see that ppl are startin to upload n show some skills. Its only good for everybody. Good to get inspired by other ppls improvements.

Time to take it up another step. Heres a beatsampler i put together... 10+ beats - total running time is about 7 minutes.

Check it out.

I dont ONLY make beats for mc's. Some of these tracks are more compositions. Very focused on always capturing a moment of musical and harmonic 'soul' in every beat. Not everybody into that all that much (u wont find dark grimey shit here)... so this might not be for everybody. Feedback - as always - appreciated.

Btw. all these loops (well most) are painstakingly constructed. Mostly composed riffs usin reason instruments. i NEVER just sample a whole loop from a record and just stick some drums and effects on top of it. So the longest sample snippets u hear are no longer than a second . if long sections sound sampled its cuz its been constructed that way... All samples arranged in way to try to make musical progression unique and different (indistinguishable from original), which IMHO is what makes a 'producer' vs a 'beatmaker' - (check out primo, hi tek etc - cats will never just lift a sample and not change it to make it their own style).

Always heavy focus on drums... 2 of the tracks use sampled drum loops the rest are constructed layerin samples (especially for snare- always layer 3 of 4 snares on top of each other).. n phattened up usin compression eq etc.

General Discussion / Black Myst Compilation - Look out!
« on: January 21, 2005, 03:44:00 PM »
Cape Town Hip-Hop horizons:

Dont believe the hype.... if its just yappin and no substance.

Instead of recruiting an army of propagandeers (for minimal pay) to help me create a 25 page thread to rep how OFF THE HIZZLE, the up n coming BlackMyst productions Compilation is gonna be (look familiar?),
we just gonna let the music do the talkin - Cape Town´s finest MC´s n Producers n Dj´s.

So every-once in a while gonna post some beats and samples that might or might not make the cut on the final product.

Track numero uno:

Instrumental Beat to be laced by Konfab, Syntactic... and.... well you´ll just have to stick around n see.

Hot Traxxx / We´re all in the same bed...
« on: December 05, 2004, 12:30:00 AM »
Recently I have been noticing some debates going around as to the general quality of the material that has been dropping and been hyped-up in and around the context of this forum.

One thing that stands out is that most of the time the feedback is overwhelmingly positive whit little negative criticism...but when certain individuals opt to speak their personal minds they tend to be brought down in flames - or a marauding firestorm rather.

okay...now here´s my opinion. And once again (well not exactly once again cuz up until now I´ve kept my mouth shut) I risk being brought down in flames too.....but err.....f***it:

I am a very critical person... when I say that I like something and think it´s dope... I MEAN it. I think the PTA shit is dope.... I think hype is dope... I thought one of ootz tracks was dope... i thought madscientistphil had some pretty dope elements.

Now: some ppl might get offended but I am saying what I am saying because I am hoping that people will be HONEST about their opinions and not just say that something is tight because they know the person who made it or even just because of the mere fact that it is local.... i didnt like most of the Hypocalypse mixtape.... I am not too impressed by the innovators (NB: i´ve only heard a few tracks)... and there´s alot of dickriding going on on this forum - (DISCLAIMER: THESE ARE ALL MY OPINIONS).

Here´s the deal: I want south african HipHop to be BIIIIIG on a world wide scale. I want peeps to work together... no matter what city we´re in or whatever and be inspired by each other.... and up the quality to the point where we can expose the immense talent, creativity and SOUL we have in this country and blow everyone else away.

We´ve gotta get to the point where we are honest with each other and not afraid to speak up when we DONT like something so that the GENERAL standard by which local hiphop is judged is RAISED. Otherwise stuff will...for the great part be SUBSTANDARD.

When I hear someone better than me... I get inspired to work harder... When someone disses my beats shit....constructively... I work harder...

i HATE it when ppl step up to me and are like ´DAMN MAN YOUR SHIT IS SOOOOO ILL´ when i know its not..... I HATE when I just played a wack set and 5 peeps step up to me and are like ´DAMN MAN... THAT SET WAS SOO ILL´ - I wanna slap them.

And this is a general trend I´ve been noticing all over SA n CPT. There is FAR TOO MUCH praising going on....and NO REAL CRITICISM WHATSOEVER...

If we wanna build a cosy collective of ´soso´ producers and lyricists who are all content cuz everyone seems to love their shit... lets keep on what we´ve been doing.

But if we wanna GET BETTER AT THIS SHIT.... FAST.... LETS UP THE f***ING PAR.n stop sucking on each others a**es.

So... PLEASE DISS MY SHIT AND TELL ME WHAT YOU DIDNT LIKE...
Cuz from now on...thats what i´m gonna be doing....

Instead of telling me (You/him/her) that my (your/his/her) shit is ill cuz it sounds better than Piet Retief´s beats from potchefstroom... TELL ME MY SHIT IS WACK CUZ its nowhere near as good as PRIMO´s...

Quick loop made in acid pro 4.0 in the last hour

Dont usually use acid cuz even though sampling is in the tradition of hiphop n shit, i still dont really feel like I gave the beat it´s ´soul´ when i use samples?
Know what i mean?

it pissed me off how these days most, if not all commercial tracks that have some musical worth are just covers of old songs.... but what REALLY pisses me off is the fact that those artists dont mention the fact that its a cover - GIVE PROPS WHERE PROPS IS DUE.

Kinda feel the same way about making beats... just cuz you happened to stumble across a nice sample doesnt make u a good producer...

How do other producers feel about sampling?
Am i the only one whoz got some issues with it?

At which point does sampling become too much? At which point are you as a beatmaker no longer the beat ´creator´ but just a selector or beat conductor?
Do u feel that distinction should be made?

Tryin to get sum opinions?
