LESLIE ‘LEE’ KASUMBA BIOGRAPHY
Leslie ‘Lee’ Kasumba is Ugandan by descent and South African by orientation. Her first taste of commercial radio, after training at the Voice of Wits, was a huge bite to say the least. She was given the mammoth task of co-hosting and producing the biggest show on Yfm at the time: The Beat with Bad Boy T.
The Beat (12-3pm) with Bad Boy T quickly became The Beat with Bad Boy T and sports whiz Sanza, a partnership that has lasted and has proven successful. After conquering that time slot, registering huge ratings this dynamic team was moved to the evening (Harambe 5-9pm), a move that posed another problem. This particular time of the day is dominated by television and takes a tremendous effort to lure listeners from the variety of entertainment on the box. Harambe (which means ‘Let’s pull together in Swahili) has done this with ease.
Popular music, fused with music from unknown talent, entertainment news, exclusive interviews and a whole lot of sports coverage, make up the Harambe line up. Hip-hop is the mainstay in the in the show’s music line-up, with a particular emphasis on South African hip-hop. In the Harambe team, Lee is the strong, opinionated, yet playful cog in the machine. Her views have ruffled a few feathers before and with growth, she will surely be one of the most celebrated broadcasters South Africa has seen.
A little secret that at the best of time Kasumba doesn’t want people to know yet is that she has an incredible singing voice. The Drama Honours graduate from the University Of the Witwatersrand, takes voice lessons and is studying to play the piano, all in preparation for what will be a wonderful music career.
