London - South African Afro-pop combo Freshlyground are one of the five nominees for Best African Act at the 2006 MTV Europe Music Awards (MTV EMAs).

MTV Networks Africa said the five nominees representing the African continent at the 13th annual MTV Europe Music Awards would be upbeat Nigerian R&B twins P-Square, Tanzanian bongo flava star Juma Nature, Angolan R&B sensation Anselmo Ralph, Kenyan hip hop artist Nameless, and Freshlyground.

Only one of the five artists will follow in the footsteps of Nigeria's 2-FACE Idibia, who won the inaugural Best African Act Award in 2005.

The winner of the Best African Act award will be announced on MTV base (DStv Channel 88) and MTV European (DStv Channel 85) on November 2 during the live broadcast of the awards ceremony, which airs from Copenhagen, Denmark.

Justin a dual nominee

Ever-evolving global superstar Justin Timberlake will host and also perform at the explosive, star-studded music event on the European calendar.

In 2006, Justin is a dual nominee with a nod in Best Pop and Best Male, and with his second solo #1 album FutureSex/LoveSound just released, he is the perfect choice to heat up the Copenhagen stage and keep the party rocking long into the night.

Other award nominees for the 2006 EMAs include the Red Hot Chili Peppers, leading the pack with four nominations, closely followed by Madonna, Shakira, Nelly Furtado, Christina Aguilera, Kanye West and Muse with three each.

The MTV EMAs 2006 will be seen by a potential audience of more than 1.4 billion people on MTV channels worldwide, through TV syndication and digital elements.
