Yo bout 2 b out early 2nyt. Was at Jigga's press confrence yesterday and I signed a copy of HYPE for him. He laughed.

Yo theres much to improve but I'm happy with the product. Its a step forward. I like the progress and Im glad some AG cats appreciate it too. It will take me 3 issues to get it where I really want it to be.

Need help!!!

Who do u think should be in the December/jan cover? And what do you think about the "Fine" feature with Flubba?

That seems to be making the most sense at this point (One of the Pro's). Oh the "Fine"? Ya we go out and peep the scene. We fine cats for hip hop misconduct and all that. So ya if somebody does something offensive they gotta be fined and that fine is published. Let me know if u find anybody half steppin in a big way.

It was worth my money, though the size issue doesn't sit well with me. I want to know about the articles, do people get commissioned to write em, or can any1 submit an article. I was thinking of doing a feature on Lesotho's very-much-infant hip-hop scene...hmmmmm

Finally got the copy yesterday.

Firstly the Proverb track on the CD is straight up bananas. Heard yesterday on Y that his is now signed to Gallo. Props for that.

Spotted Hakeem like 3 or 4 times in the mag. The brother is definitely on the grind. It's nice seeing dope cats finally get their shine nationwide.

The Nthabi article was so on point. The girl has got good things coming her way. She sounds very articulate and if i may say so quite intelligent. She seems to know what she wants and just how to get it. Good luck to her with her project.

A couple of things i think could be better:

1. Articles on international artists -
There is really nothing interesting about these articles. Most of them just break down the history of what these cats have done, etc, etc.

Mizi, can't we get exclusive interviews here ? I know it's probably not easy getting a hold of them, but with the internet and all, shit's not impossible.. Maybe have like a chat session on your website with the fans, and then print the  transcript in the mag.

2. The Columns

Are you gonna be adding new columns to the  mag. I see the current issue has taken over the same old columns/features which we in the previous issues. If you are, maybe you can consider having a producers column, where you interview different producers about the technical side of their work, you know , what equipment they use, how they mix they shyt, etc, etc. Kinda of on some Scratch Mag type shit.

Overall i enjoyed the issue.

And why isnt there a feature in this issue on my NON-EXISTANT hip hop career? The nerve of HYPE Mag to not include my extremely irrelevant information.

For real though, must admit, I have not yet gotten to any store of any form to buy any real magazine of any sort.I'm keen to have a look at the issue, with it being the first of many great ones.Congrats on the issue Mizi.I look forward to commenting, in due course.I'm sure its good.

Mr C, I like ur Columns suggestion i.e. technical info and all.Gives it a whole new dimension.Though, we gotta remember HYPE isnt really on a Scratch tip, though a small section on this could be really useful for ppl who wan get into this game and step their own quality up a notch.

Oh and yeah, Bexta info'd me that the Proverb track is on the HYPE CD.Apparently its the track produced by the one and only HIPE.How pun-straddling is that........HIPE in HYPE. Big ups.

Oh yes, one more thing,........that point that Sduhla made bout SA ppl making moves abroad is a valid one.Perhaps, some sort of network could be created to keep Mizi and the HYPE team abreast regarding what's happening outside of SA and the moves that ppl are making.Once confirmation has been made, the team can then do the necessary work that needs to be done to get articles or features knocked out.

Anyways, looking forward to checking this one and officially purchasing it. :)

Design: shoddy, slapdash and inconsistent.

Subbing: Worse, if possible, than in Fungayi's  day. I didn't know the Roots were fronted by a guy called Black Thaught. Or that the group was called Led Zepplin. How you hire a sub who doesn't know how to spell the names of artists is beyond me. I actually got physically angry reading the mag.

Writing: Improved drastically, but still incoherent and all over the place. Blindfold contributed the most pointless column I've ever read. And Ready D is, quite frankly, as good a writer as he is a bad DJ. Superb piece on K'Naan however. Once again, the best writer in the mag, Phiona Okomu, is based in London. When are we going to see some truly excellent writing?

That said, if anybody's going to wack this thing into shape it's Mizi and Simz. (actually emailed Mizi re these issues and he responded, and what's more, didn't think me a complete prat!)
