Racist Deporatations

A cousin of mine was denied entry into the UK in October along with 17 other black South Africans on his flight. His case displays many similarities with the one written about in this article:

I have subsequently invited him over to the Netherlands where I am studying at the moment thinking that he would have less trouble visiting his South African girlfriend in London if he had a multiple-entry Schengen visa.

This afternoon we bought him a ticket to London and sent him on his way only for him to contact us many hours later saying that he was yet again denied entry. The reason they gave him was that he did not have a visa - despite the fact that South Africans are not required to have visas to enter the UK.

I would appreciate any further information anyone could give me about this kind of practice. It is something that seems to be getting worse by the day. :-Y

this is really alarming -- especially given the visa waiver program, which would make these forced returns illegal in addition to racist.  is this happening anywhere else that you know of?  anyone else know about this?  i´m really sorry about your cousin´s troubles.  it seems like the recent escalations of US wars since Sept. 11, 2001 have given immigration officials wider room to act on racist tendencies that were already there -- in western europe, the us, and the G8 nations.  it´s like the power to arbitrarily impose policies based on racism has been expanded greatly.  thanks for sending the article.  i´m gonna try to learn more about this.
