so i´ve had maximum sentence for like two months now, and never really listened to it fully. Yesterday i popped it in, skipped to track 7,

The track is by Optical Illusion featuring guess who, CANIBUS. I couldn´t believe my ears. How did these cats hook up with BIS. The song is off the hook, and battlecat definitely laced the beat. This song is ill ! That whole compilation is ill !

a friend told me that Bis has a song called "Blow U In Half" and what these cats did was take Bis´ vocals put them over a Battlecat beat and have Golden Shavel spit a verse on there.

Isn´t that like, Illegal ?? I thought that´s where copyrighting comes in ?
It´s understandable to scratch someone´s words for a hook (Primo style), but to take his whole verse and put it on a "commercial"  CD without permission ? that´s askin for trouble. I guess BIS doesn´t have time for that though.

Yeah u right that´s illegal but I think the fact that this is a mixtape makes it a bit difficult to get sued. I once heard Proverb on Y explaining the sampling of Ron Isley’s on “Letter To My X” and he said that they (Rage) didn’t copyright the material on Maximum Sentence, in short Rage don’t own the rights on Maximum Sentence (I can’t remember if he said the whole CD or the tracks in question).

Any way does any one in AG know anything about copyrights and publishing, I think a lot of rappers (me included) are not informed  when it comes to that shit if anyone knows something please let us know

That´s very interesting to know, Khoi. So RAGE doesn´t own their own work huh ? That´s a pretty clever way of avoding sample clearances. But on the flipside, someone could go copyright all those songs in his/her name, and as the owner of the work, could claim profits made from that CD.

To all the producers out there (Milk, Nyambz), do u guys clear all your samples. If so, how much does it normally cost and what´s the procedure for doing this ?

So u email the publisher of the original recording ? Have they ever come back to you ? If so how much do they normally charge, say for a 5second sample.

Even if you haven´t cleared any samples yourself, maybe you´ve heard how much other local cats have paid for their samples ? I´m just looking for  a figure .Thanks

You´re right , it looks mad expensive to clear samples. The cheapest price i saw in that article was like 500 pounds. DAMMNNNN ! Thats a lot of dough.

I guess it´s cool, if your just a producer, cos then the artist has the responsibilty of clearing the sample, but with me being the producer and the pusher behind my compilation , i guess i will have to clear the samples on my own.

Or maybe i need to start disguising my samples, so that they sound nothing like the original. AGHHH f#ck it, i should just start f#ckin around with my keyboard and make my own original beats.
