who are these ma**es that you wanna reach? Its not like the music you do has a large market. The commercial rap in SA which is mostly succesful has vernicular or "street-loxion' dominated rhymes in it,and you guys dont have that .
Theres only a small " american wannabe" market, (which I would believe would be your main audience) in SA, and most of that market wont even buy local sht. They wud rather buy a Nelly album or Fifty.
there u go dude! u jus nailed it! finally!
see, the perception the media is perpetuating here in SA, is that people are actually buying the VErnac street loxion shit! do urself a favour! go to any Musica store! do what i did! ASK the MANAGER! which albums are selling!
he'll tell u exactly what he told me! our so called mainstream hiphop(vernac kasi shit!) is not selling! some of these labels are paying for the CDs to be kept on the shelves, musica is returning most of them to the label! FACT! zulu mob sold 700 copies! i then asked him! WHAT is SELLING!? he said, MOSTLY house music, gospel and afrikaans music locally, even kwaito sales are bad in the past few YEARS!
he told me 50 cent sold 22,000 copies that month, in that store and DJ Fresh was 2nd with 6,000 copies.
this market ur talkin bout, the loxion kultcha market, cmon! stop lyin to yaself! nobody buys that shit! look at the top artists in that market! tuks, hhp, prokid, murafe, jubjub, zulumob,my man, hidden force! the sales of these artists are terrible! none of these dudes can even go gold!
fact! proverb sold more than prokid the last time! im sure its the same this time too! open ur eyes! the english shit got a much bigger market than the so called commercial market u talkin bout! face it! this vernac shit aint workin! skwatta did it right a few albums back! but then its been on a steady decline and people wud rather buy US hiphop, cos the regular consumer dont think its a good enough product to go buy! we all know it! how many of these commercial albums do u own!?
