hiphop has come of age in south africa.

do we still have to use terms that were coined abroad???

i just looked at emile's article and saw that his organisation is called HEAL THE HOOD. i ask myself the question.. WHO USES THE WORD "HOOD" ON THE CAPE FLATS????

HOOD is obviously an american shortening of the word NEIGHBOURHOOD.  if we have what is called TOWNSHIPS in south africa.. i ask myself... why not "SAVE THE SHIP"...?????

A very good point!

But then, devil's advocate: much of what we say comes from a Western cultural backdrop. Hell, most of hip-hop comes from it.

But I think saying save the ship sounds nicely poetic!

in case u have no knowledge or recollection of Cape Flats culture...

nicknames like Faaibop, Slams, Lippe, Ougat, Boenchie, Oupa etc has been around long before there was even rap music... never mind an artist called 50 Cent...

Recognise.

Because I was only called Boffie in high school, in reference to my surname (Boffard). I haven't been called that in years.

Rob One is what Siya (from orangutang bitch) called me when we were in res together back in first year varsity. I just liked the name and started using it.

Hmmnnn good points. Food for thought.

Words from Western frames of reference are littered throughout hip hop.
Isn't "Hip Hop" itself a western coined term?
Why not develop something local but similar in cultural aestetics (dancing/ innercity lower income high-density housing) & call it something original say------->>>>"KWAITO"

SensAi = (mis-spelt) Japanese ie Eastern Reference... Some have accused me of preaching I mean teaching so I guess a Sensei I am. That + years of Karate  8)

mUnetsi dubbed me TATEguru - A Shona word meaning ancestor..
