[THE South African Democratic Teachers’ Union (Sadtu) has failed to come out in support of its embattled leader, Willie Madisha, who is involved in the saga of the “missing” R500000 allegedly donated to the South African Communist Party (SACP).

Madisha, who recently announced that he would not stand for re-election as Sadtu leader in 2010 nor as the president of the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu), is facing increasing isolation.

There is speculation that, following a fallout with his labour movement and SACP comrades, his political career may end before 2010.

The union issued a statement yesterday to deny media reports that it had decided to back Madisha, saying it would not take sides in the dispute between its president and SACP boss Blade Nzimande over the money.

“There is no way we are backing Willie against Blade. We do not know who took the money,” said Sadtu general secretary Thulas Nxesi.

Sadtu’s secretariat said yesterday, following a meeting of the union’s national executive committee, it had been resolved that sides would not be taken.

“This matter must not be allowed to divide the SACP, Cosatu or Sadtu,” it said.

The union believed it was a matter for the SACP and that an internal probe by the party was necessary into Madisha’s allegations that he gave Nzimande R500000 donated by businessman Charles Modise. The money has since disappeared.

The SACP probe is expected to be completed next week. While a complaint has been laid with police, nobody has been charged.

Madisha has made two affidavits to the police. In them, he says his driver helped him carry two black bags containing R500000, which he handed over to Nzimande at the Sunnyside Park Hotel in Johannesburg in 2002.

However, he cannot remember the day this took place.

Nxesi said the matter of Madisha not standing for re-election had not been discussed at the meeting. He said the union would hold a national general council next month where the alleged donation and Madisha’s future would be discussed.

I have a serious problem with this isht. How the hell do you give R500 000 to an individual if it belongs to a the party? Wouldn't you rather write a cheque to the party and have the cash deposited into the parties bank account or transfer the funds to the partiy's bank account. By merely carrying around R500 000 in a bag it already sounds illegal. Can't believe this type of niggas wanna run our country. I can see Mr Madishe carrying around R5 million in bags to go pay the world bank - settle our debt. Straight up corruption.
