20/20 EPISODE 105 (07/03/10)

Apologies for Mypodcast.com doing a technical fail and not letting us upload last week. Let's talk about something more positive. Let's talk about M-Phazes.

He embodies everything that is good about Australian hip-hop. Technically perfect, hugely imaginative and deeply dope, Mark Landon is a producer that you absolutely need to have in your life. Repping Melbourne's Obese Records, he has a new LP out. It's called Good Gracious, and having listened to it we can confirm that there is no title that could fit it better. There are two joints from the album on this episode, along with some other dope tunes.

Also of note is San The Instumonumentalist. If you can swallow the mouthful that is his name, you'll find a producer who is a bit more reserved but no less fresh than M-Phazes. His new beat tape, Pretty Black, has been clocking ma**ive download numbers, so he's onto something. That's the equivalent of internet gold. Listen to the show, then go get that: LINK REMOVED/?wfnm4mmtztz

- For What It's Worth - M-Phazes featuring Solo
- Walk On Clouds - M-Phazes featuring Bliss n Eso
- Heavy Metal Kings - Jedi Mind Tricks featuring Ill Bill
- Think Twice Music (Battlekat Remix) - Last Days Fam
- These Women - San The Instumonumentalist

20/20 EPISODE 106 (14/03/10)

The name Illy might not be familiar, but let it never be said that 20/20 doesn't consistently dig up the freshest new emcees you just have to hear. Building on our exploration of M-Phazes last week, we now check out his boy Illy's debut, Long Story Short. It's on Obese Records out of Melbourne, and we have two tracks from it, produced by M-Phazes himself and Wattup Squared. To say you need to hear them is an understatement, but let's put it this way: your life will be dimmer and less rich for not having bumped them.

Oh, and we got some Brother Ali, some Chima Anya, some K'Naan. Looks like a banger.

 - The Preacher - Brother Ali
- Rock Star Shit - Illy
- My Way - Illy
- The Realness - Chima Anya featuring DJ Slipdisc
- Take A Minute - K'Naan

20/20 LABEL SHOWCASE: YNR PRODUCTIONS

YNR (or Young N Restless to its mum) is one of the most acclaimed hip-hop labels in the UK. With Jehst at its head, the outfit has managed to build a back catalogue of astounding dopeness, and has become a crucial part of UK hip-hop history.

As YNR pa**es the ten year mark, we give Jehst and his boy Micall Parknsun a call. They were on the way down to Plymouth for a show when we caught up with them, and both shed some light on the history of the label, where it is now and where it's going. All of this laced with a mix of some of the label's finest moments on record. If you have even the faintest interest in hip-hop, then you need to hear this.

20/20 EPISODE 107 (19/04/10)

True Sight Music is a stupidly exciting outfit in the Eastern Cape of South Africa, with artists like J-Bux, Supremacy and Hishaam on their roster. One of their flagship releases is Epic's project. He's a member of Supremacy, and has got a funky record coming called Epic's Cinematography. It'll no doubt be bursting at the seams with fresh raps and solid production, because hey, them True Sight boys got a rep. We have the lead single, Let Me Know, to close off this episode.

Elsewhere, big tings a'gwan...

- Shutterbug - Big Boi
- Gunshowers - Wu-Ma**acre (Meth-Ghost-Rae) featuring Sun God and Inspectah Deck
- To Be An African - Zone Fam and Teckzilla
- Requiem Of The Gods - Skitz featuring Orifice Vulgatron, Mr Ti2bs, Dynamite MC and Harry Shotta
- Let Me Know - Epic

rob, i hope you dont mind. this does seem to be the place for this. it may need its own space i dont know. may come later. but that may be duplicating processes...which just makes it one more then...

for poetry.

a heads up really on the launch this coming friday 23 april of a new intervention in the poetic landscape known as badilisha! poetry radio. initially to be accessed on www.badilishapoetry.com but later on more widespread platforms.

The Badilisha! Poetry X-Change is an ongoing project that celebrates the word through the concept of ‘badilisha’, a Kiswahili expression denoting change, exchange and transformation.

For a range of historical, political and economic reasons, most of the important collections and productions of African art today are located or performed outside of Africa. As a result, Africans living on the continent have limited access to their own artistic heritage and the work of contemporary practitioners.

Based in South Africa, the Africa Centre was conceived as both a physical entity and an ongoing philosophical journey that aims to redress these imbalances.
The poetic voices from Africa and its Diaspora are no exception to this reality. New voices in Pan-African poetry as literary and performance mediums have historically gained their global exposure and documentation through foreign publications and academic research. These narrow channels have extremely limited the plethora of African writers, poets, and academics from being read and heard throughout the world.
This lack of publication and recording has meant that most young African poets and writers are exposed to and primarily influenced by the work of literary icons from the Global North through what they have been taught in school, read about, seen and heard. Their knowledge of African authors and poets is limited, preventing the inspiration and influence vital to their growth, development, self-confidence and sense of place.
The issues are not confined however to simply the lack of access and outlets. Equally important are what Pan-African’s have to say.

This online poetry radio station will produce weekly podcasts of poets from Pan-African countries around the world and seeks to encourage and present; the exposure and growth of unheard voices; opportunities for established and aspirant poets to engage with each other and their work for mutual benefit through networking and skills transfer; diverse genres of poetic expression including performance and multi-media; and spaces for discussion and debate, on matters relevant to the experiences and concerns of these writers as a means to explore and mature the poetic form.

It also answers the need for an Africa-centred platform, where these voices and works can be accessed and enjoyed. The contribution poets and writers have made to social change throughout history is immeasurable and this poetic medium provides an extraordinary tool to define, expose and fundamentally shape our perceptions of the worlds we occupy.

Bringing these Pan-African voices together, beyond their localities can make a vital contribution to social change both in Africa and beyond. Regular themed conversations via a blog will facilitate continued discussion and debate amongst poets, poetry lovers and curious site visitors, engaging with the role of poets in the world, within and beyond their activities in the arts arena.

20/20 EXCLUSIVE!

We're proud to present one of the first plays of the new Bliss n Eso single, Down By The River. It's from their upcoming fourth record Running On Air. We know we've always been BnE stans a little bit, but these guys make such bloody fantastic music. Down By The River is nuts, and the guys were good enough to send it to us for an exclusive play right here. This is one episode of 20/20 you have to hear.

Oh, and there's some Tanya Morgan, and two new acts: the Bodega Brovas and J Nolan. We bring the heat - and you aren't going to find these tunes anywhere else.

- Down By The River - Bliss n Eso
- On Tour - Bliss n Eso
- Bang And Boogie - Tanya Morgan
- The Culture - Bodega Brovas
- History - J Nolan

Forgot to up this...

20/20 EPISODE 109 (30/05/10)

Nas and Damien Marley's new project Distant Relatives sounds dope - except for one thing. Nas' second verse on the track Leaders was one he'd already sold previously, to South Africa's HHP, for roughly $10,000 (according to the latter). HHP's song, Keledimu, is on this podcast, as is Leaders, so compare and contrast. Frankly, we think that it's a bit rich for Nas to start talking about Africa (as he does extensively on Distant Relatives) when he's shanking one of the people who live there.

It's a great episode music-wise though, especially with super-ill Canadian MC Shad. Take a look:

- Tribes At War - Nas and Damien Marley featuring K'Naan
- Listen - Shad
- Keep Shining - Shad
- Keledimu - HHP featuring Nas
- Leaders - Nas and Damien Marley featuring Stephen Marley

20/20 SPECIAL EDITION: HEADCOUNT RECORDS LABEL SHOWCASE

20/20 is a live show on Recharged Radio as well as being a podcast (it's now on Tuesday nights, suckers!) and you can listen in on www.rechargedradio.com at 7pm GMT.

We had a label showcase a couple of weeks back. Headcount Records is one of the most exciting rap outfits in the UK; home to Pneumatic and Sloth, MCM, Illustrate, C-Lone and a whole host of other fresh acts, they're also one of the few labels to insist on rocking on vinyl.
We pulled Pneumatic and Sloth (Chris Leigh and Sam Webster respectively) into the studio for a chat about how they run 'ting, the challenges of managing a label, their own music and why Sloth is becoming a pop producer. It's a great special edition, with plenty of fresh UK hip-hop.

- The Morning Star - Pneumatic and Sloth
- Be Careful - C-Lone
- Do What You Like - Illustrate
- As We... - Pneumatic and Sloth

Rob, can I expect any Verbal T and the Last Skeptic in rotation on these podcasts as the ''plenty of fresh UK hip-hop'' you speak of?

Er, yes.  :) We've played them before, and as a matter of fact I'm dropping one of their joints in the live show tomorrow night.

www.rechargedradio.com, 7PM GMT.

This was a special edition, so all the tracks came from one label.

20/20 EPISODE 111 (30/06/10)

Couple of quick admin bits:

Firstly, as you may have guessed, the podcast will now be available on Wednesday mornings. Ain't nothing else changed, just the day!

Secondly, we're now live midweek too. If you didn't know, 20/20 is also a live radio show broadcast on Recharged Radio on Tuesday nights, 7PM GMT. You can listen on www.rechargedradio.com. It's like three 20/20 shows crammed into one delicious hour!

Now, onto the dope-as-hell podcast...and it's Eminem, Slaughterhouse and Just Blaze. I frankly can't think of a more potent combination than this. And their track, Session One, is nuts. You just have to hear it.

And you may have heard of this kid K'Naan. He has a song called Waving Flag that is kind of popular at the moment. But you have the original album version? You can now!

- Session One - Eminem featuring Slaughterhouse
- Heartbeat (Remix) - Nneka featuring Nas
- Incredible - Mickey Factz
- Still Standing - Hilltop Hoods
- Waving Flag (Album Version) - K'Naan

20/20 EPISODE 112 (07/07/10)

In honour of the Netherlands (they beat Uruguay, and we had to pick someone) we're dropping two joints from this kid Brainpower. We say kid: the Dutch MC has a ten-year-plus career of supersonic material. We're bumping his Best Of joint at the moment, and it rocks. He's a natural, as you'll hear with two monster tracks on this episode.

That, plus our go-to producer slash superhero San The Instrumonumentalist has a new joint, which he produced for this guy Katlaw. Get familiar: we are now.

- Bang Time - M.O.P. featuring Styles P
- Let's Rock - Katlaw
- Mijn Manier - Brainpower
- Boks Ouwe - Brainpower
- God Complex (M-Phazes Remix) - Sonnyjim featuring Jehst and Cappo
