if you an upcoming artist and you paying for beats from your own pocket then you don't know how the music industry works
Iv heard your beats. If you are still making beats then you dont know anything about music. Generally speaking. In fact. You must be deaf. If this is true, it is a good enough justification to the music you put out.
Beating bitches since 1982.

@IQ - cosign. Multiple sources of income are incredibly important. Sadly, a 9-5 can often be critical to financial independence in the music biz.

Regardin Themba MaChaka, does anybody know who he's done beats for?

your record label should pay for beats as its an expense and they can deduct that off their tax returns , thats why its a lose situation to pay for beats for yourself, you cant put that on your IRP5 lol.

So what does that mean for the thousands and thousands of unsigned acts? Should they set up labels? And how large would the tax returns be?

Set yo business up first!
Matter fact, my advise for all aspiring rappers is GENERATE A STREAM OF INCOME FIRST.then start writing rhymes.

if you don't consider your music a business then it doesn't matter what you do

I fully agree. People tend to be too impatient, and rush into things without the neccesary building blocks.

Some people on the other hand dont care so much about the business side of it. I'm friends with some producers and artists from Umlazi, who have no busineses but have made so much doe off their music alone. They perform all over the world, under the South African radar, seriously coining it.

A few weeks back some boys were claiming Kanye and Timbo make half a mill off one beat...how true is dat?I find it hard to believe.....If an artists decides to use both these dudes beats on his album, what about the record label?since most of the revenue made from shows and ringtones goes to his pocket.

Now my question is...is there a label willing to operate @ a loss considering Promo, distribution and pressing costs?...shed light
Ha o mpona oska.....nkatumela!!!!
