I'm off to get a new set of monitors for my studio this afternoon.

Do I get active or pa**ive?

Currently I'm running a pair of (pa**ive) crappy hifi monitors through an old-a** Aurex amp. Now I've heard good things about well-made pa**ive monitors, but what do most producers on this site use? Can an active monitor be trusted with its inbuilt amp?

Maybe. An active speaker powers itself through its own amp. A pa**ive speaker requires an external amp and a power source through it.

The switches might be an EQ or a balancing module on the speaker.

Anybody else? Need help here!

Id suggest you go with the powered setup. Dont know shit about production. But i think it would be more convenient to have self amplified speakers especially if you might want to move studio a few times.

Rob- Powered, active. Seriously. Just got some half decent KRKs off the back of using pa**ives (properly exshpanshive ones) with a nice enough Denon amp. The difference, even just through an Edirol is ufckin unbelievable. Get a way flatter sound and instant responses. It also depends on how good you want your sound to be. Some cats never get to the point where it matters, some even still producing "competent" beats on headphones... I know this is not your route though.

People will argue that pa**ives can be just as good, which I feel but really really would personally say go active. I am sadly not a "producer" per se so I hope this doesn't nullify my comment breh. They're also just better on the "cool" factor which makes everything feel a bit more Delorean. Sorry but this too is a factor.

ONE PROBLEM:  Actives sometimes give you maddening, mysterious and unsolvable hisses and/ or buzzes. I'm not talking power source interference and stuff which is easy to fix, I mean mysterious to the max. This can be immensely infuriating and has led to me putting something on hold for what is now ten days and counting... Anyway.

Thanks son!

Re your mysterious noise: you're not the first person who's said this to me about Actives. You may have already but suggest investing in a new set of leads/jacks or checking the connections in your internal amplifiers (is that even possible without an electronics degree? Who knows...)

Anyway, I'll remember the advice. I guess the amp matching is better.

word! About the buzz, most of the time thats a shielding problem, or occasionally an earthing problem. Ive fought with that a couple of times.
Pa**ive or Active? Depends on your budget. A good Pa**ive set of monitors coupled with a matchingly great amplifier will cost a lot more than equally sounding actives. Actives are also easier to transport and you need not worry about what amplifier to use, u just give them a good signal and you game.
And eish, i would stay away from Alesis, rather go for KRK. But in the end its your ears, with your room, with your speakers that determine final result.
Shallom!

Cut n pasted from a producer forum,,,

"Active monitors have a power amp built right into them. Usually, these are mounted on the back. "Regular speakers" which are also called pa**ive monitors, require an amplifier to drive them. The idea behind active monitors is to match them to an amp which is ideal to drive them. This takes some of the guesswork out of buying a monitoring system. Also, since active monitors are connected directly to your mixing board or audio interface, they eliminate speaker wires and hence another source of potential trouble."

I run Event 20/20 pa**ive monitors with a R300 Reference amp - never had a problem.

You might also consider a really good pair of headphones instead.
