sup cats,

i aint no sound engineer but im trying to work on mastering some really kak vocals in order to step my game up. These vocals have all kinds of pops and unclear words as well as a heavy sweeping background noise.

now i have used the noise reduction plug-in and its ok but my vocals dont sound crisp..the de-esser doesnt seem to be doin much or seems to to make the s's harder...im not really sure how to compress vocals...

what steps do u cats take on mastering really crap vocals...can anyone help me please?

ps. i use acid pro - but im told it would be ideal to edit the vocals in sound forge then mix them down in acid

Don't. To master, you need a clean recording. GO back and rerecord them with a popshield, in a good acoustic environment, with a half-decent mic.

Once recorded, use a decent amount of compression, some reverb, cut the extreme top and bottom end on the EQ and you're away.

I do agree wit rob_one.....ur mastering/mixing is as good as the quality of wat ur mixing or mastering.....thats why its best to opt 4 beater quality and good mixing from the start to get good results.
