Bullet-proof vests in SA!
Posted: 2009-10-21 15:39

The security team taking care of the German national team during the World Cup next year has warned the players to wear bullet-proof vests when they leave the hotel.

BaySecur says South Africa’s high crime-rate necessitates the extra security, which will also involve armed security personnel.

“The possibility for the players of moving outside of the hotel boundaries should be kept to a minimum,” BaySecur’s Guenter Schnelle tells German magazine Sport-Bild. “Otherwise there must be a full escort: armed security guards and bullet-proof vests for the players.”

German Football Federation (DFB) security boss Helmut Spahn says they won’t be taking any risks during the tournament.

“We will probably use more personnel than we would normally have,” he says. “We need to first of all get an idea of what security arrangements are already in place for both the team and the media. Then we will decide then whether to improve the security measures or whether they are sufficient.”

The problem is the news that they see on tele.
I saw an insert on German TV showing hectic CCTV footage and all that is wrong with our country. And at this point in time, it's a lot of crime, corruption and getting away with murder. Newspapers are telling people to change their travel plans and forget about the world cup.
This is all they see.
Apparently 50 people are murdered everyday across SA, I didn't know that, call me naive.
I would be shyt scared to come here if I wasn't living here and thats' all I saw.

I wish those bastards meet some brazillian Shemales in the middle of S.A. and then they get raped by them after getting robbed, so that they loose the f***ing cup in the process.

Now before we go and get all xenophobic, let's just look at the stats:

Murders in Germany: 0.0116461 per 1,000 people (ranked #49)
Murders in SA: 0.496008 per 1,000 people (ranked #2)

Murders with Firearms in Germany: 0.00465844 per 1,000 people (ranked #21)
Murders with Firearms in SA: 0.719782 per 1,000 people (ranked #1)

Rape in Germany: 0.0909731 per 1,000 people (ranked #24)
Rape in SA: 1.19538 per 1,000 people (ranked #1)

a**aults in Germany: 1.4183 per 1,000 people (ranked #26)
a**aults in SA: 12.0752 per 1,000 people (ranked #1)

(Source: NationMaster.com)

Now we all know that stats can be inaccurate and that they don't tell the whole story, but you can understand why someone who has never been to SA is going to be paranoid.

What are you guys pissed off about really?

Would you go on holiday to a country knowing that they have 40 murders a day? Hijackings have increased by approximately 400% in the past year, and the former chief of police is facing charges of corruption and accepting bribes from drug dealers who have also admitted to murder?

These guys only know what they see on TV and in the stats. You can't blame them.

Usually their attitudes change when they actually see the country and realise that its not like that all over. this will happen here too.

point made, but under what circumstances are those murders commited?  do people go out on a random murder fest? or what?

IPL was successfully hosted in SA cos of security concerns in India and England. No Incidents.

Irish and British Lions came over here with no worries.

We've hosted a successful Cricket World Cup, Rugby World Cup, AFCON, CONFED CUP,etc.

Can't believe you guys are sticking up for the Germans. We got tourists coming in on a daily, without bodyguard and shit
and they leave here without incidents. Yeah, yeah, some of them get caught in the wave, but that shit happens in every country.

The German team are already gonna come with a huge security contingent and they still wanna rock BV's ? That's some Bullshit man. This is huge tournament and im sure security will be tight all around. They might as well land in Cape Town with Armored Ships and moved thru the country in Tanks and shit, just to avoid all the stray bullets flying around.

Come on people.

Yes they are being paranoid. Funny how German corporations like Benz have production planst right here and have their execs come here on the regular. And all of a sudden their soccer team must have vests and be guarded.

yes crime is high, but to instruct players to keep any stepping outside hotel as low as possible is a joke. f***ing joke.

Everyone knows crime is high here. It's an abnormal society with a history of violence. You would expect them to know that it is hardly a big issue at international events like World Cups and International Politics Summits.

Ridiculous I tell yo.

Now, D i dont get your logic. I can imagine someone comparing crime rates in Khayelithsa and paarl

Like

Murders in Cape Suburb  - 1 per 100 days
Murders in Khalthsa - 1 per hour.

and then decinding not to go to khayelithsa orto wear bullet proof vest when going there. paranoid.

Naturelle - yes they show that on TV. but you would expect them to be deciding on security issues on more than TV reports. Easy as that. real ground info. Why wont they call their emba**y, Mercedes benz people, etc.they would know that it is dumb to say players must wear bullet proof vests and not step outside their hotels.

f*** Germany man.

why isn't anyone asking where these people are dying?

aside from the World Cup (which i couldn't give a shit about) i think this is important.

(i don't really care about the Germans' fear. i'm more afraid of them than anything else. i mean, i'm afraid for the people who will be made to cater to them.)

@ D and Pyro are you really shocked that people would be offended by this, or where you just using that to springboard your arguments?

People from other parts of the world don't take the time to analyse the circumstances of the individual murders or rapes, they just look at the broad picture and make a decision about whether or not they would feel safe in that environment.

Obviously football teams don't have any choice - the WC is here so they have to come. Naturally they are going to see the stats and the tv reports and want to take precautions. Now to us, these precautions may seem excessive or silly, but that's because we know the environment. There are many parts of the world (such as Afghanistan) where I wouldn't feel safe because I don't know the local conditions (even if a local told me, 'don't worry, it's cool').

The fact that they are coming at all means that they understand that SA has hosted a lot of successful international sporting events without incident. This doesn't change the fear that the stats induce in people who are not familiar with the local environment.

Granted, we all understand their concerns around security. But for them to go around wearing Vests is ridiculous. Like what, people just go around shooting each other in the streets over here ? ppppsshhhh.
