People from other parts of the world don't take the time to analyse the circumstances of the individual murders or rapes, they just look at the broad picture and make a decision about whether or not they would feel safe in that environment.

if you are that concerned about your safety, you would make time.

why isn't anyone asking where these people are dying?

aside from the World Cup (which i couldn't give a shit about) i think this is important.

(i don't really care about the Germans' fear. i'm more afraid of them than anything else. i mean, i'm afraid for the people who will be made to cater to them.)

@ D and Pyro are you really shocked that people would be offended by this, or where you just using that to springboard your arguments?

I'm not trying to argue that the Germans are right to wear bullet proof vests or want to stay in their hotels. If I subscribed to that point of view, I wouldn't be living in SA, let alone running a record label where I end up spending a lot of time in various hoods. I am just saying that you have to understand people's fear of coming to, statistically, one of the most violent countries in the world. It's going to make them act a bit irrationally. Instead of understanding their fear, our reaction is to say, 'f*** these cats, I hope they die'.

I don't know where to find a list of murders by suburb. I'm sure most tourists don't know either.

Granted, we all understand their concerns around security. But for them to go around wearing Vests is ridiculous. Like what, people just go around shooting each other in the streets over here ? ppppsshhhh.

where do we people go around shooting each other?

wow, are u for real ? ummm, how about mostly in their homes, their front gates, etc ? planned criminal activities instead of just senseless rampant lawlessness like say in Belize ?

please give us examples of where people are getting shot in the streets on a daily, in full view of everyone ? Im sure Brent Kebble doesn't count.

okay.

i was just asking if an angry gut-reaction (considering - amongst other things, of course - our history as a continent with Europe) is something that you can't come to expect and understand from people. seems to me like you might be asking a lot when you ask people who toil to make ends meet in a 'Third World' country ravaged by 'First World' countires to empathize with the fears of 'First Worlders' when they take brief, chauffeured, hotel-accomodated excursions into Africa.

of course it's natural that one should defend/protect themselves. that is very sensible. but you cannot ignore the 'sensitivity' of the situation if you hope to communicate effectively with people. we cannot expect an internet list to summate the situation or rather direct how people should feel/re-act (personally, i think it's also quite sensible to be offended/angered by this).

but i'm not sure if you were aiming to communicate or push your own point? if not, you can ignore what i've said.

I don't know where to find a list of murders by suburb. I'm sure most tourists don't know either.

as i said i don't care about the tourists. i was asking why South Africans don't investigate this.

So you think it's sensible to be offended or angered by Germans feeling scared? So what shall we do, round up all the Germans who arrive in SA and shoot them?

yes, within context it is sensible to be offended by the Germans being scared.

no, i don't think we should be violent. i think we should investigate why we re-act that way.

personally its pointless getting hot under the collar over people's ignorance, the world is such that people act on perceptions,  case in point many many years ago b4 i came to SA , the perception was that south africa was war torn and basically the idea was "why are u moving to a country that is war" suffice to say there was no war, but the news we got on SA was always about riots and such.

the same with these germans all they hear about in their media is people getting killed, corruption trials, president pomping HIV + woman, the one president getting kicked out, no one gives a full detailed story

its pointless to get angry because im pretty sure everyone here has a perception about some or other african country based on media reports which in most cases has nothing to do with the country at all.

so its a waste of energy. the bullet proof vest is bullshit, if its true.

I guess it would annoy people if I pointed out how many South Africans tell me not to go to certain hoods because of stories they have heard about those hood, despite never having been there themselves...

My theory on "locations" aka hoods; go there with someone who is from there, they will show you what kind of culture the place has.  Which parts are "straight up gangsta" and which parts you can hang out at!  If you dont do this, u can be easily spotted as the alien, coz ur walking will probably expose you! just me.

and ya phuck those Germans.... SA prostitutes must deny them! nxa

No it wouldn't (after all this warning is worldwide).
What annoys people is that as someone who lives in South Africa, you should know better.
No one has the business to say people coming to South Africa should be wearing vest whether misguided or not.

I (we) are outraged because, not only is it false, but we are the people of this country who wake up to make an honest living, pay taxes, and totally abhor crime and as someone living here 24/7 you should be outraged too, if not definitely not on their side.

It's an insult for someone who is basically is going to be spending just one month as a guest in our country to ridicule and silly our daily lives.

Ironically I was driving around in Soweto with a white German guy last night when we heard Robert Marawa say this on the radio.
We went to a buy and braai and the Chiefs match. He even disappeared for five minutes.

When did I say that anyone should wear a bullet-proof vest in SA (apart from the police of course)?

I think it's stupid that the German football federation are advising their players to wear vests and stay in their hotels, but I understand why they are doing it - they hear '50 murders a day' and they get shook. It's their job to make sure that their players are safe - not to make sure that they get a balanced and fair view of South Africa. They are doing their job over-zealously but I don't think that makes them evil.

I'm sure Obama goes everywhere with ma**ively over-zealous security too. Does that make him stupid and insensitive?

I was with a South African friend of mine on his first trip to London. He was blown away when he saw white people sleeping on the streets and begging for money in London. He thought everyone in the UK was rich. The point is, he didn't know any better until he went there and saw it himself.

Then you understand that their job is safe-guard their players not make lazy and insane sweeping statement.

They should ask the German consulate in the country for tips or the countless fat German chicks that visit Cape Town every year to get black dick...

Anyway Obama is the first black president of an openly hated country.

And there really isn't much I can say about someone who believes that white people can't be homeless.
Did he put a gla** to the bathroom door every time you went in to find if you guys shit too?

Playin'

There is a very good piece written by a British writer for The Guardian about traveling to the world cup. I'mma try and find that and post it.
