I've seen that Ees documentary and its funny how they think that he's the first white
person to do Kwaito when Lekgoa has been around since the late 90s. When they
thought Eminem was the first white rapper, I was thinking "haven't these people
ever heard of Falco (or at least the Beastie Boys)?
Bots Kwaito had this dude named Vee and his music was like a mix between Kwaito
and Soukous (Congolese music). I also remember going on this website were some
people were claiming that Kwaito began in Botswana because Oskido used to DJ
there during the early 90s during his Mid Tempo House days. It made me laugh
but then sort of understand from their point of view because it seems as if the club
scene was much more laid back in those countries than it was in apartheid South Africa.
Speaking of Mid-Temp House, I've just finished a Mid-Tempo House mix of some of
my favorite UK Garage songs. What influenced me were the Mid Tempo mixes that
Oskido, DJ Christos, DJ Ganyani, Vinny DaVinci, Glenn Lewis, Static Plastic, Arthur,
Gabi LaRoux, Tim White, and LA Beat (M'du & Joe Nina) used to do. I've heard
Static Plastic's "Slow Jams", some of Oskido's Mixmaster songs, and Groove City
(Arthur, LaRoux, White) featuring Chiskop and those tapes also had a part in
Kwaito's beginning as well as being the birth of SA House music. I'll upload my
Mid-Tempo mix soon!!
