What up...
First off when you talk about the scene "here" its has to begin with KALAMASHAKA which are the biggest cats doing it(only in terms of music not that balling BS)..though they had taken a hiatus but last year they dropped A gem...Kilio cha haki(a cry of justice) which in itself is compilation of some sorts..some 37 mcee's from the same ghetto, acouple of Dutch producers, an american femcee rha godess, and dutch singer. and wait for this a MAKESHIFT STUDIO what they put out was truly amazing i will put some tracks up. What is truly amazing about this group is they are about what they spit...they used the proceeds form that record to get studio equipment and bulid a studio. also they give back to the community they have done enough projects for the community where they live at....They speak about social ills, revolution of sorts, aids, Concsious MC type cats, for this release more infor can be found here ....www.kiliochahaki.com...
In terms of HIP HOP....we have cats doing it, but mostly the media ain't trying to bump that we have numerous acts but like i said getting burn in the media is really hard....hip hopwise we lag behind in Tanzania in the region. but cats are still doing it groups like Nannoma,K-south,Mashifta,warogi wawili, Mahatma, Ukoo flani and many more..these cats u listen to and appreciate what they are doing lyrically..but no radio play for this cats....i bet you all the top ten singles getting air play on kenyan radio are full of bullshit...partying,girls,braggin about stuff they ain't got it
In terms of music sh1t is mad dissappointing MOST of the cats prefer a bastardisation of "rap" some fusion of a cat ,trying to rap, half trying to sing, and some beats that sound same from artist to artist ...its like cats mastered the art of using lil jon on every song before lil jon did it by that i mean the way lil john uses the same drum pattern on almost all his songs that was what is happening....we have cats who bought into that IMAGE is everything mode.....this is what is prevalent...granted i sound a bit harsh...Kenyans have this view that prestige is everything which is a SAD...thats the POP scene..i mean you can have a cat one time rhyming the next he is doing dancehall track so its like very few cats have an identity . even on Kenyan message boards u will be suprised
Also this could be cause....Its pretty hard to vibe to most of kenyan about hip hop the knowledge is pretty limited they know about a fiddy,a nas, jay-z, eminem,pac,snoop...ask a someone about WU and apart from meth and odb nothing else is known...I mean i can't sit and front like i know everything and used to know everything...but i used to look for music i rememeber cats making fun of me cause i was listening to 'Ironman'..or cats looking at u funny cause u bumping to 'hell on earth'..ask a cat about 'I used to love her'..in as much as back here we did not get music releases immediately most of the cats never really cared hip hop which in turn could have served as foundation but it did not.
Most of that sounded like rant or eltist but its not...... real gets overlooked bullshit gets glorified
