The April/May Issue of HYPE hits the shelves on the 11th of April 2005, together with the second mixtape Smirnoff Spin HYPE Sessions Volume 2 featuring some of South Africa’s illest MCs of all time. The line up includes Outrageous Record’s new release Proverb, Hip Hop Pantsula’s Re-mix featuring Skwatta Kamp’s Slik as wel as Selwyn. Pretoria is well represented with Ba4za and Joint Custody.

‘The Smirnoff Spin HYPE Sessions project was born out of the need to marry hip hop readers and music headz. Although the project is only on its second instalment the support and response has been mad crazy,’ says HYPE magazine editor Fungayi Kanyuchi.

The first volume featured top names from yester-year into the present. These included the godfathers of South African hip hop Prophets of Da City, Zubz, Skwatta Kamp, Nel, Optical Illusion Young Nations and many more.

April the 7th will see the mother of all launch parties when HYPE magazine and Smirnoff Spin throw the official Smirnoff Spin HYPE Sessions launch party at the Drill House in central Joburg. Billed to perform are Cashless Society, Skwatta Kamp, Proverb, Zubz and Nel.

A crowd of more than 250 invited guests is expected and guest will receive the pre-release copies of HYPE Magazine as well as the compilation CD amongst other goodies.

The CD project will go on until end of the year where upon six hip hop compilations will have been released. In December HYPE magazine and Smirnoff Spin will throw a bedroom MC battle, which will see budding MCs perform before a respected panel of hip hop judges. The winner will be featured on the last CD of the year.

Meanwhile volume two as well as the upcoming volumes will feature two instrumental beats from commissioned producers. Interested MCs can free style or write songs over those beats and enter them for this year-end competition.

Entries on CD or tape can be sent through to HYPE Magazine 7 St Davids Place, Parktown, Johanesburg, 2193.
